Short answer is no. Naive answer is yes.

If 2020 is a new decade, and a decade is a space of 10 years, then technically 2019 was a new decade too, and the end of a decade (I.e 2008-2019, and 2019-2028). In that case, every year is the beginning and the end of a new decade. So I'm yet to understand the fuss about 2020 being a new decade.

Yes. Every decade in the past has ended with a year ending with 9.
2019 is no different. 2019 is the end of a decade and 2020 the beginning of another.
2009
1999
1989
1979
1969
1959

And so on...

Get it?

Its not rocket science nau!

Happy new year and welcome to 2020. But is it the start of a new decade? Opinions are divided on this matter, as many believe a decade counts from 1 to 10, since the Gregorian calendar has no year zero.

Proponents of a new decade believe we count decades from zero to nine. For instance, Andrew Novick, a scientist at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology tweets that "You wouldn't say that someone born in 1970 was from the sixties, would you?" So 60s as a decade mean a between 1960 and 1969.

Others in the middle believe that the argument is not necessary since a decade is simply "a period of 10 years". Which side of the divide are you? Is it #NewDecadeNewMe or just #HappyNewYear2020?

Zero is a reset, from which you begin a new count. People said zero is not really a number, until they realize you can't have "one" if there wasn't "zero", i.e nothing. So for one to exist, there must be an alternative, a nothing, a null, an empty to start from. In the Gregorian calendar there's no Year 0, but in reality there is. It's the year before Year 1. No one can deny there was a time before Year 1. There was an empty from which to start.

But it goes more than that:

On paper or in your mind, you start counting from 1, you get to 9, then do you reset? Well yes, but then 10 IS a number itself, and also the null beginning of the next batch of 10.

Thus, 2020 is a reset to start counting to the next 10, and is also a valid number because the year exists and we're in it. All events for the next 365 days will be referenced as occuring in the year 2020.

This is true for numbers but not true for time..the period of one year is a period from 0 to 1..

Yea 2020 should be the end of the decade. There was never a year 0 it always starts at 1 so it makes sense that the decade starts from 2011 to 2020.

Both are correct.. 2020 is the start of a new decade(10yrs) i.e the 2020s. Also, 2021 is the start of the 203rd decade according to the Gregorian calendar.
Re: Is 2020 Really The Beginning Of A New Decade? by statusquoante: 10:58am On Jan 01, 2020
Yes it is.

How we count dates is quite different from how we count objects or things. You count objects by counting from one. Not so with dates.

For instance, a baby begins their first year on earth the day they are born. The day they clock 1 year old, they have already spent one year on earth and immediately they begin the 2nd year.

Similarly, by clocking 2020 today, we have already spent 2020 years. Today the 2021st year began.

So, indeed, a new decade has begun.

Yeah, you can argue that the anno domini era begins with year 1 on the Gregorian calendar.

But, does anyone REALLY consider 1990 as part of the 80s decade?

We are calling 2020 the start of a new decade.
Which begins January 1st 2020 and ends on December 31st 2029.

From all of us @ : Happy New Year 2020.

Issa new decade already!
