This is not a nice idea, he better not think it. It's going to complicate things.
The major issue we are having isn't shortage/scarcity, but increased cost of running business.
Check around, you will noticed that commodities are available in surplus quantity, but the prices are not friendly.
If border is opened, the various checkpoints will increase the cost of commodity too.
See Chrisviboy85 comment below, cost of getting goods to market is sometimes more than the commodity itself

The border closure has achieved no purpose as it were, I was against the closure ab initio. The multiplier effect will be such that since we are unable to attain self sufficiency in food production we'll be at the mercy of the forces of supply. Let the border be open but with stringent regulatory measure that will only allow importation of items for which we are comparatively at disadvantage. Let the govt not fear a backlash, since only God is omniscient. They can start with a commodity at a time.
