From 0 to 1 you'd have to count 0.1, 0.2...till you get to 0.9, which is still in the realm of zero and not 1. Even the clock we have 2300 hours then 000 hours; it doesn't jump from 2300 to 0100 hours. So yes 2020 is a new decade. If in the past rhwy jumped from 1 BC to 1 AD then we're actually one year ahead and this should be 2019 and not 2020. |

tedimola: It depends. In the Western world which we copy, we start counting age of the baby after birth but in some countries in Asia, let's say Korea to be precise, the age of a child is counted from the day of conception so the day a child is born, he or she is already one year old. We all know a decade is a period of ten years but if we follow calendar that has already been set, a new decade starts from 0 and ends with 9, so 2020 is the beginning of a decade. 1 Like |

Just in case you're still wondering How Buhari became president. Next they will ask if the day actually begins at 12 midnight. Year 2000 (for those who schooled before this indomie generation) was the start of a new millennium (we didn't ask then if if was the start of a millennium or we are to wait for a whole year before we start counting, we were not that dense) That same Year 2000 was also the start of a new decade that ended in 2009 (millenials, please when counting the years from 2000-2009, include 2000 so you can finally see that its actually 10 years) The next decade began in 2010 and ended yesterday. internationalman: Mr man in the Arabic numbers we start counting from 0 to 9. If you ignore the 0 and start counting from 1 ,you go wrong in a lot of places. Just like the day begins from 0 am, number counting begins from 0 not 1. 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 19 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 As you can see from the above illustration, 10 and 20 is the equivalent of 00. In counting date,you say 1900's, so that explains y you should see 2020 as a new decade,those of us that did statistics determining sample size should know u have to include the number u are counting from,that is 2010 to 2019 is ten digits,so 2020 is a new decade 1 Like |

New decade starts in 2021 just lile new millennium actually started in 2001 but there's no reason not to celebrate twice. My analysis is based on the fact that 1900 is part of the 19th century and 1901 is the start of 20th century. |

I disagree with what many people are saying. Let's take how we determine the century or the millennium for instance. From 1900 to 1999 is generally considered to be .... (complete the sentence). There you have the correct answer, if you know, you don't talk much. |

January 01 1AD to Dec 31 10AD was the first decade

The counting is discrete. So if you count from 2010 to 2019, that’s 10 years and it’s equivalent to a decade! No argument please! Happy New Year!! |

I think we need to separate counting of ordinary number and talking about period of time from the correct counting of years into decades, centuries and millenia. It is true that there are different calendar systems. But should we start counting from 0 or 1? When we moved counting of years from BCE/BC to CE/AD there was no zero year in between. If we started from one, then 1 to 10 is 1 decade, 1 to 100 is 1 century and 1 to 1000 is 1 millennium. These should translate to the first decade, century and millenium respectively. This is different from the counting of numbers because numbers have no value until we attach something to them. In fact the number zero has no value unless it is mixed with other numbers. When talking about period of time,we make no relevance to decade, century or millenium. For example, saying in the '90s or '80s or '60s doesn't mean we are actually talking about a decade. Someone might understand the '90s to mean '91 to '99 and another might mean it is '91 to '00. It's a relative thing just like saying a decade could mean any period of 10 years. But considering that there was no zero year in the switch from BCE to CE the first decade will be counted from year 1 to year 10, the first century will be counted from year 1 to year 100 and the first millenium from year 1 to year 1000. 1 Like |
