Webmasters / Re: Cuil: Am Still Down With Google by adewaleafolabi(m): 3:57pm On Jul 31, 2008 |
And i doubt if Google would be folding their arms doing nothing within the next five years Really some names have just become synonymous with some services. For example mail == yahoo. Virtually everyone knows yahoo. even those in Nigeria who aren't internet savvy all they know is i want to check my mail. I doubt if the know other mail providers. Search == Google. Students and virtually all who search start first at Google. Its become entrenched into browsers. Google has stationed itself well and gained monopoly over the search market. It will take more than fancy magazine style search to overtake Google. Google has some philosophies that drive its success. Like giving their staff a day or two off to research into whatever they desire. No wonder Google is appearing in every area of ict. Now am from the open source world and if there's any organization that's been funding and making researches and improving open source applications, Its been Google. Google even accepts interns and allocate projects to them to work on. And thats why Google is improving on a daily basis. Finally, Google's got the cash and can simply frustrate any opposition out of the market. See what happened between it and Microsoft. There was a time Microsoft was about to announce it had indexed maybe 4 billion (I can't remember the figure), Google came out and announced it had indexed twice that. Microsoft publicity stunt was called off. And with the recent romance between Google and Yahoo search and the stabbing int the back to Microsoft by Yahoo , i really doubt if Cuil will be able to live up to its bluff. |

@Bigbrovar You want me to be jealous abi with my Gnome abi . But men that looks sweet. @Pipmaster Now i understand your case. Go into windows ->Control panel->Modem options and check if your modem uses extra initialization codes. Then copy and paste that code here and i'll tell you what next. By the way where do you stay? |
Webmasters / Re: Cuil: Am Still Down With Google by adewaleafolabi(m): 10:25pm On Jul 30, 2008 |
The cuil claims it has the largest index. But to my surprise, i searched for something and it said no result and yet google gave me results |

O fissayo come over to the ubuntu side okay about the starcomms modem that worked, most of them have extra initialization commands so you'll just have to add it to your wvdial.conf . The modem bigbrovar is talking about is the evdo card. |

uspry1: Thats a good one. Anyway redhat isn't that bad its just tailored towards industrial use and that why it controls a large share of the server market. My first linux distro was Redhat 9. Remember the days. Awful. Not because it was bad but because it wasn't really user friendly. Then came Ubuntu (God bless fissayo and skima where ever they are). Ubuntu full launched me into the linux world, giving me a balance between power and user friendliness. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake can't forget it. PS: To get a complete list of Oses, wikipedia has some great stuff there. |

I heard first aluminum is on technical suspension for their Public offer. And the stock might be bearish for the short term. The current price on the market is 5 naira and the po price is 2naira. Gurus do you think the price would fall below that 2naira after the offer? If yes, then its better i buy after the offer. Am i right ? |

uspry1: No ludo.exe was just an example,it could be anything.exe,i just used it as an illustration. Linux is far more than the lovely GUI,the command line is the backbone, most problems are easily solved from there. |
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 1:16pm On Jul 24, 2008 |
pipmaster: First of all,am sorry that this is coming late (am no longer connected to the internet). If you're getting a permission denied error, try addind a sudo before the command. And all should work perfectly. @Upsry1 The authors of ubuntu Nigeria would look into that complain as soon as possible. @Bigbrovar wvdialconf has detected his modem i guess the problem was that he didn't put a sudo before the command. So it couldn't write to the .conf file Anyway how you doing i called you yesterday and you didn't pickup. Anyway take care |

pipmaster: Where did you download kpp from ? was it from http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/i386/kppp/download See the easiest way of installing anything in ubuntu is installing deb packages. Its equivalent to exe on windows. What was the error ? Try using the first approach the terminal way its quite simple for the mean time. |
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 11:03pm On Jul 17, 2008 |
@Uspry The link you gave was refering to Linmodems which are not really in use in Nigeria any longer. Most people use Usb modems, CDMA modems and PCMIA so using scan modem really isn't neccessary since wvdial can detect these class of modem with ease. Hmmm let me guess you're most likely using Reltel, Starcomms, Glo, Mtn or Celtel. Okay when asking questions try giving more details. I also use dialup. There's an article on http://ubuntunigeria./2007/09/10/dial-up-internet-on-linux/ covering Dialup connection on ubuntu. |
Computers / Re: Ubuntu 8.04: Helpful Tips, HowTo, Tweaks by adewaleafolabi(m): 10:46pm On Jul 17, 2008 |
@Uspry1 You're doing a wonderful job here. Also some of your apps might not appear on the list and yet still work with wine. Then you can post it on the wine Database. At times it might just be a missing Dll thats preventing you app from working with wine. So incase your app doesn't work just drag it to the Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) ,put 'wine' before it and see the error message eg wine /home/wale/ludo.exe The error messsage gives you a clue on what to do. Just google it out. |

TV/Movies / What's This Movie's Title? (Shown On Channels TV) by adewaleafolabi(m): 12:22am On Jul 16, 2008 |
Okay, i was watching Channels Tv some minutes ago before Power Holders decided to seize the electricity. The movie started with a female doctor working and later got into her car and while making a phone call had an accident. Afterwards, a man looking for an apartment gets her place and moves into it and then she suddenly appears to him telling him to leave her house at once. She fails to realize that she's dead and the guy begins to think he's crazy. Eventually, he had to help her find who she was and in their search, they arrived at the hospital where her body lies in a comma. But only this guy could see her. Now i'd like to know the name of this movie. Thanks |

I'd like to know how much it costs to ship a package weighing approximately 6.0lbs from the USA to Lagos Nigeria. I'd like a cheap and efficient one. |
