Is The Rover Car Market In Nigeria Lucrative ? by insight04: 12:17pm On May 24, 2010
Hello Folks,

I wanted to start acquiring lots of under 10 year old Rover Cars with a view of exporting and selling them in Nigeria. I wanted to find out if the market for Rover cars in Nigeria is every robust/lucrative? Are the cars easy to maintain and are the spare parts easily accessible in Nigeria? Can the RHD be easily converted in Lagos ?

Thanks

I can really say much about the newer Rovers but for these up to year 1998 i sell them regularly and particularly these that comes with an Honda Engine.
The spares are easy to source and we have many mechanics that can work on them.

Nigerian are using this car very well simply because its economical, the spare parts is common not scarce.

For the conversion of RHD to LHD, I have mechanic that specialised on that in Lagos.

Is the car already on Nigerian soil or you are just making an inquiries, ??

Rover 600 series is the only model I would advice anyone to buy in Nigeria.

The 600 series all run Honda engines and transmission, with the exception of the 620Ti, (Rover T-series) which was a turbocharged 2,0 16V Rover K-series engine, and the sluggish (and thankfully rare) Rover 2,0 diesel.

As per parts, parts are as common as those for the similar year Honda Accord, which was mechanically similar to the Rover 600, and shared pretty much all body panels, bar the bootlid, rear bumper, bonnet, front bumper, as well as lights both ends.

The Rover 45, is pure Rover K-series, and one to avoid, unless you're handy with the spanners, and have a good source of spares. The cylinder heads on all K-series Rover engines is the weak point. Once they blow head gaskets, the cylinder heads are seldom any use, even once fitted with a new gasket, and the surface skimmed, they will still leak, and boil the coolant. If you're unlucky, the cylinder block will be dead too! I've lost count of the K-series engines I've worked upon - either in terms of expensive rebuilds, or outright replacement.

My choices for use / sale in Nigeria?

Rover 600 1,8 / 2,0 8V (Honda unit).
Rover 620 2,0 16V (Honda unit).
Rover 623 2,3 16V (Honda unit).

Avoid the 45 - all were Rover K-series, and one of the most unreliable engines ever resided within the externally attractive bodyshell.

I know its beautiful but when i wanted to get a car, I was informed not to get a rover cos it does not have a second hand value. So pple like me who like changing cars after 1yr, i wont get a market for it swiftly unlike my usual brand - HONDA
Re: Is The Rover Car Market In Nigeria Lucrative ? by femmy2010(m): 10:49am On May 25, 2010
I do not know much about the 2000 models and above but for the regular 600 series with Honda engines it is very user friend and maintenance is easy and mechanics for it abound and there is hardly a 2 weeks that would go by that i would get someone that would place an order for this.

Again for that 600 series that much i can say.

i brought in a 96 model rover 621 si to Nigeria in 2006 and got it converted from RHD to LHD but was poorly done by a quack mechanic. Till date i use the car like that, its the steering that gets hooked whenever i turn it.

I spent over N150,000 dash board N95k steering N22k and the rest for miscellaneous

I wouldn't be driving that car - the consequences of steering failure at speed, when trying to take evasive action, don't bear thinking about.

I do LHD conversions, but I'm far from cheap, because I know the integrity of my work is beyond reproach. I guess ultimately, you get what you pay for.

Re: Is The Rover Car Market In Nigeria Lucrative ? by papadenzel(m): 2:23pm On May 26, 2010
D tin u ppl r not mentioning about rover is dat it works wit too many sensors and there r no good mechanics to work on dat in 9ja, currently d one my guy bought, afta spending so much on it, d dashboard looks like a xmas tree cos too many light dat r just on and never go off, d break lights r always on, and numberous other problem that u'll hardly get good rewires to work on. d parts do not cum cheap also like d shocks wjhich comes with the car is solid with hydraulics et al, u won't even feel d lagos pot holes and bumps, but once dat one spoils, u r on ur own,
