coogar: Erm Coogar Sorry o! No vex! I see say your blood get temperature! If only you had taken an extra minute to not just read my post, but try to see where I am coming from, then you would notice that I asked a pertinent question, which I will repeat; "WHY UNDER THE BRIDGE?! WHY NOT AJEGUNLE WHERE THERE ARE SHODDY HOUSES THE COST ANYTHING FROM 2000 Naira per month to 5000 Naira per month." I read the very first post (the news article) and that was what I based my questions on because it made the man appear to just laze about since he got fired. And that apart from the 200 Naira with which hie wife started a pure water selling business, he has not brought in any other money. That said, I have these uniformed security guards in my house that earn 11,000 Naira per month (for working a 12 hour shift, so most of them put in 24 hour shifts every now and again just to make ends meet, or have alternate jobs by day). I had a chat with them cos I was curious as to how any Man can raise a family and survive on 11,000 a month. Then I got to understand that they all stay in a particular slum area of Port-Harcourt where they all live in batchers. I asked how much rent cost them and they said the rent ranged from 2000 Naira to 7000 or 10000 per month, depending on the room size, compound layout annd location. I was made to understand that most of the touts, conductors, scavengers, okada riders, e.t.c all live there. They all use communal toilets and bathrooms. Some people had "i pass my neighbor' generators and that some people even have cable TV. Now this is Port-Harcourt, and the area I'm talking about is called "AZUEBIE" near Port-Harcourt Zoo/Slaughter junction. Im certain Lagos has got its own slum areas as well were accomodation isnt fancy, but decent (to a certain degree) and cheap as well. Why under a bridge! Everytime I come into lagos and I'm being driven from the Airport to the island, I pass this place on third mainland bridge where the houses are built on water. How much could rent possibly be in that area?! You are asking if Nigeria has jobs for every citizen and the answer is NO! But if you want a menial job, you can get one! Stop calling me names my dear! You prolly were born with a silver spoon, raised in the GRA's/obod oyibo and all you know about Nigeria is what you read in the papers. When they say that we do not have jobs, we are talking about white collar and blue collared jobs for graduates. Jobs that require a C.V. They are not talking about finding menial labour jobs like driver, conductor, masons, carpenters, brick-layers, plumbers, auto-mechanics, e.t.c. I have a man in my area who works as a cab driver. He would come and hire your car for a day, drive it till he meets his target, wash it and return to you at night just to make ends meet. Step out of your comfort zone and walk amongst the streets and you would understand what they mean by no jobs. Dont be decieved by that world bank and IMF statistic that says 75% are living under 1 dollar a day, because it is truly hard to do that in Nigeria. You will die in less that 6 months on less than 150 naira per day. When I see a truly helpless case, I will more than contribute towards the cause. P.S: Please be civilized and stop with the name calling biko, it dosent make your points any more valid than they are or make you appear more intelligent than you are. Thanks! |

@ okija-juju! pay attention to details! the man works. he goes to refuse dumps, collects iron scraps and sell them. similar to what that vocal slender dude was doing when bbc did a documentary of him. unfortunately, it's not enough to feed his family. yes - this man might have made mistakes years back but that is purely academic now. you should be looking at how he can be helped not passing judgement on his joblessness! for christ's sake, this is why africans keep suffering. we want to know what made someone broke before we help him. white folks on the other hand don't care. if oxfam and the other relief aid organizations ask the same questions you are asking here, africans would have starved to death. i don't care about what this man must have done in the past to bring the present hardship on himself. all i am focused about is to get him out of it. a thousand apologies if you were irked by my previous comment - i was just peeved a well-paid, well-educated and well-travelled man like okija juju would be displaying the same character known to villagers in the heart of the masai province. for bleeps' sake, you should know better! sheeeesh! |
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Radiant(f): 6:36pm On Nov 16, 2011 |
Come on guys! This family needs all the money possible. Moving them into a house isn't the only solution to their problem. That's just one problem out of the way. Odunnu, if you know any family that needs urgent assistance why don't you bring the story to NL? You don't expect people to donate money for something they know nothing about regardless of whether we know people live under the bridge or not. |

We are not yet sure the extent at which ChazB is taking care of this family if it extends to health, business and school matters. |

Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Radiant(f): 11:06pm On Nov 16, 2011 |
I think the best thing is for us to have an account where we can pay in the money. With the latest development, if there are people who are still willing to help this family then they can go ahead and contribute. The only thing is that people might change their mind on the amount they want to give. But whichever way, every little helps. (Tesco ) if we can still send the 300,000 to them it will only better their lives. We shouldn't hold back since people are willing to help. r231, crack on. |
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Freiburger(m): 11:29pm On Nov 16, 2011 |
We 're trying to comfirm to what extent the person who provided them with a home is willing to help, then we can decide on where we can continue from. But one thing is very important we must try and organise a substainable life for this family so that this will not repeat itself again. And besides, the pregnant woman will require immmediate medical attention. we can't just assume someone has provided them with a home so we should forget about the other areas. Let's help this family if we really want to. |
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Natasha2(f): 11:34pm On Nov 16, 2011 |
^and that's exactly why you don't have to wait to know the know the extent the person who provided them with a home is willing to go. He did it without waiting for any contribution, so why waiting for him to tell you the extent he wants to go? You should be able to play your part, not wait for updates from him, procastination is the thief of time. He shouldn't be a barrier , even if he wants to go all the way there's nothing wrong in adding your own kind donation , so what exactly are you guys waiting for? |
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Nobody: 11:58pm On Nov 16, 2011 |
This is awesome news that the family will have an apartment soon! I still think we should help them out more, like with a business, health care, basic neccessities etc. Or if that has already been taken care of, then another family. Why not, with all the planning and interest that has already happened it should not go to waste. Ifyalways and r231, your efforts are admirable. |
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Fhemmmy: 12:37am On Nov 17, 2011 |

Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by Jarus(m): 10:04am On Nov 17, 2011 |
Hi OAM4J et al, What's the situation? Are we going ahead? Is r321 taking up the challenge of receiving the contributions? If not, I can take up the challenge. I can PM my a/c details to OAM4J to PM to all interested to make the contributions into, and alongside another Lagos-based lander, go ahead to donate the contribution, possibly inviting media to cover it. I have little experience in this, having coordinated a 800k campaign funds for Buhari/Bakare Nairalanders earlier this year. |
Re: Man Raises Family Under Lagos Bridge by r231(m): 10:37am On Nov 17, 2011 |
In that case lets start the contribution, . . . . . . If you are in Nigeria, you can send your contribution direct to Jarus. So by show of interest, Let us know which method is better for you and PM will be sent with the account details as I don't think we will be publishing account number on line. Below is the old list, Please confirm by stating INTERESTED with method of payment either through a bank acct in nigeria, paypal or other and if you are in UK, I can provide and acct number to make pmt.
