chelsea once won WYCOOM WANDERERS in a carling cup match by 7 goals to 1. i tell you here mikel got the fifth goal. don't be lazy, go search for the other. and if i may ask, "must it be mikel to dribble?"

Which goals did he score and when.

and let us even assume that is true, which I don't belive, 2 goals in 7 years is what you call a good return for a man whose creative instinct once put on the same platform as the great Lionel Messi.

Come on - let us look at the larger picture here. A man who has no assisits in the premier league - is he going to lead us anywhere at a world cup. What has he learned at Chelsea in the last 7 years. He has regressed and very badly. People who know nothing about football lampoon those of us who they say want dribblers. Mention any player who has won the world player of the year over the last 20 years wjho was not a dribbler. Far from being, some aesthetic extra it is a critical ingredient of any good team. Dribllers sow panic in opposing defenders by puling defenders out of position, and thereby making space for other attackers. They draw defenders to them like honey draws bees, almost transfixed, oopening up channles for their colleagues to race into.

We no longer have such players because the agents who trade our players in europe are looking for the next big, functional physical star to flog to mechanical Premiership teams. the next Drogba, Essien or Mikel. If Drogba is that good outside the premier league why doesn't he do it for Ivory Coast

@odumorom1,
how can u be writing long thesis on this forum as if you know footie? if u don't know how to find out on internet how a player has been fairing, i don't think u are qualified to be here. pls first go and learn how to use ur internet so that u will not be asking backward questions. how can u be talking about assist when u don't know he has scored goals in chelsea? do u even know what an assist is? if u can criticise drogba for not making it outside premier league, what about messi? what has he done with argentina? drogba is among the 100 most influential ppl on earth and is not because he future micheal jackson in songs but football. the mikel u talk about has shook the hands of who is who in football world. he is among the soccer elites in the world. the way u sound, my mind dey tell me say u are either a high way robber or among the kidnapers that were asking mikel for 4 million pounds.

odumorun 1: Seven years ago in the 2005 under 21 World cup Mikel Obi was voted 2nd best young player in the world after Lionel Messi in a tournament many felt he outplayed the brilliant Argentine. Fast forward 2012, Messi is talked about in the same breath as Pele, Maradona and Cruyff. Obi has not got a goal or even as assist for Chelsea.

The level of understanding on this board of what football is actually about, reflected in the absurd qts of how you rate a defensive midfielder in a game when his team had 10 men defending, shows everything that is wrong with our national game in an era dominated by Nigerian fans who grew up watching the premier league. Mikel Obi has contributed nothing to Nigerian football; he has won nothing for the country, done nothing for the national team so it is quite right as one poster did to compare him to Okocha.

Like Drogba and Essien who also contribute next to nothing to their countries he represents the dour new face of an African game that once produced giants of skill and technique like Abedi Pele, Roger Milla, Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, George Weah.

Mikel Obi, Drogba, Essien, big strong, physically powerful and functional players who can at times perform in well drilled dour and mechanical teams but who lack of real flair is exposed time and time again when they play in international tournaments where they are required to show a bit of initiative - they are found wanting

The colonisation of African football by the premier league has meant we now produce players, whose style is alien to our own culture and natural style for them, the same way we convert our land to growing cash crops for their factories while our own people go hungry because we can't produce enough subsistence crops. How many local talents playing under any flyover in Lagos do you see playing like Obi or Essien. Our climate favours a more languid more skilful and more intelligent style. But we are now being forced to grow players in an artificial style to suit the premier league. The result our worst national team in 40 years and the balance of power in Africa moving to the north and east from the former stronghold of the western coast. The last time a West African side won the nations cup was 10 years ago in 2002.

The reason is the main advantage we used to have over the North Africans - individual skill and unpredictability is now gone. You know what people like Mikel or Odemingwe are going to do before they do it. The English premier league with its fast frenetic pace beats out any real sign of individuality in our players destroying their natural instinct.

During our best years 1994 - 96 how many of our best players played in the technically inferior Premier league. Virtually none of them. When the likes of Okocha, Amuneke, Amokachis had the ball at their feet, such was their comfort on the ball, their skill that neither you nor the opponent knew what they were going to do next.

Now we all know what our best player - Mikel Obi will do when he gets the ball, he sneaks forward, just a bit makes a square pass to Lampard, or Ramires then runs back to the half way line like a good little boy. The opposing 18 yard box ?- say wetin happen ? wetin I wan find there That is the kind of weak spirit we want to lead us to the promised land

They tried to do the same to the great Samuel Eto in Madrid - But he had enough fire in his belly so he left to mallorca to prove himself than to Barca He spoke up for himself - Now he is recognised as one of the greats. 3 champion league trophies, in which he scored in 2 finals.

u ar talkin som sence bt y insert som rubish....d great makeleles void has nt been fiild in madrid nd chelsea where he was d best defencive mieldfielder nd playd over 100 games wit 1 goal...so scorin or nt is notin...cos u said mikel has nt scored....nd again if u tink drogba is nt up 2 d task i will ask u den y was he paired wit messi nd gomez in championsleague team of d year.....

This is what the Thesun Uk, wrote about him in the match.

'NO player has benefited from Roberto Di Matteo’s spell in charge more than Mikel.

The Nigerian holding midfielder will never make the headlines but the protection he provides Chelsea’s back four was again invaluable.'

Honestly i don't think this is good enough for him. We all know he is more than this, he should rise up and take more challenge. He does not measure up to half of makelele, makalele does not score but he grabs headlines and was well respected. Mikel is not even trusted in his holding midfield role by chelsea. He needs a coach that will put him upfront where he can hold the ball, turn and spray those passes we once knew him for.

@rabzy,
i can authoritatively tell u here and now that what you have is called language problem. go back to school if u can say all this after posting what an informed person say about mikel. pls, when somebody say ur protection is invaluable, it means ur protection is excess. u are doing extremely well. uncle go back to school.
what mikel has done is to excel at the highest level. from 2006 when mikel signed with chelsea till today, nigerians have never found sleep in their efforts to bring this man down. if i may ask, how many lions will a man kill to be called a lion killer? outside nigerian, it is believed that he who pays the piper dictects the tone but here in naija, it is different. if chelsea is not happy with mikel, how come ballack was left to go, deco left, balletti left. ramires came, essien is there, romeo and a host of other players yet, mikel was chosen to play in the fa cup final and ucl final? did di matheo tell u he does not like the way mikel is playing? where is the avb that pleased nigerians by not playing mikel and how did chelsea fair when mikel was on the bench? pls make ur studies and come back here with facts. do not forget that u and ur types celebrated when mikel was confirmed as not going for sa2010 but what happened there? it is a shame that men with two legs like mikel only seat home and write him off.
at club levels, mikel has not just played in the highest level but he did a 120 mins plus in a highly tensed final where chelsea won. do u want mikel to win a world cup with chelsea before u let him be? abeg, discuss football with facts and learn ur english very well because am only talking about what u posted here writen by those who know footie.
mikel is great.

crap......Stop comparing Messi and Mikel. While Messi was already playing in a world class team(Barca), Mikel was at Low-rated club at Lyon. BTW, where were u when ur mates(same age and environment) were making millions? Abegi, free Mikel. Am sure your parents will choose Mikel over u anyday, anytime....I'll rate him 7.5/10

@slim,
please forgive him bcs he was born cripple, spiritually, emotionally, physically and otherwise. everybody compares mikel to messi as if only two players were in the tournament. many of us here can't stand their parents not to talk of local govt but they are fast in criticising a man that has made it to the highest level of what he is doing. very soon, mikel will arrive abuja with the champions league trophy and uncle joe and his ministers will smile to the abuja airport to welcome him.

mikel is great.

Whats your problem, you better relax before you pop a vein. I quoted a pundits comment and i aired my opinion on it. You choose to see invaluable, i choose to see 'he won't make headlines'... so whats the language problem there.

I have seen him play better than this, i have seen him marshall a midfield and i wish he could like that again, to be like people that played in the midfield and made headlines. What the paper is saying is that he did his Job and that was it, that there is nothing exceptional in his play that would make the headlines. As a person i want him to play and play so well he grabs the headlines. So don't be a mikel crusader on me, it is wasted, use it on those you think hates him. I only wish we could see hi again in the form and style we want saw him. Whe he even has the chance and the play dictates he moves forward with ball, he passes the ball back to the back four who now makes the run. How can you pass to a luiz, terry or bosingwa behind you and this same back picks the ball passes you and make the run right into the opponent's 18 yard box area while mikel always stays put at the back. Everybody takes the game to the opponent except mikel and cech. I believe he is less than who he used to be.

@uncle,
who are u in football to know where mikel should pass the ball to? the best coach nigerian has ever produced is not qualified to be in the chelsea technical crew. mikel has played under world refined coaches who accept his playing pattern and here u are a bread seller saying what mikel shld do? do u think chelsea lacks the types of players u want mikel to be? mikel is still playing for chelsea because nobody in chelsea in as good or better than him in that position.
is essien not a goal scoring hero? is he not on the bench while the mikel that does not score is on the pitch. like i said earlier, it is one thing to read articles, it is another to understand. that is what i call language barrier. uncle, the stakes are high here and u can reserve the little respect left in ur account. you lack the grammatical standard to read and understand and u are in the lack when it comes to football information.
mourinho, grant, scolari, hiddink, ancelloti are names of reputable coaches who in the past enjoyed working with mikel and the players are this happy with him so who cares if a bread seller likes him or not?
if i may ask, which headline are u talking about? is there any newspaper u know of that does not grace its front page with mikel on the 20th of may 2012? abeg, if u have nothing to contribute here, u can discuss boko haram.
