A major clampdown has begun on police officers close to Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and political office holders around him, a press statement just issued by the police in Abuja shows. Signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, the statement says the "Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Chidi Lloyd, the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the Rivers State Governor, Ag. ASP Debeware-Semeikumo, and the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Governor, Tony Iwelu to report to Force CID, Force Headquarters, Abuja.” They are to be interviewed “in respect of their roles as seen in the video clips in circulation," it added. The statement did not specify the offenses committed by the three, neither did it summon the Assemblyman Evans Bipi who ignited the clashes by invading the House of Assembly with thugs in order to impose himself as the Speaker. According to Mr. Mba, “It would be recalled that in the video clips, a man carrying a mace and another in police uniform as well as other security details were seen conducting themselves in a questionable and uncomplimentary manner. The invitation therefore seeks to obtain further details that will assist proper investigation into the matter.” The invitation is particularly curious because the IGP has already set up a panel to investigate the situation in Rivers State. The departure of the three men also isolates and exposes Governor Amaechi to danger. His official protection has been considerably whittled down in the past week. Full text of the Press Statement: In continuation of its investigation into the Rivers State House of Assembly crisis, the Nigeria Police Force has summoned the leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Chidi Lloyd, the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the Rivers State Governor, Ag.ASP Debeware-Semeikumo, and the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Governor, Tony Iwelu to report to Force CID, Force Headquarters, Abuja for an interview in respect of their roles as seen in the video clips in circulation. It would be recalled that in the video clips, a man carrying a mace and another in Police Uniform as well as other security details were seen conducting themselves in a questionable and uncomplimentary manner. The invitation therefore seeks to obtain further details that will assist proper investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the IGP has reminded police personnel on various legitimate assignments, particularly those attached to VIPs to always remain mindful of their conduct and ensure that they uphold the professional ethics, traditions and best practices of the Force at all times. He further warns that any officer found acting in ways inconsistent with extant laws and regulations of the Force will be severely dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land. CSP FRANK E. A woman arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs from Mexico into the United States had to have a one-pound package of methamphetamine surgically removed from her pelvis last week. Claudia Ibarra, 31, was taken into custody after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents patted her down and "realized there was something down there," spokeswoman Teresa Small told The Associated Press on Friday. A doctor removed from Ibarra a black package of drugs double-wrapped in condoms. Ibarra, a U.S. citizen and resident of Yuma, Ariz., had attempted to cross the border at San Luis alone and on foot, according to authorities. Per a tabulation of U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection data by the Center for Investigative Reporting, more than 36,000 pounds of methamphetamine were seized by agents along the U.S.-Mexico border between 2005 and 2011. Although that number pales in comparison to the amounts of marijuana and cocaine seized in the area during the same time period, the amount of meth reported appears to be increasing year over year.

Weeks after he declared a state of emergency in three states to combat Boko Haram, and one year after he originally said he would defeat the group, Goodluck Jonathan has formally pinned the tag of terrorism on it.The order, issued pursuant to Section 2 0f the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2011, as amended, comes one day after the United States announced a $7 million bounty on Boko Haram leader Ibrahim Shekau. It officially brings the activities of both groups within the purview of the Terrorism Prevention Act and any persons associated with the two groups can now be legally prosecuted and sentenced to penalties specified in the Act,” the statement said. Section 5 (1) of the act prescribes a term of imprisonment of not less than 20 years for any person who knowingly, in any manner, directly or indirectly, solicits or renders support for the commission of an act of terrorism or to a terrorist group.

The Presidency today explained its directive concerning the release of persons being held in connection with the Boko Haram sect, the first batch of which it stressed would be women and children. “This will be followed by other phased releases where cases will be treated on their individual merits by the Defence authorities and security agencies,” according to Doyin Okupe, Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs, who said the clarification became necessary owing to “misrepresentations” by sections of the media. “The presidential directive was as a result of the interim report by the Presidential Committee on dialogue and peace in Northern Nigeria which recommended the measure as part of government’s multi-faceted strategy to solving the security challenges posed by the activities of the sect.” He described the directive as proof that the Federal Government has not foreclosed dialogue as a viable option in its bid to put an end to insurgency and terrorist activities in the Northern part of the country. “It is expected that this phased release of detainees will encourage those who wish to embrace the peace option to come out and take advantage of the dialogue and peace option provided by the Committee put in place by government,” the statement said.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Major-General Garba Wahab, at the weekend said the media should not eulogize criminals as the Division has arrested a suspected orange seller who spied for terrorists and over N600 million was found in his bank account within three months. The GOC, whose area of command covers the north-western states, while fielding questions from newsmen in Kaduna relating to why the Army is carrying out general search without discrimination, said, “When we stop those who are hawking and carrying wheelbarrow, and we said we want to check, people will shout, ‘Why are you disturbing the average person?’ And I give you example; we arrested somebody here called mai lemu (orange seller) in Kawo here. And in three months when we checked through his account, over 600 million naira has passed through that man’s account, and he sells orange here by Kawo bridge. “He is there as a lookout. He is like a spy. He looks around, gets information and feeds these guys, says this is what is happening. That is why I said we are not dealing with idiots. We are dealing with people who have one or two guys working and thinking, and giving them information. And we know that before they attack they must look at the softest locations.” Wahab added that it is a criminality that the media and society must cooperate and ensure that it is brought to an end. |

FG's approved Amnesty Charter: The amnesty package proposed by northern elders and approved by the presidency is as follows: 1. A ministry of Northern affairs must be established like the Niger Delta Ministry. 2. Each Boko haram member who embraces the amnesty will receive an initial cash reward of 3 million naira to start up a business. 3. Boko haram members who embrace the amnesty program will be giving a house by the FG 4. Boko haram leaders who embraced the amnesty program will be giving a cash gift of 20 million naira each and other juicy packages will also follow 5. Selected boko haram members from each zone will be taken abroad for training, just as the Niger delta militants enjoyed. 6. Each boko haram member will be on a monthly salary of N100,000 for a period of 3 years. 7. FG must rebuild borno, yobe and other state they claimed the JTF destroyed. 8. Security contract will be given to Boko haram leaders to secure the north. 8. JTF will be completely withdrawn from the northern states, where boko haram operates. |

Dr. Ahmad Gumi, fearless cleric and son of the late famous Sheik Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, today kicked against amnesty for the Boko Haram sect as has been proposed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III and several prominent Nigerians, saying they ought to be crushed. Gumi who once escaped being killed by some suspected terrorists, made the remarks in a sermon monitored in our New York office from his social media network. Gumi declared that were Prophet Mohammed himself to be alive today, he would personally have led the way in exterminating the sect. Turning to the Boko Haram insurgency, he described it as hypocritical, pointing out that as an ideology, Boko Haram respects no law, the Quran or Hadith or Scholarly fatwa. “They have their own interpretation, anything short of that is part of the enemy that should be killed. So on what basis should there be dialogue or amnesty? It is a creed that must be crushed; it is a creed the prophet – alaihis Salam- wished he is alive to exterminate the wicked sect.." He called for a “selected Muslim high-ranking officer” of the armed forces take charge of the whole ‘operation’ from investigations to incursions, arguing that the situation requires careful excision and only someone who feels the pains of society has the capacity can carry it out.

Just heard that some BH bombers have been arrested inside a motor park by sss in lagos. so thats wat we are saying. How did those devils find their way into the park? The Nigerian Union of Road transport workers are only interested in collecting money from motorist and not doing anything for the security of the parks. Or do they also want police officers posted to all the parks in this country. |

A statement signed personally by Hayab in Kaduna yesterday said such statements by CAN and Gumi were calculated to incite northerners, especially the Christians, against Jonathan-led administration. Hayab, who was Secretary of Kaduna chapter of CAN and also former spokesman of northern chapter of the Christian body also said neither northerners nor Christians populace benefit from the careless statement released by the spokesman of northern CAN and Gumi last Sunday. “The recent statements by the duo have not only heated up the polity but have created serious friction between followers. Most statements by these two do not represent reasonable minds in the north be they Muslims or Christians, but are always politically motivated and sponsored. “Members of the public should note that for these two to issue their statements on the same day is only a grand strategy to make gullible Nigerians think Christians and Muslims are fighting Jonathan’s administration, or do they want us to believe it is a coincidence? Only a fool would believe that. Of recent there has been hyperactivity amongst disgruntled politicians who covet the presidential seat and just then these strange statements come out,” Hayab said. “Northern CAN has no quarrel with the statement from President Jonathan that it would not be the preference of the Federal Government to send in soldiers to wipe out Boko Haram for the simple reason that Boko Haram are faceless and when soldiers are sent in to wipe out a faceless group, it is the innocent that suffers. We would rather want the administration focus on an intelligence driven covert operations that would target Boko Haram with precision,” Hayab said. He called on the federal government and the Nigerian people to be on alert and refuse to be pressured into taking actions that would pitch Muslims against Christians which he said is what would happen if soldiers are sent in to local communities without taking into account that the innocent would be killed. He said when such happens, some of those now setting up catastrophe would be the first to condemn the government, saying true Christians and Muslims respect every earthly authority because the holy books say so. |
