There is no single NATO country on Russia's borders.
Ukraine is not a member of NATO and cannot even qualify to be a member at this point in time so the West has no defense pact with Ukraine but the West will seek to protect any democratic country that is under unjust threat.

Russia is basically acting the way it is because

1.Historically, Russia has been easy to invade because it has a very wide border, and the border is difficult to defend. As a result, it has suffered bad invasions (The Mongols really burnt russia to the ground centuries ago...which is why the Russians reduced mongolia to a nice quiet puppy....)

2.So Russia always actively interferes in its neighbours affairs, to get governments that favour them in office. If that does not work...invasion.The aim is to get a buffer against agressive European and American powers.

3.Ukraine used to be part of the old Russian empire and the old Soviet union. It is also regarded as the birthplace...sorta...of the Russian nation.

4.Ukraine, and other Eastern European nations don't want to be Russia's buffer...so they are signing up with Europe and the US.

5.Russia feels threatened...and as a result, war.

Basically, Russia wants a buffer. They do not want Napoleon, or Hitler...part 2 coming across their border. (The mongols have been reduced to nice puppies, and central asia is a mess. China doesn't want to invade Siberia anyway.

The first is that all these countries have no allies close to the US except cuba. They onky need India , Egypt and France. Now, the rest of the soldiers from NATO are available to easily neutralize them. Then lastly, and the most important point, the US can defeat all these countries by starving them of funding. In case you don't know, sanctions work. That's why Russia despite their landmass being bigger than US, currently have a smaller economy than California and Italy.

You saying Bush or Trump would attack Russia is very funny, it also shows that you know nothing about international politics and you obviously don't want to learn.

I've given you an instance in my first comment about how Trump did nothing when he learnt about the bounty Putin put on any american soldier that is killed by terrorist, Trump never even made mention of it anyday or any time while even being president. It was as if he didn't care, like it was none of his business.

Same with the way he relinquished US base in Syria, despite the US spending billions setting the place up. Trump allowed the Russians step in, remove american flags and mounted theirs.

Trump cares much more about dictators like Putin, Xi, and Kim Jong Un than traditional american allies, that's why he was always at logger heads with Angela Merkel, Malcom Turnbull and Emmanuel Macron.

If you know anything about international politics, you would know that presently, american allies would prefer a democrat over a republican president because they feel they would work better with the democrats.

Trump is now the face of the republican party, and he has set the groundwork for any republican president in the future to be an isolationist president - that is pulling out of NATO and desertion of america allies.

I'm sure you didn't even know that Trump wanted to pull america out of NATO, saying it was obsolete. Who do you think would be the biggest beneficiary if america pulls out of NATO? That would be Russia!

I'm also sure you don't know that NATO helps smaller countries fend off invasion from Russia. And I'm sure you don't even know that Putin wants to recreate the old Soviet Union back, by attacking all old member countries. So if there's no NATO, there would be no protection for these countries.
