The first ever Aviation Brigade in the Nigerian Army is taking shape with the delivery of the first pair of UH-1 Huey helicopters from the United States. Bringing with it new structure, new doctrine and brand new way of fighting.

Combining the airlift and CAS capabilities of the UH-1 Huey together with the attack firepower of the incoming Cayuse Warrior helicopters, the Nigerian army will be able to mount air assault operations using the firepower and mobility of these helicopters.
the air unit is commendable and relieves the airforce a bit, but huey is vietnam war era chopper.....

Budget in billions to buy this?
Why are we so wicked in this country?
All the huge budget for security should be channelled into productive economy instead of this joke that the inflated security budget can buy

What a log of garbage. The Huey that the US used in Vietnam is what our army depends on as cutting edge close air support tech? The huey? This platform that was developed in the early 1950s before Nigeria got independence?

In contested airspace where bandits across the North have access to weapon systems that bring down fast moving fighter jets, a huey that its maximum speed is 127mph is just a flying coffin. Who the hell thought this was a good idea?

The US is about to retire several hundred of its A-10 warthogs. That's about the most capable close air support platform around. Since the US is now willing to sell weapon platforms to Nigeria, they might consider selling some A-10s to us. Even though that's a tall order.

True. The Huay was the work horse of US army in the Vietnam War. E too suffer for their hand.

But it also shows reliability and mass production, Nigeria going for this modern retrofit shows its cheaper and maybe we can buy in bulk.
The A10 warthog on the other hand might be expensive, even if it's cheap to purchase it might be expensive maintaining operational cost on the long run, there's a reason the US army is retiring it (cost). Instead I'll opt for more turboprop Tucano planes, cheaper, lighter and does the work effectively too.

The Huay with modern avionics isn't bad either might be cheaper to purchase and maintain, got tons of spear parts, can be used for different mission roles, surveillance, light attack, tracking of bandits, extradition, troops transport..like the US army was able to adapt it to the Vietnamese dense jungle, we can also use it in our vast northern landscape.

Imaging a scenario where army can easy go after bandit after attacking a town or kidnapping people in large numbers. A huey armed with a good rocket pod, 12mm machine gun or a gratling will bring hell while some transport troops to be dropped for the round up.

Nothing is indestructible. Buy warthog and lucky shot might bring it down. No weapon system is an absolute silver bullet.

The huey is not a bad purchase itself the only problem is if they fail to purchase it in large numbers. Buying this, I believe the army will be ordering hundreds of them fitted with modern avionics and good weapon systems (rocket pod, heavy machine door gunner, gratling gun, some guided missile system)

Bandits with RPG, high calibre rifles or mounted guns can easily bring this helicopter down and the crash is always fatal (Google this). It's going to be a case of penny wide, pound foolish.

I can tell you for a fact that the government will not even buy up to 20, this is just an avenue to siphon cash.

The United States Air Force deployed its Iroquois to Vietnam, using them to conduct reconnaissance operations, psychological warfare, and other support roles. Other nations' armed air services, such as the Royal Australian Air Force, also dispatched their own Iroquois to Vietnam. In total, around 7,000 Iroquois were deployed in the Vietnam theatre, over 3,300 of which were believed to be destroyed. Almost half was destroyed. Non will survive with the rates of advanced guns available to the bandits And religion of peace ✌️ fighters

The Iroquois was originally designated HU-1, hence the Huey nickname, which has remained in common use, despite the official redesignation to UH-1 in 1962.[1] Various derivatives and developments of the Iroquois were produced. A dedicated attack helicopter, the Bell AH-1 Cobra, was derived from the UH-1, and retained a high degree of commonality. The Bell 204 and 205 are Iroquois versions developed for the civilian market. In response to demands from some customers, a twin-engined model, the UH-1N Twin Huey, was also developed during the late 1960s; a further updated four rotor model entered service in Canada but not the US, the Bell 412. A further updated UH-1 with twin engines and four-bladed derivative, the Bell UH-1Y Venom, was also developed during the early twenty-first century for the USMC. In US Army service, the Iroquois was gradually phased out following the introduction of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk and the Eurocopter UH-72 Lakota in the early 21st century. However, hundreds were still in use more than 50 years following the type's introduction. In excess of 16,000 Iroquois have been built since 1960.[2] With new orders from Japan and Czech Republic, the UH-1 remains in production. Several export customers, such as Canada, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, and Italy, opted to produced the type under license. Operators have been located across the world, including the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific region.

Well, cost might have been a factor. Besides, they're not getting only Hueys. I see Cayuse warriors, and they're just starting. Not a bad idea if they Hueys are going to be a small part of the mix.

Its a good move.
First baby steps for army aviation in Nigeria. WIll enable us to take bandit camps unawares in even the most in accessible locations.
I would have preferred Mil Mi-17s, but i see there is a political decision in the Nigerian defence circles to go West especially for air power. First expensive super Tucanos, now these which i am sure will wind up more expensive than Mil Mi17s.

But anyway, half bread is better than -----.
