Yujin: W.U Bassey was Commissioned 2 months before Ironsi and his seniority was backdated to 1946 . Ademulegun was Commissioned on the same day as Ironsi. Bassey had joined the Army a good 7 years before Ironsi. If Bassey's Promotions were not delayed he world have been eligible to be Head of the Army and be Governor of the Eastern Region before Ironsi and Ojukwu . I love all Nigerians but Tribalism is evil and has cost us a Civil War already. Bassey's problem was that he was considered to be an Eyo-Ita man because he was from Calabar like him. Zik and his NCNC Ministers preferred Ironsi though they both came from the East and and they influenced the NPC/NCNC coalition Government in favour of Ironsi . Bassey's was abandoned by Zik and his Career suffered a lot. Zik should otherwise have been pushing for Bassey's timely Promotions. But to his credit Zik had expected Ironsi to appoint Bassey Governor of the Eastern Region as a consolation and not Ojukwu . 1 Like |

myboy2111: As were Wellington Bassey and Aguiyi-Ironsi. In fact, Ugboma influenced the commissioning of Bassey and Ironsi. However, there were issues with record keeping at that time. Ugboma was actually in the list of British officers and to make matters worse, he didn't serve in the Nigerian Army (he retired before independence). However, when the Nigerian Army realised the error (that he was listed as a British officer) they gave him the number N1A (Wellington Bassey is NA1). 7 Likes 1 Share |

Christistruth00:Babafemi Ogundipe was not commissioned in the same year with the trio of Bassey, Ironsi and Ademulegun. You're correct about Bassey being 2 months ahead of Ironsi and Ademulegun In 1949. |

These people are demonic. Why must you always look for ways to paint Ndiigbo black? Why these hate? Right from Yoruba Ronu speech to today. Ndiigbo can't rest for Yorubas. Why was Ojukwu made the Eastern region governor instead of Bassey? It's same reason Fajuyi was made the Western region governor By Ironsi and not his senior Ogundipe. It's about trust and crew. Bassey was not the only one skipped to crown Ojukwu, other Igbos were too. 21 Likes 1 Share |

Christistruth00: What evidence do you have of NCNC and Zik stalling Bassey career other than your distortions ? This was how you formed a shadowy group to stall proceedings in Midwest willink commission hearing while Igbos allowed the minorities have their way in the East by not trying to interfere. You go around believing others are as evil as you can be. 11 Likes 3 Shares |

Igboid: I thought you enjoy when historical discussions are brought up by the likes of the late Nnamdi Kanu and Radio Biafra? But you don't call it hate then? Why are you always angry and bitter when the past is also brought up by others? Why are you so scared of the "Yoruba Ronu" speech that highlighted your greed for power and domination, such that it has deprived you of sleep over the past few days? Ogundipe already had a more senior role in the Supreme HQ behind Ironsi, so it was OK for Fajuyi to take the role of Western Military Governor. So why were the other more senior officers (Both Igbo and non-Igbos) skipped in the appointment for Eastern military governor? 4 Likes |

Christistruth00: I am yet to verify your source, but... Zik was Ojukwu rival and would have said anything to discredit Ojukwu emergence as Eastern region leader. He was entitled to his own opinions and not facts. Appointment of Ojukwu ahead of Igbo and non Igbo military officers cannot be tribalism, because the same pattern was repeated in the West where Fajuyi was appointed the regional governor. 7 Likes |

Christistruth00: Not true. You were not in the mind of minorities to speak for all of them. You only posted Zik opinion, which is a biased one because Ojukwu took his Place as the Eastern region leader. He was looking for ways to get back at Ojukwu. His opinion is noted, but only an opinion of a man with grouse, if he truly made those comments. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Igboid: This thread was opened by someone from the south south who is interested in knowing why the promotion of WU Bassey, a late army officer from calabar was not as rapid as that of his juniors around the same period. If you have a problem with the thread, direct your concerns towards the OP and leave the Yoruba race out of this. Again, please note that Ogundipe was the chief of general staff (Vice President) to Ironsi. He cannot be the number two man and still be the governor of western region. Adebayo that was next to Ogundipe was in London as at the time of the coup and the next person to him was Fajuyi. That explains why Fajuyi was appointed as the governor of the region. 6 Likes 2 Shares |
