The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, announced on Thursday that President Bola Tinubu has approved a 20% pension increase for Armed Forces personnel.

This statement was made at the 2024 Accounts and Budget Seminar themed “Optimising Nigerian Navy Non-Public Fund Opportunities In A Dynamic Economic Environment: The Nigerian Navy Personnel In Focus.”

Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Naval Headquarters, Rear Adm. Joseph Akpan, Ogalla addressed the two-day event, held from July 25 to July 26 at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Ogalla praised President Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of both serving and retired Armed Forces personnel. He mentioned that the pension increase took effect in January and is part of various initiatives to boost morale and efficiency.

“This seminar is timely as we explore strategies to generate funds independently from budgetary allocations to address welfare needs and enhance living standards for personnel,” Ogalla stated.

“Such initiatives are crucial for operational efficiency, as the human factor is key to the success of any organization, including the Nigerian Navy.”

He emphasized the importance of optimizing non-public funds to improve personnel welfare, which in turn helps retain skilled personnel and enhance operational effectiveness.

Ogalla highlighted several schemes the Nigerian Navy operates to support its personnel, including navy insurance, car refurbishing loans, and welfare loan schemes, managed by the Directorate of Non-Public Funds.

“These schemes are vital for protecting our maritime environment, essential for the nation’s economic prosperity, a responsibility entrusted to the Nigerian Navy,” Ogalla said. He stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and continuous evaluation in managing these schemes to meet personnel needs.

“I am pleased that this seminar includes lectures designed to elucidate these factors and develop innovations to utilize non-public funds for personnel welfare. Discussions on packages like mortgages could contribute to a more resilient and capable naval force,”
he added.

Ogalla urged attendees to use the seminar to brainstorm on critical policy issues related to non-public fund opportunities to improve operational efficiency and personnel welfare.

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his guidance and unwavering support to the service, particularly for enhancing welfare packages for the Armed Forces. “We remain committed to carrying out our statutory mandate for economic prosperity and poverty eradication in line with your renewed hope for Nigeria,” Ogalla concluded.

A good one by the President regardless of the motives behind it at this time.

We can all see that even the Military is benefiting from the threat of a mass peaceful protests against bad leadership.

When the people are united in holding governments at all levels to account, the people benefit from better policies.

On this specific matter, the president should go further by establishing a special insurance fund to ensure that the families of security personnel killed on active duty are paid monies that can cater for thier loss.

Or ensure that a maximum of 3 children below the age of 18 are either trained to tertiary level or given vocational skills training of thier choice.

Finally, some good news for our veterans!

This is a step in the right direction. Those who have served deserve to be taken care of, and this increase shows that their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Let's hope this trend continues, as it’s high time we prioritize our heroes.

Kudos to Tinubu for recognizing the need!

The last time military pensioners got this kind of favour was during Jonathan's era. Despite all the efforts and protests organized by military pensioners, Buhari did not increase their pension. We all thought Buhari, being one of them, will quickly attend to their plea, but the Baba no do anything for good 8 years. Kudos to Tinubu for this one. 🫡👍

Igbos: We are one of the highest contributors in Nigeria economy. Summarily: We even build in our land and other people's land, but how many non-indigenes build in our land? We invest in other people's land, but how many non-indigenes invest in our land?
Please don't talk against Igbos on protest, do they look like people interested in protest?

Avoiding protest by all means… this is the meaning of this news. Will Nigerians be bribed with instant gratification just like they did to their dead grandparents or will they come out and protest for the future of their kids because death can be delayed but is still inevitable ?

Websites pushing anti-protest agenda shows you that if Nigeria gets better toxic sites will cease to exist because the economy will thrive and better alternatives will spawn because an empowered society creates true freedom.

The world is watching.

All of these increments here and there will further drive up inflation.

Why not focus on tackling the key things affecting the larger percentage of the population, things like cost of power, availability of electricity, refine your crude so you drive down cost of fuels, run an efficient government, build up institutions to global standards so as to reduce pressure on our FX, etc. All of these things will normalize cost of living and doing business which will ultimately reduce the need for all these palliatives and incentives which are largely unsustainable.

We know your intent and those of your cotravellers is not progress or the welfare of the people but to see your people in power and the bitterness that they are not. It has been your MO since 1960.

If tinubu gets it right eventually of which I know he won't I will support his effort. It can only take a miracle to see that happen. But in all I must say this is a good move to make sure hungry and angry army personnel don't overthrow his government
