will she be the one holding the life support machine or will she be the one manually controlling the machine? The child is in probably the best hands. she can just ask to leave earlier than usual and not ask to be off work. my opinion tho rottennaija: |

It's obvious from the chat that so far this very boss has been covering for this lady and being human we tend to abuse privileges Nigerians are way too emotional to be objective hence I just laughed off alot of comments here The boss is very right .. The lady in question sounds entitled and is trying to emotionally blacail the boss who will have none of that The child has been in this condition for a while clearly and the company has given her alot of time off but it seems it's getting beyond reasonable hence her boss had to step in Mind you like some smart users pointed out she can do nothing for her child but sit and stare , hut working would.helo her get emotional support and even take her mind off the situation temporarily But instead she sounded like an entitled cunt and chose to even threaten to call corporate? (head office) She doesn't deserve anymore sympathy |

You can't have your cake and eat it. If she wants to stay with d child then she should know she is sacrificing her work simple. The way people bring emotion and sentiments into everything is highly sickening to me. |

So if his stays on life support for 6six month you expect the boss to keep pay there bills. Have you ever work in a private firm before? What exactly will she be doing sitting and crying? If she can't work at optimum then its now left for the boss to consider a leave or something for her. As insensitive as the story might sound am with the boss rottennaija: |

This is why my first preference when I start hiring is to hire through an employment agency. Once the business is known it’s as good as dead if it’s here in the US. |

pp802: you speak as tho you have basic knowledge of the corporate world ,, there is something called leave @least a month , when unprecendent incident arises the personnel dept & management agrees let the staff use his/her leave period to cover for that. a distracted mind is of no use anyday anytime especially when effeciency is paramount 1 Like |

What i dislike is how this boss kept hinting on drama. Except the woman is the devils wife,i don't see how she can use something as grievous as life support for drama. I agree that this woman is not polite and feels entitled but ordinarily someone in her position will not be in a good state of mind. She doesn't want to lose her job because that's what bring the money but at the same time she cannot work. Even if she goes to work, her productivity will be very low.I once left my baby on admission with my sister in a Nigerian hospital to meet a deadline on a non working day and it took a lot of courage for me to do that. Nevertheless i was so restless. I tried to put her in my shoes because i am an employee that holds a sensitive post for my organization to run. I think the boss suggesting outright sack is inhumane. It could have been anyone. Better options will be half pay,pay as you go(pay for only work done) while getting someone else to temporary take her shift on days she wouldn't come, leave without pay etc. Sacking someone in this position will definitely attract emotional bad blood whether in Mars or Jupiter. And if the name of their store leaks, expect some buyers to boycott chikena. 1 Like |

pocohantas:People in distress are not reasoning straight, the Boss is not in that situation, the Boss should be the one saying stuff like, take care of ur Son, keep us informed if anything changes. Then book an Agency, to be honest, if that was the US and UK, the Boss is gone as we speak .Unless they own the company. 1 Like |

As much as it hard for a woman to leave a child on a life support for work, the boss already gave her an option that she should quit. She refuse quitting and also doesn't want to show up at work?? I won't support the woman on this at all and defiantly excepting some pay. |

People just come here and talk trash. Well it there mb sha. Dey say person wey drive motor with mouth no dey get accident. Most folks here fall in the category of people that drive car with mouth. If the woman had left the child in the hospital, and continue her work, Same folks would crucified her. Which mother whose child is on life support will ever concentrate at work? No multinational will ever do so .I pray God gives all good jobs. I work in company where if your child is sick ,every one will be calling to ask how the child is doing including the GM who is white. They give u excuse duty. The business will not crumble because one person is absent. Common Some persons are saying the boss is being professional. Nonsense. You work in companies that do not factor family in its policy and come here and be saying professionals. Professionals my foot. 2 Likes |

erico2k2:I'm not really sure about the statutory minimum number of sick days an employee is entitled to in the UK, but I think it's somewhere about 8 days when the employer is required by law to pay the employee his full rate; afterwards, the employer is required to pay a statutory token amount (something about £90 per week for a further 28 weeks) as long as it is proven that the employee is really ill and unfit to work. Most companies/organizations however have their own policies; I once worked with a company whose sick leave policy stated a full month of full pay, followed by a second month at half pay, after which they now fall down to the statutory £90 per week. After the expiration of the first 2 months, the fate of the employees employment then falls on the discretion of the boss/company; in other words, the employee can be dismissed if the company thinks he is a burden. In the case of the Op, the woman isn't even the one who's ill, so even if it were in the UK, the boss has the right to ask her to return to work immediately of risk a termination. |
Re: Chat Between A Mom Whose Child Is On Life Support And Her Boss by obailala(m): 1:04pm On Jul 03, 2018 |
Pitokwe:I think the point most people are making on this thread is that the boss is within his rights to ask the woman to return to work or risk a termination. The boss may be said to be mean, but he's within his rights, business must continue. Moreover, I think the woman's tone was rather arrogant; she spoke as if it was her right and entitlement to be off work and not lose her contract. Like you said above, may we all work with good bosses and in good companies. |
Re: Chat Between A Mom Whose Child Is On Life Support And Her Boss by adidison(m): 1:09pm On Jul 03, 2018 |
No matter the outcome ... the boss should just forget anybody going out of their way to help the company ... no matter what in business your 1st customer is your workers, well if you want to keep a healthy company ... we don't know the work the woman has put in before, maybe she had many sleepless nights she didn't get paid or so ... we just see the conv ... if my child was on life support I'll come to work and piss on the computer by mistake because my mind isn't there ... the boss can temp get somebody to fill in for her until she is fit to work ... arrangements can be made ... nobody said he is wrong but be considerate. 1 Like |

I gather from the conversation that the employee has previous episodes of not coming to work due to other probable excuses. Even though her boss kept the chat going on for too long, however, he was right. In his shoes, i would have asked her to send an official email and shown some empathy. The boss took it a little too personal which could have been due to the employee's past records. As an employee, you don't need to blackmail your boss or employer with your personal problem. Leave room for people to empathize with you, don't force your problem on people. The employee in this case is exploitative. |

obailala:Im entitled to 1 year full sick pay at work Statuary SSP one you talked about is 28 weeks, this is paid by the Government via the employer. If one get injured during work, You are paid until you are well or the put you in a different role. In the EU, you get paid same years you have put in service. |

HeWrites: Her sense of entitlement is sickening. So the business should stop running because of your son who is already where he's getting care? This is how many ladies also blackmail their spouses but because this is a transactional relationship, the boss can afford to tell her his true feelings without mincing any emotions. |

obailala:There is such thing AS entitlement to be off work, Something we do not have in Nigeria but the western world had recognised long ago hence laws are in place to protect employer and employee rights at work. Each company has its own policy as to how they manage absent from work. We are not talking about AWOL here. |
Re: Chat Between A Mom Whose Child Is On Life Support And Her Boss by Amhappy(f): 1:28pm On Jul 03, 2018 |
I just read the post again and saw where the woman said until 'the child is out of bad' she can't come. So i assume this incident just happened (2-3 days) and the child state is 'critical' not stable. Speaking to corporate is a way to go. If this incident have been weeks, then corporate would have been informed before now. That's a hell of a mean inhumane boss. |

erico2k2:1 full year, that's a very generous company, must be a reasonably large organisation that cares about staff welfare. Different companies have different policies, some of which are negotiable before you sign the contract. |
