I used to think this was peculiar to Nigerians until I saw German titles too Univ.-Prof. Dr.rer.nat. G. Wachutka -- meaning University Professor Doctor rerum naturalium G. Wachutka Doctor rerum naturalium, btw, means Doctor of the things of nature. or Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Rigoll -- meaning Professor Doctor of Engineering Gerhard Rigoll or Prof. Dr. sc. nat. Christoph Günther -- meaning Professor Doctor of the Science of nature Christoph Gunther or the killer. . . . Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Musterfrau These nonesense can actually get to a head in Germany. So peeps, it hasn't to do with Nigeria alone. It's more of a human thing 1 Like |

alj harem: Na wa o ! lol. Alhaji, you're three-much! On topic, if someone is befuddled about a trained engineer choosing to be addressed by his deserved title which he spent years training and paying for, how would you feel about janitors who are addressed as engineers? Yes, in the good ol' USA, for those who are convinced the USA is free of sensitivity to formal titles. lol. Imagine an inquiry regarding prospective applicants' criteria for an engineering position that gets the following response from the recruiter: ". . . hmm, actually, no, the 'building engineers' candidates are not 'civil engineers' or any kind of engineers. . . no, they're rarely college-educated; often they will have no high school diploma either. . . yes, their duties is to clean the toilets, offices and pick up trash. . . yes, we call them building engineers or custodial engineers now. . ." lol. It's the same USA where people are almost always addressed by their expired title, e.g., governor, senator, etc., especially on television. Even when they have not held the position for years! |

blink182: Wait for it What's sad is that his actual string of titles is almost as long as the fake one you posted: Sir. (Dr.) Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion LLD, D.LITT, GCK <----- from his website. This is a disease inherited from the British. In some old British publications you can read a string of " Dlitts " and "LLDs" and other irrelevant titles following the author's name. Igbinedion should drop that "Chief" from his name though since he's no longer a chief. ezotik: as the Obayanisokevbetor of Winnipeg, i only value traditional titles. and i look fwd to becoming the future Iyase of Benin, that's if Ovbioba Physics is not interested on the position. You have to have a lot of clout and know people to even be in the running for that and I don't think I'll be in contention for that when I finally do return to Naija, so you won't have me as competition. And lol @ "Obayanisokevbetor of Winnipeg" |

lol, i coined that winnipeg title and that is what i have as my status on one of my social network profile. but as for the Iyase title, anything can happen mehn, it is all about networking and i still have years to go. but yeah, the Iyase of Benin is an important and revered position so i will start with the smaller titles and gradually grow within the palace hierarchy of chiefs before i become the Iyase. nice to know u will not be contending though.. so it a dream that must come true, ise!! |

Dis particular situation is alarmingly annoying. What is the benefit of such showy display of 1's whatever? What is d big deal in just choosing 1's favourite title and using it alone? Still in this same 9ja i know of some eminent elites who's remarkable humility is and should serve as an example 2 many. A good example is Mr Sam Ohuabunwa. Chairman of Nigeria's economic advisory Team. |

In the US, lots of educated people add their degree after their name, you'd think it was their last name. Not everything is peculiar to Nigeria, sorry to disappoint you mate. |

In the US, lots of educated people add their degree after their name, you'd think it was their last name. Not everything is peculiar to Nigeria, sorry to disappoint you mate. I don't think you really understand the disease ravaging Nigerians with degrees and titles. In the U.S. people add Ph.D or D.Sc or both at the end of their name. Or M.D at the end of their name or M.D and Ph.D. or M.Sc (or D.Sc). This is what is standard in the U.S. for example: http://www.sph.umich.edu/iscr/faculty/profile.cfm?uniqname=jnriagu http://www.genome.gov/26525376 https://medschool.mc.vanderbilt.edu/facultydata/php_files/part_dept/show_part.php?id3=15921 Or at most something like this: http://www.roswellpark.edu/kunle-odunsi http://globalhealth.vanderbilt.edu/about/people/aliyum Outside of the U.S., though, we sometimes see Nigerians doing stuff like this: http://profobafunwa.com/biography http://www.profjohnobafunwa.com/biography "Professor John Oladapo OBAFUNWA MBBS, FMCPath, FWACP (Lab.Med), DMJPath, FRCPath, FFPathRCP(I), Cert. Law (UK), LL.B. (Hons.) (UK), FCLM, FICS, FFFLM (Lond)." Surely you can see the difference and the problem in the last case. It's a bad British trend that doesn't seem to be going away. |
Re: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Obiagu1(m): 6:45am On May 04, 2012 |
^^^ The problem is not really about appending degrees or memberships/fellowships at the end of ones name, that's normal in educational/professional settings (note educational settings but will be outrageous in social settings which Nigerians tend to do). The number of appendage depends on the individual or the objective. Those are not really the title I was talking about. The title I talked about are those before ones name. You'll see people introducing themselves with ridiculous titles like Arch. Bleep or Engr. YYY. Some even like it long, introducing themselves as Chief Prof Dr Engr Mrs Otondo. |

PhysicsQED: From your post and considering 3 cases (all Nigerians), Jerome Nriagu, Kunle Odunsi and Obafunwa. The only different person is Jerome who decided to leave his fellows in his profile. Both Kunle Odunsi (in US) and Obafunwa (in Nigeria) put the list of institutions were they are fellows after their names. The only other difference between Kunle Odunsi (in US) and Obafunwa (in Nigeria) is that Obafunwa (in Nigeria) is a fellow of more institutions than Odunsi (in US) and that is why that of Obafunwa is longer. People should stop making Nigerians look like terrible people. People use titles all over the world and it is not localised to Nigeria or Nigerians. |
Re: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by Nobody: 6:31pm On May 05, 2012 |
Speaking of titles, I have never met a non-Nigerian Alhaji or JP (Jerusalem Pilgrim) I know for a fact that in Gambia and Guinea it is actually not uncommon to find people bearing Alhaji as a first name. |
Re: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by PhysicsQED(m): 7:02pm On May 05, 2012 |
tunene: All of the links I posted were of Nigerians. Charles Rotimi is Nigerian, and the other two are Fulani Nigerians. I get what you're saying but my point is that listing too many degrees and fellowships after one's name looks ridiculous. After a certain number it just doesn't look reasonable and doesn't even impress anyone in the way intended. Dr. Obafunwa can just list 2 or 3 of his fellowships after his name and place the rest somewhere else in his profile. My other (unstated) point, which was less obvious, is that more accomplished researchers seem to be listing fewer degrees and fellowships trailing their names, which is somewhat ironic. |

Re: Why Do Nigerians Use Shocking Titles? by bobobabe: 6:22am On Oct 29, 2012 |
@OP, there is no problem in using the title "Engr" in Nigeria context. In as much as you are certified Engineer by COREN. that is the way is seen in Nigeria. For the fact that you are in North America where they use P.Eng after their names does not mean that Nigerian must carbon copy them. You also know that to become a professional engr, you must have practiced for at least four years after graduation from university mostly in Canada and the same thing goes to Nigeria, u must practice for four years but Nigeria choose to prefer title before name than title appends after name. Like myself, I was nearly certified as COREN engineer before I left Nigeria to North America and I'm also working to get certified in order to get my P.Eng. I will still like to go back to Nigeria say next year to complete my COREN requirement. In view of my explanation, there is not wrong in Engr title in Nigeria because that's the way of our practice. We can't always follow western world as if they have an island of knowledge in all things. |
