invisible!:

Sometimes I wonder if you are Nigerian, what tiny percent does almajirin kids make? What of other kids?
I think the jobless in America suffer more than those in naija cause its all man to his own, you ask if they dont have families? What are you talking about, do they come back to sleep in their fathers house in naija?
Be realistic, where else does nigerians sleep under few bridges except Lagos? But in US every city have homeless peeps sleeping on city parks and anywhere.
Who are these almajiri's he keeps  on  about anyway and what is their number? Are they not islamic relgous pupils who are under the control of senior teachers called mallams. They still form a very tiny percntage of kids in Nigeria despite their headline grabbing acts of extreme volence.
However, the raison d'etre behind their existence is Islamic extremism not  poverty.

cap28:

see how illiteracy is wreaking havoc in nigeria!!! where did you get the above information from dummy? have you lived in america before? do you understand anything about the socio economic structure of america, try keeping your mouth closed for a few seconds and listen to the rubbish that swirls around in that thing you call a brain. the unemployed in america are entitled to welfare, food stamps and medicaid fool, unless you can give me an example of a similar programme in nigeria then you are just talking out of your back passage once again.

IBB really destroyed the educational system in nigeria and i can see by your way of reasoning that you are one of its casualties!!
Well that information is totally irrelevant to the discussion Just imagine what you are saying. That a grown man who receives food stamps from the government is better off than those who rely on the extended family network. Are we in fact comparing formal government welfare systems in the 2 countries??
And who in fact told you that this welfare package is not of strictly limited duration after which the recipient is expected to fend for himself?

no its completely relevant to the discussion, some delusional individuals are claiming that they would rather be unemployed and even homeless on the streets of lagos rather than homeless and unemployed in america.
A  grown man who receives food stamps from the govt is a man with food in his stomach who doesnt have to go a begging!!! perhaps you're one of the lucky ones who have reliable , kind hearted relatives, that can not be said of everyone, the welfare system takes away the uncertainty of not knowing where your next meal will come from and i know i would prefer to apply for food stamps than place my self at the mercy of relatives who may or may not decide to help.

Your argument makes no sense - so what if its only for a limited time - the idea is not to create dependency but to provide a TEMPORARY MEANS OF SUPPORT until you can get back on your feet.  Isnt that better than not knowing where your next meal with come from the minute you loose your job or you exhaust all your savings?

How would you feel if your brother lost his job tomorrow and had to camp out in your house with his wife and kids because he had no money for food or rent? Wouldnt you prefer it if he could apply for social security benefits to tide him over until he could get back on to his feet.?
Some people just enjoy defending the indefensible!!!!!

Look here Cap you need to be careful not to get drawn into an ideological battle between socialism and capitalism as that is neither here nor there.
However you  know and I know that it is the consistency strength and efficiency of the American free market system that has enabled them source the funds that would finace these sorts of welfare systems.
That is not to say that informal welfare systems do not exist in Nigeria for example the one carried out by churches and missionaries  not to mention the vaunted extended family support network which are both useful for other more positive things like employment offers and advice and even accomodation.

to add to what i said before, look the world is coming to an endamerican and europe have all abandoned GOD,do you know why america is so blessed,'because this is was a nation founded on GOD,but today what is happening?those nations that were formerly look down upon by the western world are now rising up and ruling the world market, check out china, today america is owing china money, today america is heavily in indebted, look at recent market crash that almost brought europe to its knees but look at india today they are growing rapidly

India is a 3rd world country and the gap between the rich and the poor is very wide, like that of Nigeria. Most Indians havent benefitted from the economic recovery of their country. Look at the number of beggars in that country.

9ja is not as bad as u guys are trying to make it look. yes there are almajiris but have u forgotten that they have a muslim cleric compd they will all go back to sleep at nyt. Our problems are there but they always heavily magnified by the western media. I quite agree with buzugee, the rich man in 9ja can decide to shop at palms go to silverbird gallleria etc the poor man has a close substitute, by shopping at mama tawas outside the houz kiosk or yaba or oshodi, he can also rent VCDs @ NGN50 to watch films. You shd realise that the western media has always and will always keep portraying africa(not only nigeria) in bad lyt to stiffle investment flow into the continent.

In conclusion, we all make choices in life and we should always stand by them. If u chose to leave the 9ja and make other countries your home its your choice and make God help u but it is not a license to talk down on the people back home.
I STRONGLY CONCUR. lmao @ mama tawa grin

I think the situation in Nigeria for alot of people is bad. I do not understand why anyone would think that all Nigerians are living well. The Western Media may show us in some negative light sometimes but some of the things said are true.

I have met people that are having it really tough in Nigeria and for anyone to suggest that its all good for anyone is just completely off,

Anyway, for anyone who thinks everything in Nigeria is good,  well,  well ,  well,  its all in your head.

Its a great country but it needs change which i hope it eventually gets.

Poverty is not exclusive to Nigeria.

The poor and rich eat same food in Nigeria sha, a rich man buys chicken at shoprite's and a poor man slaughters one of the local chickens roaming around the house and eats.
A rich man buys beef from a big supermarket and a poor man cuts some beef from the local meat seller, plus he has options of goat meat from the one he feeds or bush meat from his traps.
A rich man eats foreign rice and a poor man will eat same rice, (ofada rice)
A rich man has his maggi, spices and seasonings, same as a poor woman who uses her home baked, very smelly and sweet tasting spices, even better sef.
A rich man may chop hot dog from Mr Biggs and a poor man eats his meat pie from the roadside woman. (or if na calabar man, he can enjoy a real hot 404!)
fridge? Have you ever drank cool water from under a mud house with thatched roof? Chilling!
The rich have their plasma, projectors, and wall screens while poor peeps still watch same thing, in a 14inch telly.
