Re: Is 2020 Really The Beginning Of A New Decade? by DMerciful(m): 6:59pm On Jan 01, 2020 |
Time is the unlimited continued progress of existence and events in the past, present and future regarded as a whole. Measuring time is what you see as time like hours and days but that's not actual time. Ofcourse Einstein talked about space time continuum and its relationship with the speed of light but went on to say you cannot actually move at the speed of light so it's all theoretical. However, time has nothing to do with man....beginning of time was the beginning of the universe...14 billion years ago LemonBoy1: 1 Like |

I agree time is relative in the context of advance physics but I meant to say there is no difference between 31st December and 1st Jan. The topic of discussion does not warrant going into the theory of relativity and the change of time with traveling towards the speed of light, it's an overkill! opeolu202: 1 Like |

I could remember 2000's was refered to as 21st century. Shouldn't it have been 20th century |

2020 is the end of the second decade of the 21st century, not the beginning of a new decade! By Shepherd Fubara If you dispute, please show it. I have read many write ups on the social media space claiming 2020 is the beginning of a new decade. However, without any details of how they arrived at their conclusion. Please read on and get understanding on the subject matter. *i make bold to say that 2020 is the end of a decade, not the beginning.* Let's start: Let's add 2019 to the AD categorization. 2019AD. AD stands for Anno Domini(After the death of Christ) Moderm civilization/history posited that the Calendar is divided into BC and AD BC stands for Before Christ The years count down in the BC era and count up in the AD era The BC era counts e.g. from 6000 BC down to 1 BC. Then the AD era starts counting 1AD, 2AD, 3AD, 4AD....2019AD if you like. 1AD directly followed 1BC. There was no 0AD in history. AD started counting from 1AD not 0AD The first AD year was 1AD. So the 1st decade in the AD era was 1AD to 10AD. Not 0AD to 9AD The 2nd decade was 11AD to 20AD The 9th decade was 91AD to 100AD making it a century. The counting continue in that line. From available facts, it is impossible to suggest that in the AD era, the first decade started from 0AD-9AD, so the beginning of the first decade of the 21st century couldn't have started from 2000-2009 meaning 2000AD to 2009 and 2010AD to 2019AD. Mathematically, it is impossible for 2000-2009 to be 10. Or 2010-2019 to be 10. Please press your calculate let's confirm. In view of the foregoing, is January 1 2020 the beginning of a new decade? Counting from 1AD....No. This is still the 2nd decade of the 21st century. The 203rd decade will be year 2021AD to 2030AD. It will start January 1, 2021. What is confusing you now? Am sure, it is the assumption of 2000-2009 to be a decade, erroneously counting 0AD going back to history. For instance, if your were born in 1990, do you count your age from 1990 to the current year? Or it is from 1991 to the current year? But when you say the 70s. That is 1970 to 1979 this doesn't apply to the counting of a decade. Counting from 1AD, a decade is for example 1981 to 1990, 1991-2000 ended the 20th century. Centuries are in 100s Last year is in the 202nd decade and it ends in 2020AD, not 2019AD A decade is 10 years A century is 100 years And a millennium is 1000 years The first hundred years was 1AD to 100AD If there was a 0AD, it would have been 0AD to 99AD But there was no 0AD. That's why the 20th century was 1901 to 2000. Not 1900 to 1999! In 1999, people were screaming and excited about Y2K. Year 2000! Wasn't a new millennium!" 2000 was not a new century and it was not a new millennium The first millennium was 1AD to 1000AD The 2nd millennium was 1001AD to 2000AD Year 2000 was still part of the (old) 2nd millennium The new millennium started after December 31, 2000 The new millennium started January 1, 2001 So this is the new millenium: 2001 - 3000AD The 21st century: 2001 - 2100AD And the 202nd decade: 2011 - 2020AD I hope you understand better now. Thank you. 2 Likes 1 Share |

The confusion is the BCE(before the common era) and CE or AD(common era or annoying domini). It seems there was a yr of reset between BCE and AD. However, your theory make far more sense. We are in the end of the 2nd decade of the 3rd millennium Fubarashepherd8: |

We are not talking of seconds and minutes, those are man made units of measuring time but time itself which is the unlimited continued progress of existence. Whatever is existing in the universe is going through time. In simple terms, existence is time! This is quite advanced unless you're a strong physicist however you can read up. Have you wandered why we have 6pm in Nigeria and 9am in some parts of Canada at the same time? Its because man found a way to measuring time using rotation of the earth however time existed before the earth. The birth of the universe was the beginning of time! LemonBoy1: |
