agaugust: south Africa is wasting its time and money to modify and upgrade a half d.ead Rooivalk helicopter gunship project. You cannot compete in international market against Russia and America. South Africans always over- rate themselves, that's why they always get disappointments and final defeat.

Try learn to walk before you run. Nigeria is very careful about jumping too fast in weapons marketing, try learn from us and build cheaper and easy to maintain weapons that can compete with China because the Chinese are selling billions of dollars weapons right under your long nose here in African market.

not even one single Rooivalk helicopter has been sold for many years and NOBODY will buy this bad market product you are boasting about. Rooivalk is more likely to become d.ead than alive.

Go market it in your south African village. Your Rooivalk is a big international failure and all the noise you make here cannot sell it. Put half of it in storage like your money wasting Grippen jets.

The rooifalk was only ever marketed to turky but lost due to them wanting somthing used by NATO. No other county was in the market for a fresh production helicopter while the production line was open.

The sytems used on the rooifalk form the bass of the Hind upgrade program that we do. So it was not a waist. No one bought our airfram yes but they have bouth every thing else.

Henry120: I do have to agree with my compatriot agaugust. Why has the south african rooivalk failed so much. Apart from south africa and maybe zimbabwe, I do not know of any other country in africa that use the rooivalk or even the lynx for that matter.

An intelligence officer here in nigeria once told me that the south african helos do not have good nor dependable technology.

Your MRAPs are very popular, uganda, kenya, burundi have lots of them. Same cannot be said of your helos. South africa is the only country that flies them.

Please do not compare the MI-35p or MI-24V to the rooivalk, it's an insult to the russians. The MI's are battle tested and proven helos, more than 60% of the countries in the world fly them. It shows how good those birds are.

They have the same sytem has the hinds agreia uses. We upgraded them. The airfram has not sold but all the sytems, avionics, wepaons, rotar blads, seat extra have been put in hinds. They called Supper hinds.

The hind used in the movie blood diomonds and lord of war belonged to SA. It even flown by SAAF so we know what the hind can and can not do.

The super hind (the SA upraded hinds) are even better than some of the russian hinds. Though russia has started a upgrade program.

The rooifalk was all so upgraded last year.

pleep: Do you guys know what kind of heavy bombers (like the b52) the Nigerian a/o south African militaries have?

Do we have any?

saaf had a few canbra and buccernia they not B52 size but are classed has bombers. There are still a few that can fly but non are in active servise and the gripen/hawks can cary LGBs and other pression guided ground attack muntsions so there is no need for a bomber
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Nobody: 9:18am On Mar 18, 2013
Capnd143: I beg to disagree with a few point of yours. The rooivalk is a good helicopter, though nt to international taste! The SA guys overate the weapons, thats an established fact, the tried marketing their goods in the international arena when the didnt try getting the african market first [ especialy nigera and ethiopia as at then] bt the chose to play white guys, and the got isolated.

We african have such a love hate relationship that we barely trade more than 20% of GDP within the continent.

The Rooivalk issue had some sabotage along the way also especially from the US when when Turkey wanted to by them, but US and Italy gave them more lucrative defense deals and there membership with NATO, including Turkeys long-term ambition to join the EU was also a blow to international marketing of the gunship.

I will give the the specifications on the top 5 helicopters in the AH class later so that we can clerify this propaganda that only the west and russia can build the best helos

Lastly fool the leopard is not a long range bomber how the hell will you reach SA from which is ± 8000km away

F00LISH snydergp do simple mathematics when you google the shortest air distance along a great circle longitude from calabar airport to pretoria, and add 5 drop tanks extra fuel for the leopard with 4 more hardpoints for 2 air to air missiles and 2 bombs 1,000 lb. the nigerian flying leopard is coming and you are not safe, go hide your wife and children in the a cave hole you F00L.

You sure it can take that many heavy loads on it's hard points. And with only 2 AAMs and over a country with a masive ground nbassed radar the hawks would be enough. And with out any LGB's or ASMs it will have to come in close to be threat. Great targets for the radar guided 35mm AAA and starstreak SAMs. Please use logic. Any case you going yto just fly over SADC. Angloa MIG23 fleet alone will handel nigeria.

Since there's been a lot of nonsense talk about the ROOIVALK and its systems versus other helicopters I will now give the specs of 4 AH-attack helicopters and so the public can judge. I left the Mi-24/35p out because its not in the class of the others. This will include the A129-Mangusta which Turkey chose over the Rooivalk due to politics.

Overall on points the Rooivalk and Mi-28 are far better machines. Now you work out why Turkey chose the Agusta A129 Mangusta and not the Rooivalk was it because of avionics or NATO/EU political reasons.

I hope this settles the issue

And the apachy has one very strong point. The longbow radar.

On the long bow yes its a stronge point but this was a answer to question about whether the rooivalk is a outdated attack machine.
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Nobody: 1:42pm On Mar 18, 2013
now here is the other two helicopters in the AH category

Kamov ka-50 Black Shark
-Crew, 1
-Length, 16,0m (52ft)
-Max take of weight 10,800kg (23,810lb)
-Max speed, 320km/h(170knots, 196mph)
-Cruise speed: 270km/h (145knots,168mph
-Range, 545km (339mi)
-Ferry range, 1,160km (720mi)

[b]Eurocopter Tiger

-Crew 2 (pilot and gunner)
-Length, 14,08m (46ft)
-max take of weight, 6000kg(13,000lb)
-Max speed, 290km (with mast 315km) (157knots, 181mph)
-Rang 800km, (430nmi, 500mi) combat with external tank.
-Range of climb, 10,7m/s (2,105ft)

Now in comparison with my previous post here's the overall capabilities based on avionics.

-Lenght: ROOIVALK is the largest (18,73m-61ft)

-Max speed: Mi-28 faster (320km/h)

-Cruise speed: ROOIVALK is faster (278km/h)

-Range: Eurocopter is better(800km) including external tank inboard/ excluding external tank the Apache and Rooivalk is better.

-Combat radius: Rooivalk is better (excluding external tank)

-Ferry range: Apache is better

-Rate of climb: both ROOIVALK and Mi-28 is better and equal.

Overall all helicopter posted has its strengths. The Rooivalk which is a third world machine still remains a formidable helicopter by any standard in its class.

please stop wasting our time here with south African Rooivalk helicopter that no country wants to buy and it has never been battle tested.

South Africa made strategic business mistake by producing a helicopter with no market to sell it, and more photos of it were made than number of real life physical production of the Rooivalk.

Next time learn to walk before you run.

Please do us favour here and stop wasting our time on a half d.ead south African helicopter project.

Has Nigeria ever built or upgraded anything that can fly.

Everything you buy must be sent to Europe for simple modifications. Atleast we in SA use and build our own.

SA don't by old outdated second hand 737-500 planes.

What have you posted here that's worth mentioning Leopard-II which only came into service late 2011 and no one has bought it yet you claim NAF already flies them you are a LIAR AND FRAUD just shut up. You have never worked a day in your life in the security industry.

Show us the freakin link of the leopard being in service in the NAF, FRAUDSTER.

You showing your level of ignorince.

The rooifalk was devloped during the border war. And incoperats many of the lesones learned from the fighting there.

The rooifalk was never ment to be a export item. It was built because SA was under sactions and unable to buy any thing.

100% lies. You don't spend 1$ billion dollars on a military project that is not for export...that is the only way these military companies are able to recoup their losses from production.

The rooivalk is the biggest military flop in African history.

1. You spend 7 billion rand to develop a helicopter design and only end up building 12. (none of which are fully operational)

2. have not managed to export a single one

3. It took yall almost a decade to create, by the time it was finished the technology was already obsolete

4. It uses 20 year old computers

5. There is no support system...(many of the support manufacturers are invested in competitors.)

6. It cost $40 million each unit. More than a brand new Apachi!

FAIL.

.... The Nigerian military is just a straw stabbed in the back of the country sucking money for Europe and Asia. Agaugust & Co' we havent created anything so we really have nothing to be proud of here... the Nigerian military is a joke.

pleep: 100% lies.

FAIL.

you are a fool

We had a need during the border war and back then it was a war money was not a issue. By the time the war was over the production was so far in it was better to finish the deal

wrong all where just made operational

They where only overd to turkey

and they where just upgraded

has i said they where just upgraded

and we could not buy them since we where under sanction.

pleas think before you speak.

Are you stup*d or just plane ignorant, did you even read the follow up report on the same article which I posted from engineeringnews.co.za even wiki has the latest report on the rooivalk. I even gave u the specifications on the rooivalk vs the apache and mi-28.

You said none of them are operational yet the same sites 2013/03/14 report said the upgrades where complete and the SAAF has the full complement of the rooivalks available.

Stop showing your foolishness, reading is free if you have the brain to comprehend simple English.

you are wrong. Nigeria manufactures weapons from machine guns to mortars to night vision equipment to bullet proof vests to armoured personnel carriers to unmanned air drones, and all productions are increasing every day, also we will soon manufacture heavy artilery.

Many years ago Nigeria produced the air beetle aircraft we stopped due to government lack of support from the military politicians of those past years. Try spend time to see their posts and photos from pages 15 to 95 page of this thread topic, you missed the action those days. Air beetle aircraft was not posted but I can do that tomorrow, its a Nigerian light aircraft air force trainer produced some years ago

Dude. The air beetle, seriously

I love my people, but i'm sorry that is a joke. The air beetle is a homebuilt kit aircraft that teenagers in the united states make in their garage for science projects!

and to make matters worse it was designed by van, a foreign company, not even by Nigerian technology.

As for the armoured personnel carriers they are just Toyotas with extra armor melded on. The chasies, powertrain, engine etc was made in foreign countries. Look at this thing, its a joke! https://www.nairaland.com/309607/yaradua-inspects-nigeria-made-armoured-personnel

I know we manufacture the AK-47, but that is only from 1 factory, say a missile hit that factory.... pwaam we have to import guns again. And that technology in itself is not impressive because not only are small arms obsolete, but the AK is probably the easiest and cheapest gun on earth to manufacture.

Is this toy something to be proud of?
