Timottee:
For a research assistant position, certain expectations will be required of you.
First, how much experience do you have in conducting research? Research experience is a spectrum that starts with being able to do literature review to being able to commence a study from study design to completion of the study/writing of the manuscript. Other skills in the spectrum include being able to carry out data/statistical analysis, good writing/proof reading/formatting skills, and if your programme involves lab work, experience in the lab. At the very least, they want to know that you can do a proper literature review needed for a study. Typically, the better your research experience, the better your chances. However, many professors are open to taking students who are 'green' in research as long as they know that person is teachable and not rigid.
Second, if it is a professor that is providing the RA, it will be nice if your research interests align with his/hers. Ultimately, you have to become familiar with his/her research work before the interview. Knowledge of his/her research work shows that you are interested in working with him/her.
Lastly, they may also assess your character (this may be through situational questions. e.g. have you ever had a conflict with a co-worker? How did you handle/resolve it?). No professor wants a person who will be disruptive to his/her research team and hence, these questions may be asked.
Note that your ability to effectively communicate will be indirectly assessed during your interview. So you will want to express yourself in simple but effective ways using the language of your field.
Hope this helps. Good success in your interview.
thank you so much bro. I really appreciate you for taking your time to guide me. You have been a man to go to in times of need. God will continue to bless you. Thanks boss! 1 Like |

Anyways, it's a normal thing here in Nigeria, most students are lazy. Good transcript, but like someone suggested, u won't have time for most of your pre-made replies so u need to hit with your best shot. Stick with this Q: why do u intend to study this? I think your reply regarding your Alma mata should come first. They short on staff, n u have their word that u can come back to work. Others might follow, but I guess they might cut u off. Q: what r u doing now? I am a banker and a research assistant with Prof. Bleep on the weekends. Hype yourself small with the right words PS: they might ask what kind of research u doing. Q: how do u hear about this school? A driver n his conductor were discussing the school in the danfo I took between oshodi n ikeja along. Q: why do u chose this school? Start from here ...Also, they have this ongoing project I checked into which is the effect of passive immunization against ghrelin on feed and water intake in U putting your best points for d last, u could be shut down before u hv an opportunity to talk about it. Q: who will pay for this? My father is the number one importer n exporter of anything LG in the whole of Lagos. Nna forget, we got d money. Stop embarrassing me with this question Very good one but use your best points first. I highlighted them already. PS. I don't know a lot about Visa thing, just common sense. 3 Likes |

What you intend to do after your study is not clear. You talk about NAFDAC and that you will like to work at u your Alma-mata... Is the Bleep university you volunteered for on pub hols and weekend your Alma-mata?If yes then it better to talk about the open position in your Alma-mata first. Then, use the idea of NAFDAC has a long-term plan. |

I was delayed at the Lagos Consulate last year and I hope to go back soon for interview.Intially, I went with EIU and my course was sustainable energy now I hope to go with TAMUK which is Electrical Engineering... I envisage this question:what has changed about your application. Here is the response I came up with: My current application is across various domains as it combines not just science and technology management but emhasized engineering which address more of my professional problems. This application is more broad, opens me to different challenges as compared to the a more specific and narrower previous..
