This is just a plan to loot our public fund and collective wealth. Just palliative that was asked to be shared couldn't go anywhere, so how do they hope to identify the "poorest of the poor" ?
Moreover dishing out money just like that would definitely lead to inflation. 2023 is around the corner and them politicians are seeking means to stake money for campaigns and all.

It's not peculiar to Nigeria. I know we always like to see the worst in ourselves. Socialist interventions are sometimes necessary. Now if u talk about corruption, I believe we have capable agencies to check that. U may see 5k as small but not some others

It's okay for government officials to say whatever they like, but claiming that ordinary Nigerians don't benefit from this current petrol subsidy regime is sheer stupidity. For those who share their sentiment, you will see real sufferings when the subsidy is finally removed.

You cannot inflict suffering on the people because you claim that the borders are porous and petrol importers are cashing out from round tripping. The government has agencies that man those activities. If they are not doing the right thing, heads should roll. Ordinary people should not bear the brunt of government's gross incompetence.

I had initially thought the proposed N5000 fuel price palliative was the most idiotic policy conceived by foolish leaders, but then it occurred to me that whilst it is indeed a most idiotic policy, the leaders who conceived it aren't exactly foolish; they're just shameless desperate thieves.

You're right about something; the N5000 to the so called poor will be a 'legalised' vote buying corrupt scheme for the 2023 elections.

I will be reposting a previous post I made , with links and references , as to why removing subsidy is for our benefit and not for our 'continued poverty'

I am not a supporter of APC, regard Buhari as a failure, especially in 1) failing to diversify the economy, which is part of why we have to remove subsidy...2) security.

I also think that in my opinion, if we want to have more domestic refining of fuel at home, we have to remove subsidies. If we want the 6 refineries coming up, and the two government refineries being repaired to work, subsidy has to go.

In response, I am going to post two links I have previously posted showing why fuel subsidy is bad for the economy. The links are posted for information and education sake, and not posted to a) support Buhari b) abuse anyone c) make fun of anyone d) praise bad governance e) force you to accept my views, or make you accept my views by force.

1. The fuel subsidy dilemma by Simon Kolawole. Excerpt below.

Would you rather buy petrol at the market price — currently about N264/litre — but get quality healthcare and education in return? Or would you prefer to keep buying subsidized petrol — currently at N162/litre — but our public hospitals and schools will remain abysmal? This is the perennial predicament presented to Nigerians for the past three decades since the fierce argument over fuel subsidy began. From the days of Gen Ibrahim Babangida as military president, the subsidy debate, framed in different ways, has always been a source of fiery relationship between the government and the people. It has led to strikes, protests, riots and killings at various points.

I would love to enjoy the best of both worlds, so why should it be an either/or question? I would say I want to buy petrol at N162/litre and, at the same time, get quality education and fantastic healthcare. I want government-owned schools in Nigeria to be as good as state schools in the UK when it comes to modern classroom infrastructure and excellent instruction — and for free. I want government-owned hospitals to have the best of qualified and motivated doctors and other personnel, as well as the most modern of medical equipment, super-adequate hospital beds, and the best of care — topped up with free consultation, free treatment, free surgery and free drugs.

But there are serious problems with my choice because they are based on some outrageous assumptions. One, I am assuming that Nigeria is “rich” and, therefore, has enough money to fund petrol subsidy and still offer excellent healthcare and education to hundreds of millions of its citizens. I am ignoring the fact that the country now services its debts with over 90% of its revenue and is running on empty. Two, I am assuming that it is my birth right to buy cheaper fuel because Nigeria is an oil-rich country. That is why I think I should buy petrol at a price that is lower than what obtains in other countries, even though I bought my car at a price that was not subsidised.

On the other hand, if I argue that I should buy petrol at N264/litre and then begin to enjoy world-class healthcare and education for little or nothing, I am also making many ambitious assumptions. One, I am assuming that the money that would have been saved this year would have been spent by the government (federal and state) to improve social services. From experience, the money is more likely to go into building ultra-modern governor’s lodges and constructing airports than go into improving healthcare and education. Two, I am assuming that the government even has the capacity and the will to manage social services in a way that would be beneficial to the people on the streets.

Yet, the fuel subsidy burden is no longer a joke. According to analysts, the bill would likely hit N2tr by the end of 2021 as crude oil prices keep going up. NNPC says we are consuming 60m litres per day. The higher the crude oil price, the higher the petrol subsidy. We must have spent over N10tr on petrol subsidy in the last 10 years and I cannot say our lives have been bettered by that. Nigeria is practically bankrupt. At this rate, states may go to FAAC meeting one day and come back in tears. All kinds of ailments are surrounding us at the same time: low oil revenues, low FX inflow, high debts and a monumental subsidy bill. In the meantime, economic productivity is hampered by insecurity.

2.Fuel subsidies; they are bad for the economy, but the lifeblood of our politicians. Origianlly posted on The Conversation website. on Nov 4 2021.

(This article is a good one. It goes into the history of fuel subsides, and why they are difficult to remove, and why they are bad for the economy)

Excerpt below

Why are oil subsidies bad economics?
Every year, the Nigerian government runs huge budget deficits that could have been avoided if money budgeted for oil subsidies was allocated to other critical projects.

Subsidies should be used to spur investment in activities that raise the productive capacities of an economy (such as education, health, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure). They should be targeted at strategic sectors of the economy. They should not be used to finance non-durable consumption items like petrol.

Oil subsidies are inequitable, as they transfer the national wealth to those who own several cars and add little or no value to the national economy
.

Again, I understand that not everyone agrees with me, and I apologize in advance for any hurt caused. These posts are posted in the interest of educating people about the bad effects of subsides. They are not government policy, I am not in government, or related to anyone in government, I do not even support APC or PDP.

I am also at heart someone who believes that government should really make sure that fuel costs as low as N20, and subsidise things like rice, beans and other essentials. But to achieve my dream, Nigeria would probably have to earn as much as N50 trillion or more annually for government coffers.

Sure sure black have the lowest IQ in the world and a very short memory. Even the Media is not helping.

This subsidy remover will be the 4th times this administration has removed subsidy.

So what subsidy are they talking about again. Or is it as a result of the inflation.

All of these point to the fact the current dispensation of the arrangements of the country is not working.

Is it not time we restructure? Why should we continue to spend the money we do not have?

I am suspicious of the N5000 thing, and consider it political

However, money transfers to the poorest of the poor are considered a 'good thing' by economists in the wake of a subsidy removal

From a 2014 paper

The results show that while a reduction in the subsidy generally results in an increase in Nigerian GDP, it can have a detrimental impact on household income, and in particular on poor households. Accompanying the subsidy reduction with income transfers aimed at poor households or domestic production of petroleum products can alleviate the negative impacts on household income.

Also from 2007

In the short run, increasing transfers to households would reduce the negative effects of fuel subsidy reform considerably. With proper targeting, poor households could be supported for a limited period, for example, a year. After this period the positive effects from the careful investments suggested above should start yielding fruits. Moreover, as new refineries are built competition in the market will ensure that prices are as low as possible. This was observed in the telecommunications industry where SIM card costs were reduced by more than 90% due to increased competition

So, the government is timing subsidy removal with

1.A proposed fund transfer to poor Nigerians

2.The completion of the Dangote refinery, and the five or so other refinereis coming up (and there are 20 more active licences waiting in the wings).

5000 is not enough, though, and I would have expected that they do some form of cash transfer for car owners for one year...but oil revenues aren't high enough for more to be done. (That's why APC was wrong to have opposed subsidy removal in 2011...back then we had enough oil revenue to pay for all of this, and more.)
