President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Anthem Bill 2024, which restores the old national anthem "Nigeria, we hail thee".

Godswill Akpabio, Senate President, announced this on Wednesday during a joint session of the National Assembly commemorating the Silver Jubilee of Nigeria's Fourth Republic.

The event coincided with the one anniversary of President Bola Tinubu's government.

Tinubu, who later joined the joint session, confirmed ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’ as the “latest national anthem”.

Akpabio said the sitting was primarily to launch the new national anthem, explaining that the President would not be making a speech because he has to leave to launch the Abuja metro line.

The Senate and the House of Representatives had previously passed the legislation to swap the national anthem from “Arise, O Compatriots” to “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” at separate sittings.

Following the signing of the bill by the President to reintroduce the old national anthem, the joint sitting jettisoned what has been in existence since 1978, to adopt the former (and newly signed) national anthem ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’.

The old anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”, composed when Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960, has replaced the “Arise, O Compatriots” anthem.

Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria during its independence, penned the lyrics for “Nigeria, we hail thee,” while Frances Berda composed the music. The anthem played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s national identity and unity during the 1960s and late 1970s.

What are the lyrics to Nigeria We Hail Thee?

Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood, we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.

My dad is Yoruba

My mum is Igbo

My grandmother was an Urhobo Woman
And my Maternal mother was an Hausa Woman

Technically i am from every nooks and cranies of Nigeria and the progress of this nation is my major concern. Without opposition in politics(LP) there will be no check in the abuse of power in office, so Opposition is a crucial organ of Democracy. But fighting because of ethnic group is completely senseless and prematured.

Y am i saying this ? I know some people will turn this to tribal war. National Athem will soon turn quarrel.

The only place you can see highest number of f00ls congregate is in the National Assembly. A whopping number of 469 f00ls (Senate 109 and HofR 360).

That's why no smart, intelligent debate on the house both in Senate and HofR

Things that matter to Nigerians don't get speedy hearing and passage, except f00lish things.

With this type of f00lishness and number of f00ls, Nigeria is a doomed nation.

This one will be included to Tinubu's 1 year in office achievement and the agbadorians will not allow us hear words...

This man doesn't even know what is doing again.

You said it's lyrics of anthem that would endear Nigerians together and bring unity, when you at the helm of affair his treating them like slaves.

........I'm looking forward to a situation, where 90% of Nigerians won't even know how single national anthem whenever it's being song on national or international stage.

I know what would not work. This is one. The energy used in this would have been enough for each of them to go learn the current anthem.
You can't change an anthem just because you can't recite it. They decided to go back to what they're used to.

Untop of being labeled a failure?

He promised that he would continue the legacies of Buhari. No one expected this level of hardship. He does not buy petrol, kerosene, gas, etc. He lives on tax payers in Aso rock and does not know how it is paying rent. Wage is at 30K, while the cost of food is over the roof.

Of all the anti people policies, they speedily passed the bill on national anthem and he instantly signed it.

The same politicians have deeply divided Nigerians. We all now know that Nigerians are at the brink of another war, with the serious ethnic and religious divisions in the country. Is it not better to unite the people first? This man does not know that he must first tackle hunger and insecurity. What is the job of his team if they cannot tackle such basics that trouble all Nigerians, including the rich?
