Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Soludo Caused The Massive Bank Layoffs by babalawo(m): 1:38pm On Dec 23, 2009
@stealth01

While you made a lot of sense about your views and I truly see the angle that you are coming from I will be more comfortable with a topic heading like
' Of Soludo's reforms, Bank massive Layoffs and soludo's timing and integrity as a Guber.Candidate".-To say Solodu is the CAUSE will be wrong. It will be right  to say  he wasn't responsible enough as a CBN Governor to have managed our banks. While  I view his consolidation agenda as laudable he did poorly and he did great injustice to  his academic and professional pedigree in the manner in which he handled his job when it mattered most.

In Time of crises  you know what a man is made of. Soludo was  the CBN governor when the global economy was booming. Between 2002 and 2007 nearly all economies in the world witness a robust boom.It was easier to consolidate banks then-and it was the right thing to do but as an Economist  I had expected him to  know that business boom and bust cycles applied to the broader economy.-Just like the proverbail Joseph in the Bible who dreamt of seven years of excessive wealth followed by seven years of great famine.-But our Soludo was not as smart as Joseph, aside from the excess crude account consolidate account accurals, soludo maybe was carried away by the boom in the banking sector that he threw sound and risk management  pratices to the winds.

The CBN under soludo did liitle or  nothing to regulate the banks!-now I wonder why some Nigerians attached emotions to issues.Soludo as competent as he was did say all was well with the banks-while its was obvious to discerning analyst that there was fire on the mountain. The CBN under him even went as far as making advertorials in favor of intercontinental shedding the truth from us when it was obvious to us that foreign investment in the bank has been repatriated and the bank had made a lot of losses due to high exposure and an unregulated exposures to the Oil price surge.

I have noticed that any body that tries to  put the point straight about Soludo is quickly painted a Sanusi apologist. This view, which depicts  a very hollow reasoning is not surprising bearing the culture of mediocrity that holds our political culture sway in the country .Sanusi the clean-up master has made some mistakes in his clean up approach which has also given credence to tag  some of actionshighly questionable.

Now the big one ,is it morally right for solodu to now come out immediately after a messing ending of his CBN career to seek political post? This action to me  gives up a clearer picture of the man Soludo.  Alan greenspan former FED chairman under which the seeds of the present Subprime crises were sown has in a couple of time come out to admit some inadequacies on his part when he was the FEd chairman. Greenspan will not seek a political office while the  US still battles out of recession. One is quick to ask that are we sub -humans in this part of the world

I understand while some people, particularly anabarians are blindly supporting Soludo. This is under the quise of '' the crip of  Chris UBA must be broken '' .Now we have a new tandem that is the DEVIL you know Is WORST than the Devil you dont know!!!  But for even minded person a  spade is a spade,Soludo is not the type of leader that will take anambra out of its current quarmires.

I have strong reservations againts Soludo:

1.Soludo is not a level -Headed Individual-He took all the glory with the banking consolidation-great job! but we should all remember that the world economy was really expanding then now the world is in recession he's detaching himself from his inaction's.Is this the type of leadreship we want in Nigeria?

1.Soludo is not just a common politician but a desperate one-He came out like all other politician has been saying'the people pressured me to contest".we are tired of this story we need people who believe in themselves and will come out and say I want to be governor because I have prepared myself to be governor not   people who dont have direction in life and will always claim my people asked me to contest.-Nobody will go for a job interview and answer to a question in such manners!
Secondly on this point, there is nothing to suggest intelligence in his approach, and speeches so far in his quest for the government house in anambra. his campaigns has been what we have been used to- sycopancy and empty promises -making anambra dubai while not telling us how he will get the power supply  to build and sustain his dubai, where  he will get the police to police the dubai.

1.Soludo has no moral conscience- a Soludo that those not have the guts to accept his inadequacies whilst as a  CBN governor is not cultured enough to lead Anambra.

I would have viewed him a man of content and character if he has been sending his time oustide office  highlighting on what went wrong with his reforms, and how  to cope with the damaging effect of a world recession on Nigerians banks.

I can only pray for those that have lost jobs- the courage to forge ahead.

1.Inspected an ongoing market construction in Lokoja and promises that on completion the market will be a great eye sore!

2.Only signs documents whenever He's under the influence

3. wrote "disapproved" on a greetting card sent to him-still under the influence!!!

@kobojunkie

U have the right to be disgusted. You asked if they were excuses? never !- But the fact remains that the Nigerian systems is a huge limitation to any aspiring or current transfromational governor in Nigeria.

U accept it or not, states are not independent of the FG like you will find in a country that wants to develop and it is not possible for any outstanding transformation to happen in any state in Nigeria with the system we have.Even if God came down to rebuild Nigeria he would first of all deal with the system.AND I THINK ANY RIGHT THINKINg NIGERIAn SHOULD THINK IN THIS DIRECTION UNLESS U DONT HAVE GUT TO TELL THE TRUTH.

About Fashola (to answer Ur question) He's a Governor in Nigeria! right ?-and I am not gravely disappointed at his works, even Ameachi ( i call him the best thing PDP has done for Nigeria)

, but the fact remains the Nigeria of today Is a HUGE LIMITATION to any transformation leadership!

Do u think Fashola wouldn't have achieved better in Power generation if states were allowed to generate and distribute power? He will have to wait till Kastina state can generate power!

Do u think Fashola woundn't have worked out a first class policing system if the Constitution allowed him? He will have to wait till the federal charater system is considers that the last two police commissioner in lagos were from the south south!

Do U think Rivers state can't have a petroleum company that will drive NNPC out of market?-the Nigerian system will not allow!-

Do u think its unheard that a state government or even a municipal council can bid and host a world class sporting event-imagine delta state bidding for the Commonwealth games-can your system allow it? As long as Kaura Nomoda cant hold the local government games nothing as such will be allowed to happen

Come think about a Lagos port under the control of a governor like Fashola?-

The best of brains in transformational leadership can only pacify the people in the type of system we pratice in Nigeria.

Mark me and I remain stubborn at asserting that NO REALAND LASTING DEVELOPEMENT CAN Happen under this system.

I hope Ur more disgusted cos its all about perception- I say the Engine is grossly faulty you say the driver is good and fit to drive!!! carry go driver we will meet in the middle of the journey -where? of course! at the starting point!!!

We as a people always fail to see the big picture. We institutionize people when we know there is no structure anywhere in this country.

I dont see any sane reason why any body should be overly hyped about soludo.

Making Anambra Dubia is just impossible not because soludu cant have a magic touch but simply because the stutures to transform a state is not within the state itself and does not even depend on the governor. Ask Soludo when last was there a power outage in Dubai? when last did u turn water in dubai and  water doenst flow? when last did a policeman in Dubai bullied a visitor to collect bribe? Is he constitutionally empowered to create a state police or our own Dubai here does not need an efficient and up to date policing?

There are questions no magic touch can transform till we redefine our nationhold.

@rhymz
sorry if ur angry here! but when ur angry u lose some sense.

what in my post suggest a tribalist post? I think ur own prejudice is taking its toll on you!

All i said what to analyse solodu compromising stance.for God sake if you were a recuiter and you were to recuit into a sensitive position STRICTlY based on Non-Compromise which will you choose based on their action  so far at CBN ,Soludo or Sanusi?

I have neither blamed Soludo for the crises nor praise sanusi here, not at all.I am a finance professional and in the same vein cant blame former fed chairman Allan Greenspan or praise Benanke. If you are a  student of international Finance you will know that its not today and not only in nigeria that you will you find a fed chairman or CBN governor solving a particular problem and then  before you knw it the the solution leads to another often bigger problems, that just the nature of the financial system

So take you eyes off ur prejudice for once.I only stated that from Soludo antecedent He isnt a good candidate for a compromise test, and on a bigger picture cant take the guts like ngige did if he finds himself in  Ngigie's shoes.
I hope ure more angry.

from your reply,It seems anambra people will be happy to see a re-run of events that happened btw 2003 till date was ngige prepared to be the 'messiah' or was it that when the  support from above failed he had choice but to seek grassroot support?

I think Ngige's messiahship  was bore out of a desperate need to find a constituency after being a fallen angel from his folks.

If anambra people are not tired of these events and feel thats the best route to get there SO BI IT.

I love ur choice of words though!!!

@bigjoe
infact my assersion is based on waht happend btw 2003-2006
First there is no internal politics in PDP,the primaries is sheduled for Oct 2nd but all fingers now points to concesus candidate which is Soludo why? he has the federal blessings which is a compensation for not getting a second term.simple Nigerian scripting!!!

Now as a concensus candidate what will happen? He will be forced to marry a Deputy governor he hadly knows. The rest canditates will pick or nominate his commissioners and they must get their return on investmemt for accepting to step down
So what next? OKIJA SHRINE is just some kilometers away a  'so soludo go and swear u will not betray us', is Anambra not back to the pre 2003-2006 era? Then the question can he bell the cat like Ngige?
Definately NO, why?
His compromising position as a regulator who ought to effectively bring the banking sector into order but rather tried to let Nigerians believe that all was well with the banking sector shows that He will definately be a compromising governor when the chips are down.

A GOVERNOR IS AS GOOD AS THE PROCESS THAT MADE HIM, PERIOD.

and for my friend who says non igbo will not be happy to see anambra grow.ure just one of the elements destroying this country and it a shame on you.if Anambra is okay what stops me form relocating there to enjoy the heaven status? at lease as a bloody Nigerian I dont need a Visa to reside permantly in Anambra. Can't we just brust up ideas without ethic bias?U have a long way to go!!!!

yes its soludo's right just  like you have the right to be a fool!!! Its only a fool that will exercise all rights without thinking.

The earlier we know the sytemic cancer in a system the better for us in this country. What's ur defination of a good governor

As long as its PDP,Soludo will be business as usual, its share the money so whats good about that. Do u think fashola will be able to deliver as much as Hes doing if he was in PDP?? never!!!!call a spade a spade PDP is all about settlement and corruption just like other parties but in a Hellish bigger manner!!!

See, it doesnt take anything for you to be a good governor in the nigerian context i bet it with you that my ten year old niece will be as'effective' as any governor in nigeria today.

Does it take rocket science  to sit down in government house and wait evey 20 working days to share any incoming revenue from the Oil money.

The truth is that we are used to evil leadership that when a bad governor comes we all just get hyped.lets be sincere what skills do u need to be a governor in Nigeria? A shoe maker is more industrious than any governor in nigeria save-fashola. A shoe maker adds value and get economic reward for his skills. Governors just sit there like dummies wait every 20 working days for the federal allocation to devour.Even if we can have 36 dummy governors that transparently share these money  without creating any value then we wil be better off.
Politics / Re: Soludo Finally Declares His Anambra Governorship Ambition by babalawo(m): 9:17am On Sep 24, 2009
Hum, Nigerians i wonder the way we think. For me Soludo has lost any iota of respect I have for him. This was a techocract at least in the academic sense, who got to the pinnacle of his career as the CBN governor.

The best thing for him was to go back to the academia and become a top african-economist chair in a university, there he can conduct research works.

I dont knw of any former Fed governor in the US that will stoop so low after spending a whole life in the academia to contest for an election at the state level.

It just shows one thing that we all pursue careers we are not passionate about in this country.we need politcal offfice holders who are passionate about the post been contested for not people who claim they are pressured to take up position. If he has gotten a second term and resigned that he was ging into the state politics,I will give him some doubts that his ambition might be good but not the present condition in which everyone just wants to be in the politics at all cost.

And for all those campainging for him here and have been over hyped we will see at the end of 2014 how far he has gone.U will see that he will be the consesus candidate other candidates (46) will impose thier weight on him they will chose commisioners they will demand for inflated contracts and so on.any body that dines with PDP in this country mostly will not deliver.
I am not from Anambra but any politically discerning person should knw that no matter whoever PDP hands down cant do any thing positive the individual interest in the PDP in anambra can only resolve into a forced marriage that will produce waywards result to the anamba people.

babalawo

Babalawo` or `Iyanifa` (also Babaaláwo in full, and pronounced Baba-a-láwo) is a Yorübá title that denotes a Priest of Orunmila, the Yoruba god or Orisha of Wisdom operating through Ifá, the divination system. Orunmila in the Yorübá tradition knows the past, present and future. The Babalawo as a Priest of Ifa can ascertain the future and how to deal with it through communication with Orunmila. This is done by consulting Ifa through the patterns ,

Why governments bail out banks-ROSS GITTINS
September 20, 2008
How come conservative American politicians, avowed believers in the free market, are busy propping up investment banks and nationalising insurance companies?

Are they just helping out their rich buddies at taxpayers' expense? The old story of capitalising the profits and socialising the losses?

But, if so, how come they're letting some outfits go to the wall while bailing out others? And while we're on the subject, how come central banks that profess to be terribly worried about inflation - including our own - are flooding the market with liquidity?

According to the ideal, the way the capitalist system should work is that it's good luck to them when the capitalists make huge profits, but when they make losses and go out backwards, it's tough luck. They get neither envy nor sympathy.

In reality, it doesn't work like that and never has. We don't live in a pure free-market economy. We live in what used to be called a "mixed economy", where markets operate within regulatory frameworks set by governments and governments perform some functions themselves rather than leaving them to the private sector.

This is particularly so when it comes to banks. Banks are different. Banks provide the bloodstream of the economy. All of us use them as repositories for our savings and many individuals and businesses depend on them for loans.

But banks tend to lend for long periods money they have borrowed for short periods, including deposits that can be withdrawn at will. So if too many people were to demand their money back from a bank at the same time, the bank wouldn't be able to pay them and would fail.

Were that to happen with one bank, other people would probably lose confidence in their own bank and demand their money back, too. In such a free market world, all the banks would fail and the damage and destruction to the economy would be incalculable.

This means the banking system depends for its stability on the confidence of the public. It's the responsibility of governments and their agencies to ensure the system remains stable.

They do this by closely supervising the banks' activities and by stepping in to stabilise any bank that gets into trouble and threatens to bring down the whole system.

This, by the way, is a lesson we learnt from the Great Depression of the 1930s. It's not smart to stand around while banks fail and people lose their savings.

The trouble is that ensuring the stability of the system risks creating the problem of "moral hazard" - the belief that the government will always rescue them if they get into trouble may encourage banks to take undue risks in their pursuit of profit.

But governments believe this is the lesser evil relative to the havoc a collapse in the banking system would wreak. Even so, they seek to minimise the moral hazard problem, first by their close "prudential supervision" of the banks and, second, by punishing the errant bank's management and shareholders.

That's the point to be clear on: it's the people to whom the bank owes money who get bailed out (especially the small ones). The government rescuers go out of their way to ensure that all the top executives are sacked and the bank's shareholders do their dough.

Often, the authorities arrange a shotgun marriage in which a strong bank takes over the ailing bank at a deliberately bargain-basement price, with the failed bank going out of existence. That's what happened with JP Morgan's takeover of the Bear Stearns investment bank.

Note that Wall Street's huge investment banks aren't the simple trading banks of my explanation, but they are institutions whose failure could bring down many other businesses and cause great pain to individuals.

That explains this week's US Government "bail out" of the ginormous AIG insurance group. It's getting a two-year, $100 billion loan at an exorbitant interest rate, the purpose of which is simply to keep the show solvent while it's broken up and sold off. The seizure of an 80 per cent shareholding is intended to punish the existing shareholders for screwing up.

As for the Government takeover of America's two big mortgage guarantors, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, they always were, despite their private shareholders, de facto Government agencies.

Their formal takeover was necessary to protect millions of home buyers. To allow them to fail would have been an act of masochism.

But if everyone else was rescued in some way, why was Lehman Brothers allowed to fail? Because it could be - without doing much flow-on damage to other financial institutions or households. Because it had been ailing for months, giving the institutions with which it had dealings plenty of warning.

Apart from rescuing some outfits but not others, the US Fed has been pumping billions of dollars into the financial system to keep it liquid. So have many other central banks, including ours.

But isn't this a free kick for the greedy banks? And won't it add to inflation?

No and no.

What happens every night in the short-term money market is that banks that are short of "exchange settlement funds" (known by the nickname "cash"wink borrow from banks that have more than they need.

The interest rate charged on these overnight borrowings is known as the "cash rate" - that is, it's the interest rate the Reserve Bank controls.

At present, however, the banks are reluctant to lend to each other, preferring to hang on to any cash they have. So the central banks have stepped in and are lending to any bank that's short.

But these loans are being made at the cash rate, they run for only a few days or weeks and they're made against the security of bonds or other assets.

Note that, were the central bank not making these loans, the shortage of exchange settlement funds would be so great as to push the official interest rate much higher than (in our case) the 7 per cent the Reserve desires it to be.

In other words, the Reserve is doing only an extreme version of what it does every day: manipulating the balance of demand and supply of exchange settlement funds so as to hold the cash rate where it wants it to be.

As the money market calms down, the Reserve will reel the extra liquidity back in - just as it's done several times before in the past year of the subprime crisis.

That means no free ride for the banks and no effect on inflation. Taxpayers' money is being used in ways that benefit taxpayers.

Expect probably 1 to 2 bank per city, massive cut in staff salary, upfront payment may be a thing of the past and i expect some mergers. Forget that N400B story, na to protect the banks from massive withrdrawals and panic in the populace.

@ finecat that is true and ur analysis might just be perfect!!!

400B naira - from the heavens? i believe strongly is just to ally fears first the approval must go tru the house of assembly and then the president assign to it. we all know how the controversies that ensued with the first bailout in the US last winter-its was really a thug of war before it was approved.
We ask Sanusi where the money is coming from? can any one spend such money without the approval of the house of assembly? and do u think the house of assembly wont spend a year debating this bailout-each member looking for where it will personally pay them? and if finally approved from which source? our foreign reserves so that the value of the naira goes down to like 500 to a dollar!!!!!
We are all in together sebi we think everyone can run his/her government alone as long as there is personal wealth, its a shame to be a Nigeria
Ghanaians are teaching us democracy and we no see them as a model to constant electricity very soon South African banks will come and but the remains of these coffins called banks in Nigeria, we have seen their hold on the telecommunication sector in Nigeria-MTN, we all pay Subscription to DSTV that goes to South Africa, yet we deceive ourself as been intelligent. I see intelligence my foot.

Yes, you email the money through EFT or electronic funds transfer, Many Nigerian banks have correspondence bank abroad.  Economy growth foster through when commercial banks when they take prudent risks
To stay on topic, and on record, while is within the law, I am not in favour of the head of CBN firing CEOs of commercial banks. Rather, I would like the board of directors to function as it should.  For criminal offences, I would rather have EFCC handle
@ safariman

I think the isue of the CBN firing the irreponsible boards  of banks shouls be laid to rest-since U said ur not in favour.
Its just that in Nigeria  we do not see institutions we see individuals and that is a lot of problem. For the records
the management of CBN sacked the board of 5 banks- we should not try to personalise institutions in the country.U should knw that in some countries the business of banking is entirely in the hands of the government - due to the sensitivity of  banking in any economy.
It cast serious aspersion on ur claims to have worked in commercial banks,as well as on the regulatory side !!!!
