The US Secretary of State, Senator Hillary Clinton, in a statement issued on Tuesday night said: “On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I applaud the people of Nigeria for their enthusiastic and orderly participation in the April 16th presidential election.

“This historic event marks a dramatic shift from decades of failed elections and a substantial improvement over the 2007 presidential election.”

The statement, though, noted that the election “was far from perfect”, it said it “represents a positive new beginning for Nigeria”.

The statement also condemned the violent clashes that trailed the election and called on all “candidates, political parties and supporters to respect the results of the election and channel any grievances or challenges peacefully through established, administrative and legal redress”.

While commending the collaboration and dedication to democracy by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, civil societies and any other people in government, the statement said: “They provided a real opportunity for the Nigerian people to select their most senior leaders.”

It also noted that this would position Nigeria to build its democracy through strong governance, transparent institutions and economic development.

The statement however urged INEC “to transparently review and take appropriate and transparent action on all allegations of ‘under-age’ voters, violence and intimidation, ballot stuffing and inordinately high turnout in some areas of the country”.

On the gubernatorial and state Assembly elections coming up next week, the statement said the international community would closely watch the exercise and also called on all Nigerian stakeholders to support a credible and peaceful electoral process

Dictionary defines inordinate as beyond reasonable limit in amount or degree. Our politicians should be more scientific in the rigging methods they decide to use.

They know it was rigged, but don't care. Or at least, not enough to interfere/withdraw their approval of the outcome.

Unfortunate and might seem unfair, but that is life. They have no incentive to stick their neck out.

The statement urged inec to review ilegal acts esperienced in the immediate past election. I believe hilary was trying to advice the inec boss on areas they should tackle in the incoming election saturday.
The election migth not be 100 percent free and fare but it is the most free and farr in our history.
Beside, the only area we have evidence of fraud is the north, underaged kids voted for buhari.Cpc hasnt made any statement about that.

What's misleading? We all know where the inordinate numbers came from, abi where else but the SS and SE registered 98-99% voting and participation?

Even a day old baby fit pick out the bogus wayo involved, this is no rocket science.

Misleading post. And those of you with an agenda and an axe to grind deliberately did not see the highlighted word. Rubbish.
The statement however urged INEC “to transparently review and take appropriate and transparent action on all allegations of ‘under-age’ voters, violence and intimidation, ballot stuffing and inordinately high turnout in some areas of the country”.

In any case; all the major powers have recognized the legitimacy of the newly elected Jonathan Administration. And there is nigh unanimity by both local and international observers that the elections were a marked improvement from previous ones. So all you haters: eat your hearts out.

I dare the US to publicly express concern.

Unrest in the North is one thing but they cant afford for there to be unrest in the oil producing South.

They know what's what and will play their part to ensure GEJ's tenure is trouble free.

Do they have the grounds to interfere?

Why should we want them to interfere?

Why did she use the word SELECT rather than ELECT? Was she trying to pass a message across or am I just reading meaning to that statement?

The U.S have been known to speak with both sides of their mouth. One minute they say this, the next minute something completely opposite depending on where their interest lies. And they intelligently/subliminally say so that they only care about their interest with statements like "in American best interest" and in most cases not necessarily because they really care about justice. That's why they support rebels in Libya and keep mute on the Bahrain crisis and seem confused on Syria and Yemen. Fact is that they do have stakes/interest in the Niger Delta, where they need peace to keep the oil flowing. So in American's best interest, her diplomacy is understandable.
