maasoap:
Your questions are the issue here, doesn't need answers. Bros, I’m aware of the two option that AS couples can procreate. One is IVF, the other is testing the genotype of the foetus And I listed the challenges with testing foetus and aborting if it is SS which are; 1. What if the pregnancy is twins, and one of the foetus is AS/AA and another is SS Or what if the result brings a false AA/AS whereas the child is SS And what if the abortion leads to complications These are reasonable questions to ask and you said I’m ignorant. So can you please explain further how to address this questions. |

I want to hear your experience. I have been dating someone for 5 years now, it happened that I began to see her as someone I would want to spend my life with. Last year we did our genotype test and we were both AS. Now , I know some of you will say this should be the first thing you ask when you meet someone but c’mon, would you say people in university that are dating now, would ask their sef that question? That theory is only feasible when you are single and ready to get married and want to start a new relationship, then you can always ask, but we all know some of our relationships started when we no Dey even see marriage in the nearest future, all of a sudden you just see them as the right person and you take the bold step. Now, I had to meet my family doctor here in Canada, I explained to him my current situation and he referred me to a GENETIC COUNSELOR. I am trying to take the necessary steps cause I am not ready to bring in a child with Sickle cell to this world, and I am not leaving anything to faith. A fone appointment was set with the counselor and we spoke at length. She told me that in every foetus, there is a 25% chance that we can get an SS child. Now , how do we mitigate this percentage to the barest minimum I asked as I am not even ready to bring in a sickler to this world. She gave me three options, I would rather say two because the last involves test when the baby comes, and that is out of the question.
Option 1: A) CVS: They take a sample of the fluid in the womb through her vagina, at 12 weeks to test, if it’s good then fine, if not we have to terminate.
OR
B) At 16 weeks, they take the fluid using a needle directly from her womb, and if it’s SS , they terminate. Both procedures are cover by the government and we don’t need to pay a dime.
Now, she assured me that abortion is a very safe procedure if done properly, and it is even a bigger risk that one can die from a penicillin injection or carrying a pregnancy to term than any harm during an abortion.I know many people would come here and say abortion is this and that but let us be frank to ourselves. If you were told that the child in your womb would have cerebral palsy, or Down syndrome or a neurological disorder, would you still keep that pregnancy? Is there a 100% assurance that two AA people would give birth to a healthy baby? I have come to a realization that pregnancy is just a risk that people take, cus you really don’t know how your child would turn out.
Option 2: PGD. This is just like IVF, where they would select the genotype before they insert back to the womb. She told me the government doesn’t cover this, and it could cost between $10K- $40k. However she mentioned, just like IVf, it is not guaranteed as it can fail and your money is gone.
I discussed this with my girl in Nigeria and she said she was fine with option 1a. I then asked her, that if the first, second are SS would she still remove it. She accepted. I would not lie to you, this girl is everything I want in a woman. I am not just looking at just love because I know love fades with time, but she is a really nice person, and has a good character. She has always been like this from my days in Nigeria because I was with her before I moved outside. Now after finding out our genotype, I tried to get into a relationship with AA. The first one Dey nigeria, she is a nice person, beautiful, but I just didn’t like her or feel attracted to her. She got tire and we just free ourselves, the second one is here in Canada, I just don’t like this one . Please note, I never slept with any of these ladies because I feel it’s not fair.

Funny enough, the AA, SS saga seems to blind us from the other person's flaws. We only see the genotype issue as only obstacle. It was later that I realized that the issue blinded me from seeing some inherent flaws that would have doomed the union. |

Una too like argument. That is the range the OP gave and I don't see what point you are making by changing the OP's story
IVF is expensive but not as expensive as the OP is painting.
Mention one country where the government pays for IVF The point is that you picked the extreme with your statement focusing on 30 million rather than in between. IVF definitely could costs 7-10 million for most people, for those with complications it could cost more. I already pointed out how so what are you still arguing? Learn to farabale, where did I mention govt. pays for IVF? Abi you no know difference between IVF and sickle cell screening? |

It's a tough one.. Trust me I Know cos I've been there.. I'm AS genotyped & I've ended uncountable beautiful relationships cos of it.. I do ask at the very first week of dating.. Best thing is to leave the relationship.. If you can't then please consider this because moving ahead..
There's 25% chances of having a ss baby in every trial.. There's no fixed rule..You may end up having multiple SS issues. Can she keep up with the emotional & physical damage? No matter what the docs say,14 -16wks, that's about 4 months pregnancy termination is no easy feat. She'll curse you as time goes on. I don't know how strong your village people are either. Anyway don't do the invasive CVS.. There's a better way to check that's non invasive and also available here in Nigeria but you still have to wait for about 12wks 1 Like |

What will I gain to see another man being killed? Will it add more to my lifespan?
I stand against abortion totally.

Should've done your due diligence before fully committing to such a relationship.
What have you two been discussing for 5 years if you managed to skip the genotype question? You guys are not serious, and I feel no sympathy for you all. It's best you go your separate ways, and this is coming from someone with an SS sibling who I have seen suffer over the years. Thank God they've made it into their 20s.

Cus I know if they tell any of you that your child would be abnormal, 90% of you will go for the abortion I know a couple that did PGT personally. It didn’t fail (I guess cos no fertility issues) I know two couples (indirectly) that did it, it also didn’t fail. The PGT is generally successful. Just do it in a good place. |

I love your courage and this is what we should be talking about not those talks of not marrying.
So back to the matter, from a medical point of view I would advise you to do selective IVF, the good think about this is, this procedures are available in Nigeria and far cheaper than Canada, meaning you could marry your girl and try the IVF here in Nigeria.
Also the first options are very very possible and you both can exploit it.
In summary, if you see her as a wife you want don't allow genotype dissolve it.
Let me ask this, what if both of you were AA and after marriage she was unable to get pregnant will you not opt for IVF? Most of the people running from the IVF will still end up doing it even if they marry AA. Nigerians have a wrecked mentality towards issues like this. PGT that is being done randomly abroad to check for genetic disorders and choose gender. |
