Gory 50 crushed to death on Abuja-Okene highway …Robbers order passengers to lie on the road as vehicles run over them From EMMANUEL ADEYEMI, Lokoja Wednesday, August 03, 2011 Photo: The Sun Publishing More Stories on This Section It was a gory site yesterday at the Zariagi end of the Abuja/Okene highway when the residents woke up to behold crushed bodies of over 50 robbery victims. The victims were said to be passengers of an Abuja-bound luxury bus, marked XI 300 ABC, belonging to a popular transport company. They were said to have been waylaid by robbers, who ordered them to lie face down on the highway before they were dispossessed of their belongings. An unsuspecting truck was said to have run over the victims and later escaped the scene of the accident. A similar incident occurred precisely two years ago when a trailer lorry crushed 40 armed robbery victims along Sagamu/Benin highway. The incident, which occurred along Odogbolu-Ijebu axis of the Benin Expressway also left several other passengers severely injured. Kogi State Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Sunday Maku, confirmed yesterday’s tragedy. He said that his men were alerted to the scene by residents of the area. An eye witness said that the luxury bus was coming from Lagos and headed towards Abuja when it ran into the robbers along Zariagi end of the Abuja-Okene highway. The bandits were said to have barricaded part of the highway with a vehicle while their colleagues laid in ambush for oncoming vehicles at the other side of the road. As the ill-fated vehicle ran into the robbers, the eye-witness stated that the hoodlums ordered all the over 50 occupants out of the bus and forced them to lie face down on the road. The robbers later had a field-day dispossessing them of their money and other valuables. It was, however, gathered that another luxury bus coming from Lagos, in company with another truck, was said to have run into the operation and in the process, crushed the passengers, killing them on the spot. Maku disclosed that the mangled remains of the passengers littered the road as other vehicles ran over them. Bones, brains and other parts of the bodies were scattered on the highway. He described the accident as so fatal that his men could only retrieve 14 bodies, consisting 10 male adults, three female adults and a baby. The driver of the bus and a soldier were, however, said to be the only survivors of the accident. Maku urged members of the public to stop travelling at night, saying ‘night journeys are always deadly’. Meanwhile, the bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, while the luxury bus had been impounded by the Police for investigation. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/aug/03/national-03-08-2011-01.html |

I remember the last time something exactly happened and the gory pictures! What a waste! People from the East, West, North and elsewhere are dead and affected because the people have refused to hold their leaders accountable but fight on their race, tribe, quota system and who should take over another part of the country! Too bad, this might not be the last because people have been blinded by corruption and tribalism rather than focus on demanding accountability from leaders at every level. |

So its safe to say that when stopped by robbers on the high-way, run into the nearest bush and keep running (not in a straight line). Cos then u stand a chance of not getting crushed and having your guts smashed out of you. Maybe these armed bandits should always put up a sign that reads "Robbery in Progress, Please Slow Down". Hope this is the last time we hear this kind of news. May their souls rest in peace and may the Robbers never know peace even if they eventually repent. Amen PS: Please No Night Travels people, its not worth it. |

For a minute, I thought this was recycled news. It is unbelievable that this has happened again! 50 human beings dead just like that. 76 died in Norway and the country is still in mourning, In Nigeria, 50 massacred is reported in passing and nothing is done. Gpood luck to those of you that still believe in that failed project called Nigeria |

NOBODY shud blame d govt. For dis misfortune. Our people are often stubborn and careless. Successive regimes have always adviced people to quit night travels citing its disadvantages but instead of heeding to d warnings, they still keepon puttin their lives @ risk. Lets stop traveling @ night. Its dangerous. May d souls of d departed RIP. |

@Valicious, It seems like you didn't get it. There is supposed to be security on the high way, day and night. You'll blame the govt if you realise that some journeys within Nigeria can take up to 20 hours, and as a traveller who doesn't have enough money, how can you put up in a hotel in order to continue the next day? What about vehicles break down along the road? Night journey should be avoided and infact I hate it personally. This is because assistance can't come to the victims on time. But there are some instances that demand night travelling. |
