In as much I wouldn't like one business effort to be bastardized,we need to know that most of business Dangote is doing has been monopolized by him, like cement, sugar,so that at the end of the day,the whole country will be at his mercy.
Thos big men talking in supporting his refinery will be beneficial but it is the common man of the country that will suffer it
Nigerians should not allow our black gold to be monopolise by anybody not even the government.

So you suggest that subsidy should be removed completely for Dangote to function?
So we can buy fuel 2000.
We want to buy cheap fuel and that is why we have been clamouring for working refineries,
But if costs anything higher than what we are buying. I say let it burn
Who told you the fuel won't be cheaper

Stop telling lies. This is beginning to sound more like hate. Cement imports was banned in 2004 by OBJ so how did Dangote get 50 years concession?
Can you explain how NNPC's present model makes the market competitive? Does it make sense to ask Dangote to compete against govt? Or are you unaware that NNPCL is 100% govt owned.
You're uncomfortable with Dangote's monopoly but sign up for NNPC's monopoly
How does that make sense

How is Dangote better than the government. By already inflating the cost of building his refinery ? No refinery on earth or in Mars cost 20 billion dollars.
We are complaining of inflated procurement and we want to hand it over to someone who inflated the cost of building his refinery......dey play.

Dear Malali,

Defending NNPC on this issue is totally illogical, Have you asked yourself why NNPC deliberately refused to fix all four(4) refineries and are very comfortable importing fuel? For decades no individual or group of people ever thought of setting up a refinery but Dangote took up the challenge to set one up now you are all crying of monopoly, should we keep wasting tax payers money on fuel import? What about forex?

Dangote never said he want to be the only player in the energy sector, others can come in if they have the financial muscle, now that is competition. Infact, Dangote offered to sell his refinery to NNPC.

It is no brainier that the Cabals eating fat on oil imports and who have sworn never to let our refineries work are behind this nonesense.

Why refuse selling crude oil to someone that can produce fuel and sell cheaper but comfortable selling crude oil to importers who will import expensive fuel? Is there any logic in that?

Please stop defending absolute nonsense.

Thank you

I am not in favor of NNPC, you are getting me wrong. But Dangote from his previous business antecedents is no saint either. Once he has succeeded in hijacking and controlling the dominant diesel and petrol stake we will be at his mercy. No mater the concessions the government gives him, he will sell for maximum profit. Look at the free stuff he gets for cement manufacturing, limestone, government waivers, tax concessions. We still buy cement at expensive prices. Dangote is fighting NNPC because he wants to "eat" that potential subsidy money alone,as profits. We are stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.
And by the way, that refinery didn't not cost 20 billion dollars. He has inflated the price already. The largest refinery in the world cost not more than 10 billion dollars.

You shouldn't worry about him, he is not the only one in the cement industry, btw, BUA is also building a refinery, others can come in. It is all about financial power play...we should focus on bringing in investors that will give him a run for his money like they did by kicking him out of the tomato paste business... period.

Akinwunmi Adesina,

Your passionate defense of Dangote’s monopolistic tendencies is misplaced and ultimately detrimental to Nigeria's long-term economic health. Let’s be clear: the open free market should determine winners and losers, not subjugation or forced patronage.

Monopoly and Market Distortion

You argue that monopoly exists due to high barriers to entry or high capital costs. While this may hold some truth, it does not justify the creation or maintenance of monopolies, especially not through governmental favoritism. Dangote has benefitted immensely from the Nigerian state: free limestone, free land for cement factories, some of the cheapest non-unionized labor in the world, unlimited tax concessions, and numerous import waivers. Despite these advantages, what has been the result? The cement business remains a monopolistic cartel. Do Nigerians enjoy cheap cement today? The answer is a resounding no. Dangote was one of the first to hike cement prices, exercising his market dominance at the expense of Nigerian consumers.

Dangote Refineries and Energy Sector Monopoly

Now, you suggest we should hand over the energy sector, crucial for 300 million people, to a single man. This is both dangerous and short-sighted. Dangote’s decision to build a $19.5 billion refinery was his own business choice, and with any business venture comes inherent risks. He should have anticipated the possibility of buying crude at market rates and selling refined products in an open market. Expecting the NNPC to capitulate to his demands reeks of entitlement and undermines the very principles of fair competition and market dynamics.

Misplaced Sympathy and Entitlement

Your attempt to elicit sympathy by emphasizing Dangote’s massive investment ignores the fundamental fact that he should have considered market contingencies. Dangote should compete on equal footing with other businesses, not seek special treatment. Throwing a tantrum and trying to manipulate crude sales and petrol procurement from the NNPC signals a disturbing sense of entitlement.

Economic Independence and Fair Competition

Nigeria’s energy sector, like any other, must remain open to fair competition. Your call for protectionist measures to favor Dangote is a call to undermine the very fabric of a free market economy. The energy sector should be driven by innovation, efficiency, and competition, not by monopolistic practices.

A Call for Economic Justice

The days of allowing a few individuals to dominate critical sectors of our economy must end. We have seen what happens when monopolies are allowed to flourish – prices soar, quality suffers, and innovation stagnates. It’s time for Nigeria to embrace a truly competitive market, where every player has an equal opportunity to succeed.

Adesina, you call for support and protection of local industries, but true support lies in fostering a competitive environment where no single entity can dictate terms. We must not surrender our economic future to a few individuals. The Nigerian people deserve better – they deserve fair competition, better prices, and improved quality of goods and services.

Nigeria's economic landscape should be determined by open competition and market forces, not by entitlements and monopolistic control. It’s time for a new era of economic justice and fairness, where the interests of the many are prioritized over the privileges of the few.

Sincerely,
Malali.

The Jamnagar refinery is a private-sector crude oil refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. Reliance Industries owns it. The refinery now has a capability of 1,240,000 barrels per day, making it the largest refinery in the world.

Twice the capacity of of Dangote refinery. It can be built for 6 billion dollars.

This is another brilliant submission by you sir/ma. I surely enjoy reading this but I disagree with some fact but I'll state just one for now due to time constraints...Dangote or any investor cannot compete with importers..
Nobody can compete with importers and 'importing' is actually not a biz, it's abnormal like Adesina said but we have made it normal...
Dangote refinery can compete with OTHER REFINERY!! Dangote cement is competing with BUA and others..
To be honest, leaving our oil supply to the hand of just one man is also scary but I believe reason, and I mean reasonably reason can prevail..There must be a way this thing can be done..We can have a win-win...
If you're producing/manufacturing anything in this country and you allow people to import same thing from abroad, that you plant will die, naturally.
What are the advantage of Dangote refinery to our economy on the long run? Do you know the forex we will save? Do you know how much we are loosing to all this importation?
I respect your view!

Dapo,
I also see your views and i understand your concerns. I know Dangote cannot compete with importers. But do you know that the USA imports petrol despite having at least 130 fully functioning refineries. I am telling you here, even if Dangote refinery is fully functional we will continue to import Petrol. Energy is the real currency in the world. Do you know that when Russia started cornering the whole European market, they drew the ire of the USA. Its is not right to give Dangote the whole energy of the country. Nigeria owes OPEC the agreed quota 1.5 million barrels thereabout. After that there are other smaller refineries already getting crude before Dangote came into the picture. So just coming in and demanding crude on day one, we will have to give him from someone else's quota. Who will sacrifice their quota for him ? The oil market is not like like limestone for cement. Saudi produces 11 million barrel per day. If Saudi misses this quota by 1 barrel and produce only 10 million barrels. It will immediately raises prices all over the world.
The truth of the matter is, crude oil is gold. Its the most important commodity in the world. The whole country feeds on Crude oil. (salaries, pensions, infrastructures, government funding). We do not even produce enough to satisfy OPEC, Local refiners and Dangote.
Questions you should ask yourself is
1- Why doesn't Dangote ignore them and buy his crude in the open market ?
2-Why doesn't Dangote sell his products to the open market ?
3-Why is he tackling the government that they must sell or buy from him ?

Petroleum is the crown jewel of petrodollar states. Just because dangote built a humongous refinery doesnt mean we will hand him the keys to Nigeria's sole means of National income.

Stop with the misguided lies. US imports fuel as reserve. US is energy independent. The reserve is for emergencies and contingency situation and not to supply the the energy market.
Nigeria does not owe OPEC. OPEC is not a bank. It is more of an interest group. Nigeria can choose to pull out any time and sell its oil indpendently. Several nations have done that in times past.
Dangote has been buying crude from open market. But may I ask how it makes sense to any manufacturer to source locally available raw material from above. It is simple economics. Your question is like me asking why you buy garri from the market closest to you and not from a village in Benin.
Dangote has been selling his products to the open market and even exporting. Is that not what we have prayed and cried for all these years? How come when it is a reality now we suddenly have a problem with the person doing it? It seems Africans are too jaundiced about everything to solve any problem in this life. It's like witchcraft.
He is not tackling govt to buy or sell from him. What he is aasking govt to do is what a lot of people have been saying and even govt have been mouthing. What is deregulation of the downstream sector? What does it imply? How does it look like? That will answer your misguided question.
I'm happy I saw you on the Otedola thread. You can see American companies he mentioned who get govt patronage on a steady just like I told you so quit the bullshit. The govt should stop stifling Dangote. They can call him to the table and get some concessions but certainly not kill the refinery.

The solution to all these fuel issues and the cabal is very simple yet being deliberately overlooked by the politicians cos of selfish interests as well.....

Just transform the NNPC into a Public Private Partnership (PPP) joint venture and making this investment open to those who have funds to play with and you'll see an entirely different Oil sector.
