It's such people that incite deep seated anger and hatred amongst family members. Those are the kind of people that will be quick to tell you it's either your parents,children or relatives that are "hindering" your progress. They will never tell you it's because of your lazy attitude and lack of personal drive. They will never tell you the reason your business collapsed is due to the epileptic power supply and lack of adequate infrastructure. They will never tell you the reason you weren't granted VISA is because you can't put a simple correct sentence together and you lack the necessary basic requirements of leaving Nigeria. They will never tell you your wife had miscarriage either due to malnutrition or constant wife beating. They will never tell you the reason you were sacked from work is either because of your negative attitude or because someone more qualified than yourself was preferred. NO! They will never tell you this. It's always one witch in the village or one envious neighbor that is behind all your failures in life. No wonder murder is very rampant in Cross River and Akwa Ibom. There is hardly any week in the news you won't hear of a son who be-headed his mother or a father who plucked out the eyes of his daughter because one "prophet" said she was a witch and she confessed after drinking "portion".

Can you honestly tell me that NOBODY on earth knew of your travel plans for Ghana and the Visa issue? I'm pretty sure the guy who took you there either had all this info or knows someone close to you that has all this info. You see, this is what religion and belief in supernatural forces does to you. It deprives of the ability to take responsibility of your actions. Everything good or bad is credited to the supernatural. It's really bad because most of the population in this country have such a mind set. Let me give you two incidences...

First,two years ago i was in a bus traveling to the eastern part of the country. After the usual prayers and all that, we set off. Right from Lagos toll gate, the driver was speeding as if he was being chased by robbers. I wanted to comment but mere looking at the face of the driver told me he would rather exchange words than listen to the voice of reason and true to my suspicions someone else cautioned the driver and that person was not only shouted down by the driver but also by other passengers in the bus who made comments about leaving Lagos late. To cut the story short, we had a near miss accident whereby we were forced to park. Instead of the passengers to admonish the driver for his recklessness, they were all giving thanks to "god".

Second, December 2011 i was driving back from the eastern part of the country with a family friend. Two hours into the journey a BMW 5-series (2007-2008 model) overtook me with such speed and recklessness that left me dazzled. The driver must have been doing an excess of 160m/hr. Twenty minutes later, that car was in the bush, surrounded by parked sympathizers and fortunately none of the passengers were hurt except for minor injuries. What amazed me was that in the few minutes i spent observing the situation, NOBODY mentioned anything about over-speeding rather the wife of the driver was speaking my mom's dialect (Delta Igbo/Ibusa town) telling him that he shouldn't have left the village as one papa XXXXXX had told them that evil people were planning accident for them and they had to complete the spiritual "work", bla bla bla. She was just ranting about the "evil forces". Nobody said anything about the man's recklessness or the bad roads. Nobody chided him on why he was driving like that when he had a wife and two kids in the car rather all i kept hearing was "GLORY BE TO GOD" and "THE DEVIL IS A LIAR". Imagine!!! I simply shook my head, got back into the car and drove off.

My point is, people have lost control over their lives. Their lives are being governed by religious charlatans and so long as this continues to happen...well...i dunno.
