I think Kanu is the best judging by his contribution to the society .. Popularity without impact is nothing in this life. Kanu has made many family rejoice and glad through his foundation. I love the guy's simplicity and contribution to humanity . |

Without sentiment I will give the crown to Kanu. He is my number 1. Other notable players to mention in no particular order include Okocha, Yekini, Finidi, Amuneke, etc. |

Goke7: I disagree. Yekini was a good striker but he has been replaced time and over again by equally talented strikers like Odemwinge, KANU, odion ighalo, obafemi martins, kalu brothers; victor ikpeba, Julius agahowa, victor aghali etc. The list is endless however nobody has been able to fill in the gap left by JJ till this day. Now that's a great player. 1 Like |

Astark: OKOCHA won 1994 Nations cup and 1996 Olympics,2 time Bolton wanderer's player of the year, Voted Bolton wanderer's best ever player, was included in Fifa's 100 living football legends selected by Pele, 2 time BBC African footballer of the year. Was best player at Afcon and also highest goal scorer. The gulf between OKOCHA and Mikel was so much that I stopped watching Super Eagles after he retired due to Mikel's sluggishness, lack of creativity. Talking about Super Eagles performance alone, Kanu was only superb in 1996 Olympics, other times he was just a game changing substitute, MIKEL never had an historic individual moment in super Eagles Jersey. Probably only Odegbami and Rasheed Yekini can claim to have the impact OKOCHA had on games, freekicks, screamers, Penalty kicks, assists, dribbles, Leadership. 3 Likes |

Austineva: nothing special about mikel's career. have you heard about 1996 olympics? kanu literally destroyed brazil in the semi final. A brazil 1996 olympic squad that had the likes of , roberto carloz , rivaldo , ronaldinho , ronaldo de lima(el fenomeno) and juninho . Or when a 32 year old kanu led portsmouth to the fa cup final against cardif city. scored the winning goal. or a 17 year old kanu winning the fifa under 17 world cup in 1993 , scoring five goals plus five assist? there's no way a sensible football fan will compare kanu to mikel. goals? assist? chance created? individual trophy? team trophy? 3 Likes |

For this type of threads. This would depend on the generation you grew up in. To me, it's Yekini, Okocha is at a distant second To Indomie generation, they would say it's Kanu To Lacasera generation, they would say it's Mikel. 1 Like |

Jokerman:Don't mind the so called overrated human being, a whole Rivaldo said openly that if Jay Jay Okocha was from any of d European countries, nothing stops him from winning world best player then. Talk of inventions (dribbling, scoring wow goals, free kicks and entertaining the audience) no player comes close to Jay Jay, its just so unfortunately he did not play for big clubs yet the whole world knows him. A player that will make u enjoy watching football 4 Likes |

Rashidi Yekini. That's because old whites people even remember him abroad, and they will call Nigerians in Mecca, by doing the thumb up, Rashidi yekini. I want that Nigerian again, if u think we can still have that type of country again, kindly quoute me. Let's build our people together |

The fellow mentioning Jay-Jay Okocha obviously does not understand what football is all about...Okocha did all those things in small teams which are not capable of competing for the greatest prizes. Infact Okocha will have no spot in the modern game because his contributions to the team is very little. Okocha can dribble but it takes more than dribbling to attain a reputable height in football... Muller does not dribble but who won't remember Muller. Xavi does not dribble but he is almost the father of forward pass.. I repeat Jay-Jay has no role in the modern game For fellas rating Mikel and Kanu...I analyse based on impact in the role, team and what happens after you leave or retire. 1 Like |

Baselm: Kudos sir This is the best analysis i have read so far. In a team sport like football, It scares me how a player can be so poorly judged because of absense of trophies to his name. Let's forget about Mikel (he is no comparison with kanu and okocha) but okocha was one of the only good thing we had in our national team. Even when the team didn't do well okocha still stood out. He is the Nigerian player ranked most high by world football. Most of kanu's matches for both arsenal and Nigeria, he was a late substitute and you want to compare him to an Okocha that is always the main man around which the whole team is built?? Greats like ronaldinho, Oliver khan, Thierry Henry, Etoo have appraised him highly as one of the greatest. Remember he was obviously robbed severally at the African footballer of the year awards (that's a story for another day). How many times was he nominated again?? Kanu may have got only 2 nominations. (Which he won) Okocha at the world cups was outstanding when kanu was merely average, even the Olympic we all praise kanu for, there were equally dominant performers like amokachi, amunike, oliseh okocha, Celestine. That team was practically unbeatable considering the individuals it was made of. Please do not compare this two guys just by merely looking at thier trophies. Also consider each of them in term head to head in terms of Assists, freekicks, goals, man of the match winners, ratings by CAF, FiFA, has Kanu ever been player of the year/month in any of the club's he belonged? Okocha was among the legends in the club's he played. In the national team, kanu never scored any goal at the afcon, as a striker, is not the highest goal scorer in Nigeria (even okocha has more national team goals), he was a constant substitute all through his career. But okocha was the superstar in the same team Kanu was, he won Nations cup most valuable player, golden boot, many man of the match performances. Even when he moved to the premier League, he deviated the media from the chelseas, man utds and arsenals and suddenly the whole world started watching Bolton. Okocha is the only Nigerian player whom you can boast with an impressive "best of ***" compilation on youtube like ronaldinho, Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, maradona, Pele etc. A player whom the Nigerian supporters club composed a special song for (okocha I gbu o mo, okocha I gbu o ko, okocha) He was so valuable that he maintained "the highest paid african footballer in africa" status for so long. During his whole career you can never see a 1st 11 team list in both club and country without seeing the name "OKOCHA NO 10" but how many times have kanu been in the 1st team both at ajas, arsenal, Nigeria or Portsmouth? Okocha is the only player whom the no 10 jersie in Nigeria should have been patented for. Because No one, I repeat no one has ever matched or deserved that shirt. A player whose every touch on the field gets replayed on slow motion more than 3 times. Even Etoo called the the most talented out of Africa. His only downside is that he didn't play in clubs that were better placed to win trophies else he is the only Nigerian player with a true chance to win ballon d'Or. Even after retirement, he still overplays other footballers like he is practicing with children so tey Etoo beg coach to remove him. Go and watch any of the charity matches okocha is involved (most recently the one with Puyol and heneken last year or last 2 years.). Now If we are all given the option to choose to have one of these players come back as a young chap KANU or OKOCHA, we all know who everyone in the country will vote for. JAY JAY Anyone WHO wants to rewatch a Nigerian match to remenisce the good times would definitely pick one in which okocha is playing. We as a country lost a great ingredient on our national teaam. I only wish God sends us another AUSTINE JAY JAY OKOCHA. (With more ambition and winning mentality) then the sky would be our starting point. Shalom. To KANU and Okocha for what they brought to our football 4 Likes |
