Today I heard my father describe someone as "iri l'eji eme mmanu l'aka di-eri" (or "nri eji eme mmanu n'aka na-eri" for a more standardized Igbo). Not really sure if it's considered a proverb or not, but I decided to post it here, because I like it. I take it to mean that he's saying the person was difficult to handle and that people would have to be careful and take their time when dealing with that person so that things can work out. Otherwise, dealing with the person will prove to be unpleasant (or just plainly problematic).

Anyway, Igbo ekelee m unu.

I'm not quite sure you wrote out what he said correctly. I can't make a clear meaning out of it. Maybe it's the tone?

Well, I think I wrote it correctly. At least, I hope I did. When my father said it, what I heard was "iri l'eji eme mmanu l'aka di-eri". If it helps though, it is Ngwa Igbo. Is there a particular part that you can't make a clear meaning out of? or is it the entire statement?

I understand each word but the not the sentence as a whole. Maybe a translation of the standardized Igbo version you gave (in bold above) into English would help.

Oh okay. Well, the way I understood,  the "iri l'eji eme mmanu l'aka di-eri" is utara that is so disheveled and sticky that one would have to touch palm oil so that it is easier to work with, enabling it to be molded it properly to be round. I asked my father about it, and he confirmed that I understood it correctly. And now that I think about it. . . the translation would have made more sense had I translated it to, "nri eji emetu mmanu n'aka na-eri". Sorry, my mistake. I didn't think the translation through enough.
Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by echelon(m): 7:57pm On Jan 20, 2009
Yeah, makes sense now.

ChinenyeN:

"nri eji emetu mmanu n'aka na-eri".
A better rendering in Central Igbo is: Nri a ga-emetu mmanu n'aka wee na-eri. "eji emetu" above translates to "used to touch" which is misleading.

Thanks for the clarification.

Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by youngies(m): 9:50am On Jan 21, 2009
Echelon, isn't central Igbo (Igbo izugbe) a dialet of a particular group? I mean some group speak it as their everyday Igbo language. If it is so, why was it chosen as being 'central' (izugbe)?

Birikwa!
Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by echelon(m): 7:39pm On Jan 21, 2009
Tough question bro.

Maybe because it's intelligible to all Igbos. Please note that some words are still borrowed from other dialects for the Igbo Izugbe though.

i dont think igbo Izugbe is the everyday lang. of any part of igboland.igbo izugbe however looks more of Anambra/Enugu dialet than of Imo/Ebonyi/Abia.
Guess its chosen as the central Igbo cos its more easier to be written and pronounced.

Ify ndewo!

Your postulation may not necessarily be correct. Now let us look at some igbo izugbe words and see if they are more of Anambra/Enugu or Imo/Abia

English words Igbo izugbe usage Anambra/Enugu dialect Imo/Abia dialect
land/ground          ala                  ana                                     ala

night                 abali                     abani                                   abali
now                 ugbua                    kita                                   ugbua
one                 otu                         ofu                                   otu
food                 nri                         nni                                   nri
bed                 nani                      soso                                   nani
long/tall           ogologo                 ogonogo                                   ogologo
Leg/foot           ukwu                    okpa                                  ukwu

Note that I am not trying to assert that all igbo izugbe are of Imo/Abia origin, but to prove that it is not more of Anambra/Enugu dialect like you asserted.
