But I feel like even if it were remotely true, it’s not reputation damaging to need help once in a while. No one has it all. I don’t know what they hoped to achieve by sharing that. If someone occasionally needs help, does that make them a bad person?

It is about the fact that they get their jollies kicking a person who is down. And most of these people when/if you meet them in real life are truly wretched. Maybe that is where the malice comes from. If something terrible happened to you and someone opened a thread to announce it, they would pile on. There are a lot of seriously disturbed and bitter people on SM.
