Pennsylvania, Louisiana and some other states of the Union practice closed voting. The opposition can weaponize this during the primaries to vote against candidates that are most threatening to their own man. This was why Nikki Haley, an unpopular candidate in the Republican Party was having so much votes when she was contesting against Trump. It was basically Democrats that were voting her.
