Crime / Re: Communal Dispute Brews As Itsekiri, Ijaw Tango Over Land In Delta by April4th(m): 10:17am On Apr 27
[quote author=Cantonese post=129648322]Hmm.

What is the claim of the Ijaws and Urhobos over Warri, seeing that Warri as a name originated from the Itsekiris?

Having settled for Ogbe Ijoh as the local government headquarters of Warri South West by the Obasanjo government, how are the Ijaws laying claim to Ode Itsekiri as their ancestral land too.

The Ijaws inhabit the south and east of that area, do they also own the land to the Atlantic, where the Ijaws have owned and interacted with white slave traders since the 17th century?

Can someone clarify here please?

Just to clarify, the name Warri is not itshekiri but an ijaw name. Which means house or residence. Moreover the Itshekiri's are sojourners from Igbesen in present day Edo state and only migrated to Warri.

Politics / Re: Lagos Should Learn From Warri. by April4th(m): 2:05am On Dec 03, 2023
Makavelli001:

*Every Nigeria City Should Learn Something From The Collapse Of Warri.*

War destroys cities:
Every Nigeria City or aspiring city should learn something from the Collapse of Warri as Oil City.

Warri was a big industrial hub in the 70's - 90's.

Warri Refinery, NNPC, DSC, Delta Glass, Shell, Chevron, Schlumberger, Dunlop, Agip, Saipem, Halliburton were in full operation back then. Escravos & Forcados were at their peak.

The city thrived. The city was full of zeal and zestful activities. People living outside hardcore Warri called themselves Wafarians because of propinquity to Warri even though they were not Wafarians. To be a Wafarian was to belong to supposedly a unique lifestyle.

Multinational/Local Banks were present Citibank, FBN, ACB, Savannah Bank.

Business activities thrived. Warri port was a beehive of economic activities

Entertainment/Night life was at its peak, Musicians, Live bands at Palmgroove Hotel, Comedians held their sway: Fela, legendary Don Baker, Majek Fashek, Emma Grey, Oritz Wiliki, Rex Lawson were a few of many of the entertainers that made Warri ebullient. Lido, Zina, etc were comparable to their ilks anywhere.

The town was full of life and it thrived.

McDermot road was busy with Maritime activities and contractors. Kingsway Mall offered anything sold in Lagos at that time.

Joma & Mosheshe were big fish distributors across the Niger Delta.

Rubber produced locally, was used to produce plastics and tyres.

The town grew in size and became a conurbation with people coming from all over the country to settle down in Warri for economic activities.

The Airports were super busy, Escravos, Forcados & Warri Airport. The Warri Airport was even relocated to Osubi for expansion.

Warri was revelling in its glory. Warri Port was fully operational and served as an economic booster for the city. It served businesses in Warri, Benin, Asaba & Onitsha. The Port created huge employment opportunities for locals and the state.

Things started to go downhill from the late 90's. The community leaders and youth chairmen began to fight themselves over control/sharing formula for royalties that came from oil & businesses from settlers.

Itsekiri, Urhobo & Ijaw leaders & youths started fighting each other. The bloody fight started around 1999 and lasted for years till 2003/2004.

The community leaders started imposing local taxes called "Deve" on all companies, industries and local businesses, buildings & projects.

Little by little, the companies frustrated, started leaving.

This continued throughout the early 2000's till 2010. The companies kept on leaving, one after the other. The companies layed off their employees. Unemployment rose.

More companies left for PH, Lagos, Akwa Ibom. They layed off more staff. Unemployment increased still.

Today all that is left in Warri, is a shadow of its glorious past.

95% of all the big companies in Warri had either left or closed down.

Most of the young people have left Warri.

The ones left are driving Keke, doing P.O.S, Spa or Boutique, Beer parlour or doing hookup.

There's peace now, but the damage the greedy community leaders did to Warri, still lingers on and is almost irredeemable at this point.

Do not assume that your city can not be destroyed if it toes the same route Warri followed. Warri leaders did not ever believe that Warri will be this economically empty today while they were fighting then. Learn from Warri and protect our economies

Have you asked why big eeconomies like US, China, etc will never allow war in their countries?

We must learn and avoid things that will trigger war in our country no matter how strong we believe we are. Businesses and investors go where there is peace than where there is war.

Lagos State is presently exhibiting such atrocious high handedness in ways she is handling issues of defaults in physical planning policies, and should take a lesson from Warri. One should not be the regulator, enforcer and executioner all at once. High handedness only justifies the tag of an emperor or dictator.

In saner climes, persons who even built without approvals may be given options to regularise such developments. A government that gleefully destroys the wealth of her citizens, also poverishes herself.

Loved the write up, you're indeed a wafarian but the communal clashes started in 1995 and not 1999. Nice one

Blood pressure and heart failure are on the rise too.

Who would have believed that a purportedly certificateless Bubu whom Emilokan had bragged about making the President was such a brilliant genius after all?

God and life always have a way of humbling the proud and arrogant.

See everything crumbling around him with nowhere to turn to and now I'm sure he'd be hoping the Supreme Ice Cream Court unseats him for some face-saving. Now, just imagine for a moment that the SC sacks him and enthrones anyone of the other two or makes Akpabio the moronic thief the interim President. What would happen to the present litany of appointments this Alibaba has been dishing out and aren't we going to be starting all over again? Won't the present appointees be doing as much harm as they can in whatever MDA they are before they grudgingly leave the seats? Talk about gargantuan sabotage from every angles.

We are in deep sheeeeet.

Recipe for disaster however you look at it...

The Okoso or Cardoso he appointed as CBN governor doesn't even look like one who can lace the roguish Emewere's shoes.

No one can even give a concrete figure of how much Naira is in circulation and how much Dollar has been looted from our foreign reserves and hoarded by all them thieves in every political and private space.

Nigeria is a country where anyone with the right connection could walk into or order the minting and printing press to roll out Naira notes which they now use to mop up every single Dollar they can sniff at any rate.

One can imagine the racket going on at the CBN and Minting and printing plus Treasury house.

Very soon, and this is no joke, Nigerians will be moving around with Naira notes in wheelbarrows even to go buy a loaf of bread.

This is how crumbled Nigeria has gotten.

What a shame and disgrace.

This is the definition of a dysfunctional government/society.

My brother you've said it all. When politicians and government employees where rushing to convert their naira to dollars/pounds/Euros during the I'll fated Emefiele naira rebranding they didn't know this would be the ripple effect. Sometimes I wonder how their supporters evade calling them out, instead they'll point accusing finger at the common man. The reason the naira has not fallen to N2000/1usd is because of the BDC's going to source for dollars from neighbouring countries and bringing same back to Nigeria.

Maybe government should start arresting themselves grin

That would be counterproductive, because the scarcity of dollars in circulation was actually caused by the rebranding of the naira during Buhari's regime by the then CBN governor Emefiele. Alot of our political class converted their naira to dollars and other foreign currencies that's the reason why We're facing this crisis today.

FreeStuffsNG:

You can never understand. You still think it's play ehn. Go and keep buying overpriced US dollars. You will soon start chasing Naira with that your overvalued dollars.

By the time you want to buy garri, yam, fruits, vegetables and pay school fees etc, and you have no naira and sellers will not accept USD, you will bring out the overvalued US dollar you overpaid for yet useless to you to buy your needs then sell at a huge discount to get naira by force.

Nobody will borrow money or use our hardearned Forex to defend the artificial pricing of the dollars on the street. If you are foolish enough to buy an overvalued currency, FG will join others to sell to you too in Lagos style, o de Eko o mo Eyo.

You will get sense las las.

BDCs have started warning their members not to buy USD at over N900 to avoid them being burnt. Only Foolish and greedy people will be burnt . In fact, FG will help your greed and foolishness fast enough to burn you by selling to you at the overvalued price you were foolishly willing to pay for the overvalued USD.

Many a time you sound clever by half. The average Nigerian, has no business with dollars. It's your corrupt politicians that stockpile dollars, but I see how you subtly avoid calling them out so you don't lose your daily bread.

We don’t have the forex to defend the Naira quite alright but Nigerians are not helping matters. We have a dollar shortage crisis and Nigerians are busy stockpiling dollars at any amount simply for speculative reasons. What is going on is really scary.

We may hit 2k for a dollar before the end of the year with the way things are going. CBN needs to go back to the crude method adopted by Emefiele. Whatever it is they are doing with the PH and Dangote refineries, they should please hurry it up and start production. There will be a huge rally for the Naira once we stop importation of petroleum products. These are the short term measures to stop the free fall. Manufacturing what we need in Nigeria and for export is a long term solution.

Who are the Nigerians stockpiling dollars? Is it not the same political class you and your likes support everyday on NL? Or do you want to tell me the almost 160m poor Nigerians are the ones stockpiling dollars? It's time we start holding our political class accountable for their actions, instead of fighting a tribal war on social media that won't benefit anybody.

The itsekiris migrated to their present locations from south west, presciley from Ile -ife and ljebulands and truely there are elements of Yoruba language in their language. Therefore, they are our brothers and sisters including binis (Yorubas). That was why the old western region boundry with south east was 'sapale'. May God almighty continuing to bless Yorubas together with our brothers and sisters on the south of river niger including all regions that make this beautiful great country called Nigeria, amin.

The Itsekiri's migrated from Igbesen in current day Edo state and not Ile Ife.
