WAR LOOM..
South Korea and the
United States launched
joint drills Monday
involving thousands of
troops, defying North
Korea's apocalyptic threat to repudiate the 60-year-
old Korean War armistice
in retaliation.
The start of the two-week
"Key Resolve" exercise
follows a week of escalating tensions on the
Korean peninsula, with
North Korea also
threatening nuclear war
over UN sanctions adopted
after its third atomic test last month.
Pyongyang has
condemned the annual
joint manoeuvres as a
provocative invasion
rehearsal and announced that -- effective Monday --
it was scrapping the 1953
armistice and voiding non-
aggression treaties signed
with the South.
The South's Unification Ministry confirmed that the
North appeared to have
carried through on
another promise to cut a
telephone hotline between
Pyongyang and Seoul. "The North did not answer
our call this morning," a
ministry spokeswoman
said. The hotline was
installed in 1971 and the
North has severed it on five occasions in the past --
most recently in 2010.
In a dispatch late Monday
from its official news
agency KCNA, North Korea
restated its view that the armistice, "which has
existed for form's sake,
would be completely
invalid from March 11".
The US-South Korean
wargames are "bringing the dark clouds of a
nuclear war to hang over
the Korean peninsula",
KCNA added, while
vowing that North Korea's
armed forces were ready for an "all-out action".
Rodong Sinmun, the
newspaper of the North's
ruling communist party,
said that with "the
ceasefire agreement blown apart... no one can
predict what will happen
from now on".
Voiding the armistice
theoretically paves the
way for a resumption of hostilities, as the two
Koreas never signed a
formal peace treaty and
remain technically at war.
"The North is giving the
impression it wants to put things back to where they
were 60 years ago," said
Yang Moo-Jin, a professor
at the University of North
Korean Studies in Seoul.
Experts point out that North Korea has declared
the ceasefire dead or
obsolete nearly a dozen
times in the past 20 years.
On the last occasion in
2009, the North specifically said it would no
longer guarantee the
safety of US or South
Korean naval vessels
operating near the
disputed maritime border. The sinking of a South
Korean naval corvette and
the shelling of a South
Korean island near the
border followed in 2010.
Sabre-rattling and displays of brinkmanship are
nothing new in the region,
but there are concerns
that the current situation
is so volatile that one
accidental step could escalate into serious
confrontation and conflict.
Having issued so many dire
warnings, the North will
feel obliged to take some
provocative action, observers say. Yang
predicted short-range
missile tests or an
incursion across the sea
border.
The analyst said he found it "particularly alarming"
that North Korea's young
leader Kim Jong-Un
appeared content to act
with no concern for the
response of ally China -- widely seen as losing
patience with its volatile
neighbour.
"Key Resolve" is an annual,
largely computer-
simulated exercise, but still involves the mobilisation
of more than 10,000 South
Korean and 3,500 US
military personnel. About
28,500 US troops are
stationed in South Korea. The South Korean Defence
Ministry says North Korea
is expected to carry out its
own large-scale military
drill along its eastern front
this week, involving the army, navy and air force.
North Korean artillery
bases on islands close to
the disputed maritime
border have already
placed their cannon in firing positions, ministry
officials said.
The North's foreign
ministry has already
warned that a second
Korean War is "unavoidable" and
threatened "pre-emptive
nuclear attacks" on the
United States and South
Korea.
The North is not seen as having the ability to
deliver a nuclear warhead
to the US mainland.
South Korea, which usually
shrugs off Pyongyang's
fiery rhetoric, has promised to retaliate to
any provocation with a
precision strike on the
North's leadership
command.
The surge in tensions is an early challenge to South
Korea's new President
Park Geun-Hye, who was
only sworn in two weeks
ago and is still without a
confirmed defence minister, national security
adviser or intelligence
chief. http://

University of Abuja VC alleges plot to destabilize the Institution

Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Prof. James Sunday Adelabu, has alleged that certain individuals and groups are trying to frustrate the academic activities of the institution, using the suspension of some of the academic programmes that were denied accreditation as an excuse.

While reeling out steps so far taken by his administration to restore the three programmes suspended in April last year following their de-accreditation by professional bodies, Adelabu noted that such efforts were being thwarted by those he called “agents of sabotage,” who were bent on destabilizing the peace in the institution.

Matters came to a head recently, when the Senate of the institution met with the students to brief them on the efforts by the management to restore the suspended academic programmes, which were suspended in April, last year. Those affected were the Faculties of Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and College of Health sciences. The session, however, turned rowdy as the students of the affected faculties promised to disrupt the planned 2011/2012 second semester examinations, which they did.

The examinations in questions, according to the vice chancellor, were originally scheduled for November 2012, but had to be put-off due to students’ protest, which commenced on the same day. It was to commence on Monday, February 11 and end on March 9, 2013.

“However, on Sunday, February 9, leaders of students’ departmental associations at a meeting with the university management, pleaded that the examinations should be shifted by one week, that is to February 18. This period, the students, especially the final year ones argued, would enable them prepare well.

“The students in their wisdom also told members of the university management that they would engage their compatriots in the College of Health Sciences and the Engineering Faculty in a dialogue to allow peace to prevail on campus and, therefore, create a conducive atmosphere for the conduct of the examinations.

“To our surprise, on Monday, February 11, just when the Senate was meeting to ratify the one-week shift, we received reports that students from the Faculty of Engineering had once again gone to lock up the gate of the main campus along Airport road, purporting to stop examinations from holding even when it was obvious to them that the examinations will not commence on that day.”

To him, the action of the students amounted to playing to the gallery, even as he said the presence of television stations early in the day attested to the fact that the students would go to any length in their craze to be in the news at all cost, regardless of the negative effect of such bad publicity to them and the university as a whole.

He continued: “the reportage of the Monday, February 11 incident in some sections of the media leaves one with no other impression than that there are people within and outside, who are not happy with the progress being made to position very well the new programmes and the entire university.”

Meanwhile, a group, Advocacy for Change Initiative (ADI) has lamented over the prevailing situation in the university, describing it as a “National Embarrassment.”

In a statement signed by the group National President Patrick Ohifeime, the group said: “The prevailing situation in the University of Abuja today, has increasingly become a source of national embarrassment, disgrace and utmost concern for every responsible and patriotic Nigerian.”

“On Monday 18th February, the University could not begin its second semester examinations. This situation is assuming a very dangerous dimension with negative implications for the educational sector, students, parents, stakeholders and the Nation at large.”

The group also decried the situation in which “innocent Nigerian students and their guardians continue to endure so much hardship, pain and uncertainty, while an institution that should be a center of excellence and a source of pride to the country has become a national albatross.”

It submitted that the responsibility to address the problems of non-accreditation of Engineering courses, commencement of second semester exams, a new session, infrastructural upgrade and repositioning of the institution amongst others cannot be left in the hands of the university management alone.

The group added: “We hereby call on the Federal Government and its agencies to take urgent steps to implement in full the white paper on the University of Abuja and restore sanity to the institution.”

mrpresido3: Policemen Threaten To Shoot and Arrest UNIABUJA Students Protesting Non-Accreditation of their Courses!!

The latest Shattering news reaching us is that the Vice chancellor of The University of Abuja, Uniabuja, professor James Sunday Adelabu Ordered Police men to Arrest or OPEN FIRE on Students who are Protesting the non-accreditation of their faculties (medical and engineering faculties).

What is the National Universities Commission doing to resolve this issue? From all indication, the Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja is a tout (this is popularly known among the students of Uniabuja).
Even the Federal Government don’t care what is going on in our Institution anymore, rather they are building more prisons, buying more g u n s and giving the Nigeria Mobile Police men the right to Shoot any student who tried to oppose. From what we are seeing in our institution, Nigerian students don’t have any right? Who will be the leader of tomorrow?
The Vice Chancellor, is supposed to be in the military regime where he can do whatever he need do and not what the students need.

I can see the fall of our dear University if a more diplomatic Vice Chancellor is not appointed.
D sch is ready to take any decision 4 d exam to hold. because dey hv granted deir request. Even if dey shld den let dem go to d minister and NUC because evrytin is in deir hand nt d sch again. These two bodies ar d federal govt. So now let us VC wat d VC will do.

UNIABUJA: Faculty of Engineering to be closed for 2 years

Indications have emerged that the UNIABUJA Faculty of Engineering may be closed for 2years pending the accreditation of the courses offered by the Faculty.

Following last week’s disruption of second semester examination of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) by Engineering students, presidents of departmental associations under the aegis of Departmental Presidents Forum (DPF) have convened congress to chart the way forward.

Students from various departments attended the congress, which was held in the New Law Theatre (NLT) in Gwagwalada campus last Friday. The president of the Engineering students was absent at the congress.

Addressing the students, President of Computer Science students, Samuel Nwoye, said officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) met with the school management last Thursday. He said he was informed by reliable source that the accreditation team gave the management three options to either distribute the affected students across other departments in the school or move them to other institutions in Nigeria or at best, wait for two years for the full accreditation.

With the disclosure, the Faculty of Engineering may be closed for two years pending the accreditation of the courses. As at the time of this publication, there was no official statement from the university on the visit by the NUC team. But the management announced that the second semester examination had been shifted to next Monday.

‎UniAbuja: Engineering students to be moved to FUTMinna, others

Three hundred and thirty four engineering students of the University of Abuja who have battled with non-accreditation of their programme, are to be transferred to six federal universities where they would graduate from.

The students who have protested severally, even refusing to allow other students of the university write second semester examinations, would be transferred to University of Ilorin, Federal University of Technology Akure, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi and Modibbo Adama University of Technology Adamawa.

Three sets of 500 level final year students would spend one year at the Federal University of Technology Minna upon which they would graduate with a certificate from the University of Abuja.

Chairman of the Task Team UniAbuja and Director Quality Assurance of the NUC Professor Chiedu Mafiana announced the decision to transfer the students on Tuesday after a meeting with Vice-chancellors of the universities involved.

Mafiana however said students who do not possess the requisite five credits including Mathematics and English or did not qualify to gain admission from inception would not be transferred.

He said those students had the option of changing their course of study within the University of Abuja.

On anticipated protests from the affected students Mafiana said, "It was the senate of the univer

Mafiana said the 334 affected students wouldbe distributed to the
University of Ilorin, Federal University of Technology Akure and
Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola.
Others are to go to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi,
Federal University of Technology, Minna, and Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria.
The chairman said that the 500 level studentswould complete their studies at the Federal university of Technology, Minna, while those in 400 and 300 levels would be shared to theremaining five universities.
``It is important to note that those students with qualification
problems, that is those that did not have the requisite qualification to study engineering inthe first place, will not have a place in these universities.
``They, however, have a choice of transferring to other departments
within the university," he said.
According to him, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
has agreed to "regularise" those who have the requisite qualifications but did not go through JAMB.
He said the students were expected to take a"leave of absence for
the remaining part of this session and join their new universities
in the next academic year.
He, further, explained that the 500 level students' certificate
would carry the name of UniAbuja upon graduation from their new
university.
Mafiana said that the decision was taken after the task team's
visit discovered that University of Abuja might not be able to
graduate the students because the structure for running the course
had still not been put in place.
While thanking the authorities of the six universities for accepting the
students, the chairman urged the students toabide by the rules
and regulations governing their new universities.
He also thanked the National Universities Commission (NUC) for
accepting to provide logistics and additional support for the
students "so that they do not become a burden to the universities’’.
Also speaking on the faculties of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and
Agriculture that were closed down alongside Engineering,
Mafiana said their cases had been resolved.
Mafiana said the Faculty of Agriculture had put in place the necessary
requirement for the smooth running of courses and that "Veterinary
Medicine had been visited and would start clinicals."
He also said the Faculty of Medicine had been visited by the Medical
and Dental Council and would return next month to ensure that all
outstanding issues had been taken care of before the commencement
of clinicals.
On when the university would resume, the Vice-Chancellor,
Prof. Sunday Adelabu, said the Senate of the school would meet and
take a decision on that.
Meanwhile, the Senate of the university has fixed examinations for March 18.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls thatUniAbuja has since
last year been embroiled in crises over the non-accreditation of
courses in the four faculties.
The crises culminated in series of students' protests which led to
the closure of the school.
The latest crisis occurred in February when the students' protest
disrupted the conduct of examinations and the school was forced to
close down indefinitely.. JST TO ELUCIDATE IT 4 MOR UNDERSTANDING@PRESIDO
