@OP dats the current trend in our society for now, most families live apart due to the nature of job, the most important thing is having a mutual agreement with your spouse on how to plan your life's. money is important no doubt! knowledge is more important, taking a paycut might seem smart in the short run, but can u sustain ur family on dat, staying wit ur current job means u have @ most a yr to endure the distance apart from ur family- so hang in there mate! if u hate d traffic get a powerbike! |

Job satisfaction describes how content an individual is with his or her job. The happier people are within their job, the more satisfied they are said to be. Job satisfaction is not the same as motivation, although it is clearly linked. Job design aims to enhance job satisfaction and performance, methods include job rotation, job enlargement and job enrichment. Other influences on satisfaction include the management style and culture, employee involvement, empowerment and autonomous work groups. Job satisfaction is a very important attribute which is frequently measured by organizations. The most common way of measurement is the use of rating scales where employees report their reactions to their jobs. Questions relate to rate of pay, work responsibilities, variety of tasks, promotional opportunities the work itself and co-workers. My brother that is just the theoretical aspect of it, I remember then my lecturer do advise us to be more of a rational being than addicting to theories that are not in conformity with our environment . You need not to ponder, just keep your present job and who says you cant develop more as an independent media consultants or operator instead of working for someone. That gap is just too much to re consider, your present status (financially) will be hard to trim and the family you are caring for too might be affected. I wish you luck in all endeavours. |

@ Poster I think all that need to be said have been said so the choice is entirely yours to make. Please sieve all the responses gotten so far and take the ones that suits you best. If I were u I will pay more attention to chaircover, agaba, and henry64’s post. even if N90k is enough for your family now wot happens when u decide to expand Or are u ok with just one kid Will N90k carry 3 children, wifey and you for a month Your wife is almost done with school so she can relocate. There are several radio houses in lagos and you bet they pay far more than 90k. Well to me I think Enugu is for people that are laid back. There are far more prospects and better opportunities in Lagos than Enugu. |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by bencobenz(m): 4:14pm On May 20, 2010 |
Hi good people, i need constructive suggestions pls, i am married with a son, wifey is a student in 3rd yr. I worked as a tv presenter and later moved on to radio as a presenter/producer/DJ, i did this for 4years of my life and loved every minute of it. Later moved to banking where i stayed for 3yrs but now i am an asst mgr in an IT firm, i take care care of their branding issues. My problem now is that cos of skool i stay far from my young family, i am in Lagos and the are in Enugu, secondly i hate Lagos cos i awake 4:30am everyday and leave my house 5:30am to avoid traffic. I earn close to 250k a month with other incentives but yet i am not satisfied with the job, Lagos, the traffic (the fact that i have to struggle driving to & fro work against heavy traffic) and most especially not being close to my family. I just got an appointment to move back to radio in the east, 1hr drive away from my family for a salary of 90k a month, a flat, health insurance and 6months salary review. What should i do? i love media, its my life but taking a paycut of 150k for job satisfaction is scary? i need your honest contributions, u could be saving a life, waiting for your answers, one love! |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by Afroprince(m): 5:18pm On May 20, 2010 |
wow! i am overwhelmed by the responses i got here, i really appreciate you all for your responses. I've asked my wife at the first contact by the radio and she confessed she fell in love with me as an entertainer and would not mind me coming back to radio. She also models so she understands my pain, secondly, my BP is getting high lately and thats another food for thought on leaving Lagos. The BP started here in Lagos and i wanna leave it here, lol, but really its been hard for me lately. The amount to be added was not written in the contract that the radio sent me but it was specified that their must be a raise. Moreover the boss that wants me back worked with me in same radio station in Abuja, he got this new place and wants me back, i dont think he will mess with me on money issues. I am gonna call my wife again 2nite, discuss it some more, point out the paycut and the result it may bring, then i will give y'all a feedback. Thanks for watching my back peeps! Many people are in my shoes, looking for a way to solve this kind of issue, this will definitely help other people, not only me. I will reach my decision soon, i have prayed but have not received an answer yet or is it that i have failed to really listen well? |

@ Poster, You need to do some mathematics to put some variables in perspective. You need to quantify the following: A. Gains of leaving your present job i. Proximity to your family ii. Job satisfaction iii. Less stress: light traffic, good closing time iv. Reduced expenses: free medical bill, free accomodation, less car maintenance cost, less fuel consumption (gen and car) B. Losses arising from quiting your current job for the Enugu job i. Salary cut (quite easy: 160k) You will need to put value to all items under A (i - iv) and then do Total B - Total A. If your answer is positive, then stay in Lagos. If negative, then pack your bag and head for Enugu. This is the quantitative analysis of your situation. Now here is my qualitative analysis: i. About 80% of the people in Nigeria do not have job satisfaction (my perspective) and honestly speaking job satisfaction would not put gari on your table. Only money will. ii. 160k salary reduction is no yams. Is your wife ready to give up all the goodies you send to her and your child just to have you around her? What about families who depend on you - i mean your brothers, sisters, father, mother, friends, relatives etc? Will they stop asking you for money just because you now have a 90k job? Or do you spend your money alone? iii. You can still satisfy your passion for media in Lagos. There are so many media houses in Lagos. If you are so good and talented, it won't be long for one of them to find you and offer you a job with a decent pay. iv. Your wife will soon finish school and can join you in Lagos. V. Finally, Lagos is where you can nuture your brains to achieve utmost personal and career development more than what Enugu will offer you. the best in media profession are in Lagos and they will challenge you a great deal to continue to strive towards professionalism and perfection. You may end up being a local champion in Enugu. The choice is still yours to make. I wish you all the best. |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by Meldrick(m): 6:17pm On May 20, 2010 |
Someone made a very good point (the second post) and that is reality. Sincerely 75 - 80% of people in Nigeria do not have job satisfaction. They only work for the money because it has become imperative. You gat to pay ur bills and you relatives keep breating heavily down ur neck. My dear I agree with you on the peace you experience outside Lagos but sincerely the opportunities are in Lag. Your wife will surely graduate and she will need a job. You have to allow her catch into the windows of opportunities in Lagos. I strongly advise you endure in Lagos and make more money. Men 90k looks so large but it is nothing especially with a family man. After you must have settled well with your family in Lagos (especially when ur wife secures a job), you can start exploring your area of interest but now chase the cash. |

I will not decieve you, renumeration shld be your main focus now. It doesnt seem that you dislike your job so much as you dislike having to inconvenience yourself in a city you dont like and having to live so far away from family. For me i would give anything to either move to a large city or stay where i've lived for the last 4 yrs of my life - settled friends, low cost of living, stable job (with low pay though for starters) . . . but i got another job in a tiny city (at least 90% smaller population wise than i'm used to) but the pay is very very good and the job sounds exciting. Like someone said, you're young . . . this is your time to work hard and save, save, save for the rainy day. A N150k pay cut is no chicken change. |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by knotty(m): 7:28pm On May 20, 2010 |
which of the jobs is going to make you independent in the not too distant future? you are not going to build a radio/TV station so soon at this rate? i doubt. as a brand manager, you are likely to learn the ropes and dare to start on your own tomorrow. given these scenarios, as an entrepreneur, my candid opinion is WAIT, DAMN THE LOSS, LEARN, BE THE BEST BRAND MANAGER AND START YOUR OWN BIZ tomorrow. but then again, i have to be mindful of your rising BP. it is no joking or trivial matter. Media practice will not chase it away, neither will IT Branding. what will chase it away is a work place of independence and rest of mind. paid employment, in infinuum, will not help too. think of doing something for yourself tomorrow. that pay, that bigger salary, those side cuts which are aplenty in Lagos can be used to gain the much needed independence tomorrow, mark my word. When pepper rest tomorrow, your family will say: THANK YOU DADDY FOR MAKING THE SACRIFICE FOR US YESTERDAY. |

Ok, thanks knotty and everyother Nairalander that has contributed to my thread, heard ya. Just spoke to my wife some minutes back, told her the realities the paycut will present and she said she is ready for it and its challenges as long as i am happy with it, that she only wants me to be happy. Asked my mum and sisters as well and they are supporting the media move. Now i dont know if its cos of my recent health complains or that the really want me to do media. If only i can hear God, If only i can see tomorrow! Please God, help me make this decision, i must confess it aint easy for me! Prayer warriors on nairaland pls do help out on this issue, i am still very confused but i know my heart wants media but my wish is the IT pay. One poster wanted to know if i stay far from my office, i actually stay in Surulere but work in Lekki, trust me the traffic alone coming down from Lekki to VI is killing talk of S/lere especially that Ozumba Mbadiwe road, it took me almost 4hrs to make it home today. |

@ Poster my own 2kobo: Lets be realistic here, how easy do u think it is adjusting a family from a 250k budget to a 90k one. u have a wife and son in question, if u were single, it wont be much of a problem, but considering two extra mouths Secondly u say ur wife is in 3rd year in Uni, are u the one sponsoring her or is it her family? does she have a part time job or is she solely dependent on u? do u pay her school fees, accommodation, and upkeep? am sure u know the consequences of -150k from ur salary From what u said the only enticing thing in the new offer is the free accommodation. talk to ur wife about it, if u guys come to a compromise, fine but In my candid opinion, stick ur ass to that job, @least till wifey is out of school and maybe has started workin. with ur years of experience it wont be soo difficult switching jobs when u want to |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by Ndipe(m): 11:18pm On May 20, 2010 |
The man is complaining of BP and yet, some are encouraging him to stick with the job in Lagos. Afroprince, which one is more important, your health or making more money. You are in a difficult situation, but God will see you through. After six months, you might get a raise from 90k. |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by agabaI23(m): 1:58am On May 21, 2010 |
Ndipe: The BP is there already, if the family has a history of BP, their is nothing he can do about it which is most likely the case. So moving back to Enugu will not cure his BP. He can only manage it and that can do in both places. Stick to your Job. |

Believe me, poster will have more bp problems worrying about money and calculating how to spread 90k to pay all the bills. Your wife says whatever will make you happy so i'm guessing your marriage is still very new and fresh, lol.those groovy dreamy days where love is clouding the mind. I'd advise for you to talk this over with her face to face so you'll explain the full consequences and gravity of this decision, maybe she's just saying it so you'll quit whining and complaining about the commute. Other people have suggested you look for work in this your media somewhere in Lagos or Abuja where you have the opportunities to cast your net wider. I do not know which other way to open your eye to the dryness, the mediocrity, the lack of drive in that place you want to relocate to. Cosmo fm which would have at least paid you in hundreds of thousands is now defunct. The guys that worked there have left to look for greener pastures, some even moved to work in the new cool fm for cool cash.i don't know why your own is 90k. I wish i could glue your bum to your job in Lag but unfortunately, i cannot. For the mom and sisters encouraging you,i hope you made it very clear that an end will come to all allowances cos you simply will not have money to spare.I'm just saying this so that no one will say that since you moved to Enugu your wife has made you to stop sending money. Heck, with that salary, you'll have to struggle to pay for a creme school in enugu for your baby. Have you thought about job opportunities for your wife who is graduating soon? Is Enugu the best place for her to start her career? The main jobs in there are doctor, banker, lecturer, secretary, daddy's money or self employed. Nothing good comes easy, you must not be in love with your job or surroundings, your main drive should be to provide the best possible life for your family. You should put them FIRST not yourself. Think hard and good.God has blessed you with a good job and a good pay.You can save your media talents for later when you have saved enough. A word is enough for the wise sir.I'm sorry for being a bit harsh. May God lead you in making the right decision. |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by Zaynee63: 8:28am On May 21, 2010 |
You are not enjoyn the 250k job? Free accomodation for the 90k job in Enugu? And all ur people are supportn the decision to move; And Lagos hassles is giving you BP- My Guy your equation don balance! Time to make a decision. Strong Point: If you are truly getting free accomodation in Enugu, there won't be any much of a difference between the 250k job in Lag and the 90k job in Enugu. Why? I must presume that accomodation, fuel, feeding et al consume maybe like 2/3rd of ur pay. I don't know how much you are able to save but that 2/3rd will be the equivalent of 1/5 when u get to Enugu. Plus, you get to be with your family: EXTREMELY IMPORTANT Pray! But I believe the answer to your prayers is getting clearer, |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by dbbest(f): 8:36am On May 21, 2010 |
@ Poster, I am just reading through your post and I hope you have not yet taken the decision of resigning from your present job. Please don’t! 250k is almost triple of 90k. Besides, your wife will soon be through with her studies then she can relocate to Lagos with your kid. I understand your passion for career in radio presentation and all that but you can also get that kind of job with a pay that is reasonable within the range of your current pay. You see, it is easier to adjust upward than to do same downward. Talking about traffic in Lagos, it affects everybody. I don’t know where u stay currently in Lagos but with a pay of 250k/month, u can be able to afford nice accommodation in places like ebute metta, sabo , yaba n co. that are not too far from the island. Whatever the case, just think about it and not throw away 250/month for 90/month. You never know the kind of challenges that awaits you at the so called 90k/ month job. With 250k/month you can be able to make reasonable savings that can assist you in considering option of raising enough funds and start your own business in the nearest future. Just ponder about it and may the Lord bless you, |
Re: I Am Confused - Job Satisfaction Or Renumeration? by Afroprince(m): 10:23am On May 21, 2010 |
Bless you dbbest, I've not resigned yet, still thinking and praying. I have also told the media house to try and up the offer to 120k, even if there will be a raise later, i need to start well. A lot of people wouldn't know but media houses don't pay much, including Cool and Cosmo some guys mentioned here, they presenters make up with side shows, voice-overs etc. What matters most in media is your ability to command a presence and make sense while on-air. Radio is a lovely job as long as you know your "P" but right now i am not just thinking about me but also a lot of people that i assist but i rather not live my life alone for peeps cos if anything happens they will definitely find their rhythms elsewhere! I AM THINKING DEEPLY, LETS SEE HOW EVERYTHING PLAYS OUT! |

There is different between Job and Work. Job is what you are paid to do while work is what you love doing without salary you can still do it. Work is what you do that satisfy you, what makes you happy. pls take your time and decide what you want then go for it |

Remain on your 250k job, and u'r surpose to be complainn about your family and not the traffic . . . what is traffic? some people earn more lesser salaries than u and stil face the same complaints u'r complainin but they'r still ok with it. stay there for more 1yr and then u can think of quitin the job if u wanna, but to me, i'll lyke u to stay there permanent. bring your family down 2 lagos so u won't miss them. look 4 sometin 4 your wyfe to start doin so she can earn her own moni also then as tyme goes by, if u check to urself that u'v gotten enough 'chedah' (money) u can quit the job if u'r tyred of it and then start whatever job that suits your feelin. And i see no reason why u have to seek for an advice for that sef, . . just b'cos of traffic u wanna start loosing 150k every month? . . . almost 2million naira every yr? . . u well at-all? Guy e be lyke say u don hammer enough chedah (money) sef com dey look 4 advice on how u go take spend am, b'cos NA PERSON WEY GET ENOUGH DEY MAKE CHOICE! . . . U NEED TO BE WISE MAN! |

@ ALL no point wasting your saliva. He's hell bent on the east media, Well, goodluck to you sirr and God speed I wish you all the best. I was quite close to the cosmo people and they were recieving in the hundreds, plus side gigs as djs, voice overs etc. Some even went into music production, and freelancing to make a quick buck, Most have escaped from enugu though. By the way, most of them are young boys in their mid-late twenties, No responsibilities. It's not like i'm saying that all your money will come from the salary, NO, all dem side gigs are far and inbetween, Media is not as lucrative in the east. The time spent building that presence down there could be well spent elsewhere raking in so much more. Thing is this, your mind is made up. I officially throw in the towel. God's grace sir !!! |

I hope u find this real life experience useful. In the not too distant past, i left a job i was supposed to love for another one that offered better pay, better pay on paper! A month into the job,I realized I made a big mistake in leaving the job for the one that offered "better" pay. 4months into the job,I left even when i have nt gotten another job simply becos my mind and my life was not in the job and it did nt give me any joy whatsoever. I learned the hard way. Go for what gives u satisfation. |

@poster My candid advice and opinion on this pole is that vivdly put your family interest first in all you do cos whatever decision that is made now would later come back on your family. afterall ove 14 million people live in lagos and yet they survive. Consider yourself lucky to be on a payroll of 250k, with flat over your head and a car to navigate your way in. Have ever considered those who do not have all these you have and yet they are living happily. Bless God your wify is almost finishing her schooling, in less than a year she is going to be through, if she could endure all the years she should not complain of less than a year when she is through and deport to Lagos to join you. Lastly, if loving what you do is paramount in your life, there over 20 radio and TV stations in Lagos who would pay more than the meager 90K Enugu is offering you, so why the muss. Put up your applicatiion in any of othese stations and see if you would not be considered even with your 7 years experience in the industry. So pe tie |
