3-5-2 gives us more control in the midfield - van gaal might revert to it when his defenders become fit again. there shouldn't have been any problem with the system if only smalling, jones and evans have the composure of the young tyler blackett!

Yes it gives more control in midfield but without real penetration. In attack it can work only if Di Maria is one of the 2 in attack IMO.
And as you just acknowledged we don't have the personnel at the back to play it. Those guys at the back are not comfortable on the ball enough for the 3-5-2.

We now have the personnel to play 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 and these 2 formations give us both CONTROL in midfield(in advanced areas rather than 3-5-2 where most of our control is deep in our half) and PENETRATION.

we didn't have the personnel cos we had zombies like evans, valencia, fletcher, jones stinking up the place....rafael alone gives us 40% penetration. i think LVG should buy fabio back......rafael needs a back up & the twin brother is the only one that is cheap & won't throw tantrums for being on the bench...

none of smalling or valencia has 1/10th of rafael's IQ. jones is too clumsy to play that role too. if rafael gets injured, we would revert back to the laboured performance we have seen earlier in the season. there's nothing wrong with the system, it's just that we have too many players in that defence that loves to hide.



4-4-2 will easily be exposed if we meet a team with a solid 4-2-3-1 like chelsea or city(when they mean business). their 5-man midfield would swallow our middle 4 and once they get control of the midfield, we are toast! evans scares me & it seems jones/smalling cannot go through a season without picking an injury.

If according to you Jones,Smalling and Evans can not play in the 3 man defense that leaves the left footed trio of Blackett,Rojo and Blind, i don't think that is ideal.....and if one gets injured who comes in. ALL our players are comfortable playing the 4 man defense....there is no confusion as to duties.

If we persist with 3-5-2 we will lose too many easy points early in the season and by the time the players understand the formation we will be playing catch up on Spurs,Arsenal,City,Liverpool e.t.c WE NEED TO GRAB THE CHEAP POINTS AVAILABLE IN THESE EASY MATCHES.

they can play there, it's just that it's taking them too long to adapt.....fletcher didn't make it easy for them too against burnley, he never showed for the ball. watch blind & herrera yesterday, they were always coming towards the defence to receive the ball & they turn with one touch to release the ball - vertical passes to the players ahead, no frills no thrills.



i think we have everton at OT before we face chelsea. 4-4-2 would be the default in the other 3 games against the smaller teams but that everton/chelsea game might change in terms of tactical formation. chelsea/everton would crowd out our 4-4-2 formation....that's mourinho's way.

3-5-2 formation can work if we do this....
