Your analogy no follow.

Cows who are always being marched from one point to another take longer to fatten.

The broiler chicken matures for consumption with enough meat between 2,1/2 to 3 months. Its free range counterpart takes anywhere from 6 months to one year and will have less meat.

Ranching is the way to go. They should go and learn newer husbandry methods.

Thank you.

Sir
1-broiler chicken is genetically modified.
2-Free food for 6 months is still cheaper for the farmer than selling the chicken in 3 months and buying expensive chicken feed.
3-Ranching is more comparable to putting local chicken in broilers cages and trying to fatten them.

If USA with all its genetics modification and hybrid produces beef at $7.25
Nigerians will not be able to buy beef if the price doubled to $5.00
All these people online shouting and cursing would complain with more anger.
Ranching is expensive but we all love to eat affordable Suya

GMO cows were approved two years ago. What's wrong with hybrid beef? I dont care if it's a pure bred. Why do you assume the price will double over ranching? It's already assumed the ranchers will be more productive meaning more beef production. Then theirs always the option of allowing more imports to keep prices competitive. When the supply increases the price will drop.

While the bill is in order, there is just one practical step that will naturally send the northern pastoralists packing in less than 2 years.

The government of each state in the middle belt down to south south should acquire lands for ranching in all state constituencies and engage willing farmers and Agricultural graduates. Put them through a refresher course for 6 months and start up the ranch with a number of cattle. The first 2-5 years would be aimed at flooding their states with cheap cattle and meat such that those engaging in the cattle business outside the north will be forced to recall their headers to their region.

Next will be to pass a bill to prohibit Interstate transport of commercial quantities of cattle to prevent re-encroachment when the government's stabilise the prices for revenue. They can also set up processing plants from where they get by products for leather, diary, canned meat, etc.

Meanwhile, indigenous private individuals can be encouraged to set up their own cattle farms by training and provision of capital.

Then go and find another work to do. Learn a skill or something. It is not by force to rear cattle.

The world is an ecosystem.
Some people have to rear the cow
Some people have to plant the food
Some people have to trade the goods
Some people have to work in the offices
But we all have to learn to live together peacefully.

Lol, Ganduje is a politician...believe him at your risk.
Reason why cattle herders move southwards is because grass doesn't grow in the north during dry season
Ganduje was just looking for a way to milk the government treasury. If you had financed him to set up a ranch he will have pocketed billions of dollars.
Then you can think of ways to force grass to grow in the North during the dry season. With the trillions pilfered from government coffers by your elites/ cow owners and generated from the criminal business of kidnapping and terrorism perpetrated by your people, you can set up irrigation for grass farming in vast areas of land in the North. That will solve the problem of having to migrate so as to go and cause wanton destruction of lives and properties in the South. If you people don't stop this madness, very soon Fulanis will be an endangered ethnic group in Nigeria. That is guaranteed. Buhari is no longer in charge.

My distinguished colleagues, now is the time to bring about a law to stop open grazing. It is old fashioned, hazardous, burdensome and must be discarded.
Add:
...and least profitable
...and most dehumanising of the Fulani herdsmen.

Daydreaming of the day Fulani cattle rearers kill off
or silence most southerners and plant Islamic religion in the heads of survivors is a pipe dream.

Our local breeds are more disease resistant
If you use $100 to produce $150 of beef
Compared to using $20 to produce $120 of beef and selling cheaper beef to Nigerians.
Which is better ?

Theoretical solution, nice try. But these governors cant even pay minimum wage !!!

Because they choose to misappropriated funds not the non-availability. While doing my postgraduate studies here in the UK. I had a schoolmate whose father was a Governor of a Northwestern state back home in Nigeria, living large paying about N5M every month as rent for his apartment, drove a top range car which he didn't even need because his apartment was a walking distance to campus and if you were in his circle of friends back then in school, you don hammer because you wouldn't stress yourself hustling part time jobs like other international students because the Governor's son was a spender and easily gave money to his guys, for being around him......so you can imagine how the other children of the Governor will balling wherever they are.

Kogi state struggled to pay minimum wage but we saw the figures, Yahaya bello misappropriated.

Raise your cattle in the North, transport and sell nationwide, they have no business in people's farms.

Why do they always override the southern senators as though they are their slaves.

The North's only strategy is to fume over matters and as usual the weaklings from the south will surrender .
If you read the post carefully, you would see that the bill was passed anyways. Fuming or no fuming. This is not Buhari's administration.

The same way you come from the southeast and open a pharmacy or spare parts shop in Kaduna/kano/katsina and ply your trade and take the profits back to east safely.

spare parts seller and pharmacist didn't pay for their shop? Abi herder are paying for the plant they destroy?

These are the problems in the way of ranching that nobody is willing to talk about. This is why government has to step into this "private business", which has become a national security issue.

Yes, open grazing has to go since it has become a vehicle for crime. But government has to put on its thinking cap if a solution is to be found.

There are other less expensive sources of animal protein out there. It's not by force to eat beef.

They don't open their pharmacy or spare part shops by killing the land lords or refusing to pay rentals. They don't kill other people doing their businesses nor destroy other people's means of livelihood. The don't open shops as cover to commit heinous crimes against their hosts. They don't kidnap or rape people in their shops. They harmlessly provide goods and services. Your comparison even reeks of intellectual laziness. Times have changed. It is foolish for an ethnic group to stay fastened on an "only trade". There are other trades that can be learned.

On a serious note misappropriation is a national pandemic in Nigeria.
However being wealthy is not a crime, we should differentiate the two.
I am Nigerian and i don't have any cattle. The forum is brainstorming for viable solutions not a forum for ethnic vilification or where poverty is publicized or celebrated.

The Fulani herdsmen have money, they are amongst the wealthiest people in this country but I wonder why they are so wicked and stingy to themselves ? Why do they want free access to other people's lands instead of doing the sane thing done worldwide which is buying or leasing of lands ? Very wicked people who just love crisis every time. Tufiakwa

They are bent on sticking on the primitive ways. Open grazing that they would destroy other people's farms and even kill them

The matter no hard. Let the northern states governors establish ranches /grazing fields in each states if the cattle herders cannot afford to buy or lease lands.

Ranching is akin to removal of beef subsidy.
Protein malnutrition will rise among the vulnerable population.
We can try restructured designated grazing areas away from farm lands

Potential Impact on Beef Prices
Implementing large-scale ranching could significantly increase the cost of beef due to the high expenses associated with establishing and maintaining ranches. These would make Nigerian cows too expensive for purchase as cows from Niger and other neighboring countries practicing open grazing will be cheaper in the open market.

Suggested Practical Solutions
Designated Grazing Areas: Allocate specific areas for grazing to prevent clashes while allowing pastoralists to continue traditional herding methods.
Conflict Resolution Mechanisms: Establish local committees to mediate disputes between farmers and herders, promoting peaceful coexistence.
Cooperative Farming: Encourage farmers and herders to form cooperatives, sharing resources and knowledge to improve productivity and harmony.
Community-Based Animal Health Services: Provide mobile veterinary services to support herders, reducing the need for long migrations and potential conflicts.
These solutions aim to be cost-effective and fair to both cattle herders and farmers, ensuring sustainable practices and reducing conflicts.

The Southeast is allowed to ply their trade and open spare parts shop in katsina
The Southwest is holding Aso-rock Office in Abuja
The South-south is FCT Minister in Abuja
Why cant the northern Fulani man feed his cow in the south ?
Lets be tolerant and restructure cattle grazing to accommodate everybody.

When Obasanjo said: "who will give you his land" (for RUGA, Ranch, etc), he did not mince words.
All over the free world, people in cattle breeding buy their farm, fence it, buy straw to feed their cattle, use artificial insemination to impregnate their cow, milk the cow every morning and every evening, milk collected every morning to milk depots where dairy products are made, and cattle for beef are taken to designated abattoirs for slaughter.

Embrace modernity. Hiding under cattle to export a religion is an outdated formula.

Cows graze in brazil
.
Brazil is the world largest producer of beef for a reason.
Even Nigerian human beings grazing with their 2 feet, cannot afford to feed themselves 3 square meals due to inflationary government policies, you now want to tie a cow down.
Ranching is feasible but its very expensive.

Interesting submission about the bolded.
Please kindly show a pix and video of cows grazing with their herdsmen walking along the roads and farms of Brazilians from one State to another, from one farmers farmland to another. Eating farmers crops and destroying their farmlands.

Your analysis of comparison between a human being and a cow is applauding. I guess only persons from one part of the country can talk that put up such.
