Who created those entry barriers?, what is stopping others from setting up local refineries? I don't support monopolies, they create price distortions; they do not improve services. Infact all they do is jack up their prices. That is the single reason why prices of utilities and essentials are skyrocketing because of monopolies and Cartels who just jack up prices anytime they want because of lack of competition.

Why is his cement so expensive in Nigeria compared to other African countries.?

The setting up of the refinery though commendable has not addressed the nation's fuel supply challenges. There is no reason why over 300 billion people should be held hostage by a single supplier of petroleum product, no rational government will accept that. It is a security risk.

There must be room for competition from other players even if they are small players.
Re: Akinwumi Adesina Says This Dangote Issue Is Shocking - Otedola by Lavor234: 2:22pm On Jul 23
What exactly is the hulaboo about?

Is his fuel cheaper than the ones imported, if it is not, he has to make it cheaper.

Does he want us to stop importation of fuel and buy his fuel at the rate of 400?
We go rush am.

How much is he prepared to sell his fuel to us?
Or this he want to sell at 1 500 and stop anyone else form importing at 700?

When he was building the refirnery, did he not weigh the pros and cons, producin should here means cheaper fuel so why should I be buying expensive fuel because it is produced by Dangote?

It's like Innoson producing inferior gas guzzling cars and forcing us not to buy Toyota cars

What exactly does Dangote want?

Of course, since u dnt see beyond Nigeria and ur perspective is grossly bias and myopic.
I will indulge you to study, 2 most advanced economies and how they are supporting their own citizens, to fix personal business, which they know,it would be a beneficiary to the country in the long run.

Check below and see what President Bush did for "General motors" during his time, and create time for urself to read several stimulus packages that Bush predecessor, Obama did after Bush left office.

No bias my friend. Bush bailed out GM and chyrsler . You are comparing apples and oranges.
GM and Chrysler are not personal businesses. They are businesses owned by Americans in the public sector. There is no single owner to GM and Chrysler, who owns 90% of GM or chrysler.President Bush DID NOT BAIL OUT ANY PRIVATE BUSINESS OWNER. Dangote refinery is a private business owner. He owns over 90%.

I took my time to explain monopoly to you, hoping you would comprehend, i have attached diagrams to help, when you own 60-70% market share in a company it is called monopoly all over the world. There are laws against these in USA, and other countries, they prevent even big companies from from buying each other not to control the market. Dangote controls the cement market in Nigeria 100%. The remaining business cannot compete with him due to his large market share.
I disagree. You can't be said to be operating under a monopoly by having the largest share of the market, in which there are other players and a level playing field. Don't misconstrue market share as monopoly. They're 2 different things. For instance,Indomie has the largest share of the noodles market in nigeria so, can you say the market is being monopolised when the likes of mimi and honey well are there and still producing? In a literal term, a monopoly exists where there's no competition.

Go and read, Jetblue in USA wanted to buy Spirit Airlines also operating in USA. the government stepped in and blocked the sales. Jetblue was ready to pay $3.8 billion cash. Spirit had agreed.

WHY ?

It was deemed the new market share will constitute a monopoly to other airlines, like UNITED,AMERICAN,DELTA.

I couldn't make sense of most of your response, but i will present you evidence that the highlighted portion is not true. See attached group of refineries in the USA who are foreigners associated with the USA company. USA encourages open market, there are rules and safety measures but there is an open market. Because open market fosters genuine growth.

Now do us a favour and list the competition for Dangote Refinery in Nigeria.

The secrecy surrounding subsidy payment is a pointer to why Dangote Refinery is being gradually frustrated out of operation. Nigeria is not in short supply of paid pens who justify every atrocities by every regime since 1960. Ever wonder why the country is stuck on a treadmill of motion without movement?

I am sure that you have never read the fine prints of open market economy. It did more harm than good to developing nations especially the ones in the 3rd World category.

The competition should be among PH, Kaduna, Warri and Dangote refineries. Importers who line their pockets with subsidy scam funds are not healthy competitors.

Why dont you list the competitors ? I have stated my facts. Calling everyone a "paid pen" is getting old. The docile Nigerians that were taken advantage of for 50years are different from the ones today, There is a Nigerian born politician in every government in the world today. We dont care whose Ox is gored. We will raise an alarm to sharp practices and businesses that do not come to the table with fairness and equity.

Your type, we know. Sit down all day and side a person who will pocket 90% of the profit from selling diesel and petrol to Nigeria. If one person pockets 90% of the profit only to sell it to us at market prices as he sells cement to us. While majority of Nigerians are in Abject poverty.
Our eye don open, Either we all enjoy our crude oil together or Dangote too will not see $1.

So you suggest that subsidy should be removed completely for Dangote to function?
So we can buy fuel 2000.
We want to buy cheap fuel and that is why we have been clamouring for working refineries,
But if costs anything higher than what we are buying. I say let it burn

Those who want to go into mini production aren't protected. Dangote must be protected by all means.

Those people at NNPC and their subsidiaries are the brain why all our refinaries refused to refine one drop of petrol

If anyone is wondering why our refineries has not been working despite of the billions spent on them, here it is.
There are people with narrow personal interests everywhere, in power, petroleum, banking and finance, everywhere.
These structures must be demolished for Nigeria to move forward.
The people clamoring for subsidy have no idea how it was not it their interest.

You tried but dangote isn't operating in a monopolistic market. Bua group, Ibeto, Lafarge/WAPCO are still in active operation in same market. Dangote only has a edge over them because he has the financial muscle as an individual to operate. He also has cement plants outside Nigeria esrning him stable fx,hope you know.

On the oil and gas investment, before Dangote came we had 4 solid refineries which they rendered moribund due to corruption in the system. Only nnpc was importing petrol, the Monopoly which Dangote refinery has now broken. Rather, nnpc was the one operating as a Monopoly in the oil and gas market, not dangote who came just yesterday.

Bua group is also coming up with their refineries. It would soon be completed. We have modular ones too which have been in operation before dangote came. If you have the capacity today, you too can build one. Dangote had reiterated that he enjoyed no benefit from the FG. The money they contributed was a loan, which hes been paying back already. He also said he paid 100m usd for the land he built the refinery on.

So, in this case, Monopoly is out of place.

Just ignore the quack.

Why should even the fear of monopoly be more important than the fear of killing a refinery that would contribute to Nigeria's higher productivity, employment and economic development, but resorting back to the dark ages of fuel importation?

How can a normal person match fuel IMPORTATION to fuel PRODUCTION, as a way of checkmating monopoly, instead of production to production?

And for the high price of cement being referred to, Nigeria is still far better, as a manufacture and net exporter of Cement.

Economic development is not about cheaper prices, but higher local productivity!

Akinwunmi Adesina,

Your passionate defense of Dangote’s monopolistic tendencies is misplaced and ultimately detrimental to Nigeria's long-term economic health. Let’s be clear: the open free market should determine winners and losers, not subjugation or forced patronage.

Monopoly and Market Distortion

You have been told to educate yourself on subjects you don't understand and stop wailing shouting monopoly everytime. Your family get 20 billion dollars to invest in refinery? Baabu sense.

Monopoly often exists where there are high barriers to entry or high capital costs.

How many individuals or companies can do railways? How many can do refineries of the scale of Dangote Refineries?

In a nation that has been importing refined petroleum products for several decades, the abnormal simply became very normal.

No smart investor would make a $19.5 billion investment and want it to be undermined by importers.

What do we expect from otedola,a partner in crime. Dangote should compete with importer and sell his fuel at lower price since he is not paying import duties and other taxes.
If his product is cheaper, importation will automatically stop

There is no monopoly in cement bro.

Monopoly means one producer supply the entire market and in Nigeria we have more than 6 brand and various suppliers of cement. Only that dangote has the greater market share.

Why hasn't the others try to bring price down?

Even though we said the way he dominated the market is bad... Must we continue to import fuel?
Must we continue to face this suffering?

If dangote could get this product and bring the price a little down we go like am like that

It sounds weird. The masses are beginning to see their real enemies, the reason our able youths are running away and leaving opportunities behind. The rogues are the cause and I hope they wouldn't begin looking for them one after the other soon. Nigeria can't work with them still holding sway.
