Business / Re: hampers Bzness For December Period by BelleofNaija: 10:52pm On Oct 18, 2013 |
Hampers can be very profitable during the gifting periods like Christmas. The key thing here is presentation and a good customer base. So places like banks would be a good place to get a large number of clients in one place. Also the actual baskets need to be well made, preferably woven ones look more bespoke. And think about coloured papers to put into the basket, clear wrapping cellophane, tidy ribbon and you should be able to make your first hamper. Hamper ideas *food* *toiletries* *men* *women* *fruits* *gadgets* *household* Good-luck and go wild |

Ok for the interview coaching, it could be charged per hour or half an hour. Maybe N2.5ph. On another note - this can also be extended to interviews for loans, business partners, visa etc (just thinking out loud) |

Romance / Re: Patriarchy - 'The Male Privilege' by BelleofNaija: 3:23pm On Oct 14, 2013 |
The male dominance is shown here as a group of women were refused entry to listen to music at a hotel because a man did not chaperone them. You can read this piece titled 'Single Ladies are Prostitutes' http://ijescorner.tumblr.com/post/64007899016/single-ladies-are-prostitutes |

Politics / Single Ladies Are Prostitutes by BelleofNaija: 1:51pm On Oct 14, 2013 |
Taken from ijescorner - http://ijescorner.tumblr.com/ According to Mr Fashola and his Lagos State all single ladies are out to solicit men. So be warned if you happen to be in an event unaccompanied….you may find yourself bundled into a police van and fined for prostitution. This may seem like a far-fetched regime in Saudi Arabia or a tale from the 1920’s. Had it been either, it may have been an easier pill to swallow. At least then one would know the social expectation of women clearly defined. Not here in Lagos where it’s an unsaid rule. Single women who want to enjoy Jazz with their female friends can quickly evaporate that idea! Live concert at a hotel is also a no-no. To enjoy the more cultured Lagos lifestyle, a group of ladies are expected to steal, borrow or grab a male companion. It’s even accepted that the man can invite as many prostitutes as he pleases. But a single lady has as much access as an ‘exit sign’! This is not a misguided view of Lagos…on Friday evening my cousin, her friend and I were getting ready for a night out with a male friend. But at the last minute, he was unable to make it. Seeing as were already dressed (MODESTLY); there was no need to cancel the plan all together. Had we known, we would have gladly done so to save the shock. But then again its better that we faced this archaic rule early on in my discover Lagos campaign. We began our journey from Lekki to Four Points Sheraton (but I’d like to call it Four Point Shiterton) passing Lekki toll-gate. We arrived within 10 minutes and gingerly parked at the outside parking lot. Still filled with excitement of hearing live music at the rooftop. We approached the gate. At the entrance, we were greeted by the doorman who enquired “are you ladies meeting somebody” The question was a tad harassing but it was simply brushed off "No" Nancy replied "Where are you going?" he continued "To hear live music at the roof-top" "So you’re here by yourselves" "Are you alright?" I had to be sure! He couldn't make out what we were doing there, nor could we make out why all the questions were being asked. "It’s on the second floor" he had accepted defeat The lifts were a few metres away being guarded by a large female attendant. "Where are you guys going?" she questioned. "Rooftop" I answered "Are you guys meeting anyone there?" this question again? "No" Amaka my cousin added "I’m sorry, we don’t allow single females up" For a split second, there was an unsaid wave of charge that raged between the three of us. Family / What’s Your Selling Point? by BelleofNaija: 1:08pm On Oct 08, 2013 |
Taken from ijescorner - http://ijescorner.tumblr.com/ A few weeks ago I was enthralled in a conversation with my cousin and sister. And this topic popped up. “my selling point is my boobs” my cousin replied “and your selling point aunty Ngozi is your bum” at which point they both laughed and then all eyes were on me “what’s your selling point Ije?” for a while I hesitated not because I couldn’t find anything nice to say about myself, but it was more that I needed to pinpoint the extra factor that makes me unique. “my smile” I replied eventually, at which they both gave each other curious looks. “oh come on…” my cousin was pushing for more “ok fine, I guess my selling point is my energy” I added By now they were both getting annoyed as if I was not trying to participate in the conversation. But the honest truth is my selling point is my energy and my youthfulness. I may not have the biggest breast, or biggest bum, or the longest legs. But I can definitely carry the cup for ‘youthfulness’. In a country where bigger is better, I can live with what I have. With over 7.1 billion people in the world, we may at times feel lost in translation. And begin to look at others for what we think they have. But we must also look at the good in us, there’s something special you have that they do not. In each of us there is that thing that makes us unique from anyone else. It does not have to be a physical attribute; it could be your character, your brain, your creativity. Task of the day: I challenge you to take 5 minutes out of today and write a list of your 5 best qualities. Then rank them in order of 1-5. 1 being the best of the best! Here’s my list Energy Youthfulness Smile Good listener Optimist (sneaky number 6. Good with words) Have an amazing day Ije 1 Like |
Literature / From An Average Londoner To A Below Average Lagosian by BelleofNaija: 10:40am On Sep 24, 2013 |
From an average Londoner to a below average Lagosian How did that happen? One minute I’m an average Londoner, fast forward a year later, I am a below average Lagosian. Granted I was getting a bit fed up of London, but I didn’t envisage Lagos would be an ass-kicking-judgmental-hub of a place. Why you ask..do I feel this way? Well for starters…I can confidentially get on a bus without as much as a second glance from anyone. After-all Boris Johnson does the whole London public transport thing. But here in Lagos…it’s a different matter. Just a few weeks back…my 20 something cousin nearly had a heart-attack when I told her I’ve been using the bus to get to work in VGC. She asked me ‘WHY? WHY would you do that?’ with a very horrified expression on her perfectly made-up face. The truth of the matter is that, up until July…I would not have even dreamed about getting on a Lagos bus. But now I’m kinda used to it…and always praying I get back in one piece..but secretly hoping that no-one from my working place sees me getting off or on. After all I don’t want to be judged that harshly again. However the realistic part of the it is that it was becoming very expensive to spend between 4,500 - 6,000 naira per day on getting to and fro work using cabs. read more at - http://ijescorner.tumblr.com/post/61662817114/from-an-average-londoner-to-a-below-average-lagosian#disqus_thread |

Career / Has Anyone Heard Of The Thousand Naira Store In Ikota Shopping Complex? by BelleofNaija: 5:49pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
I thought about starting a thousand Naira store. And I was interested to spot a thousand Naira store called Grab in Ikota Shopping Complex, VGC, Lagos. Inside I saw all sorts of bargains in the store from kids dolls, to portable light bulbs. But when I got to the perfume section, I notice these were 3,000 naira. When I asked why these were 3,000 naira, the sweet and polite owner told me that when she first opened back in December it was called Grab any item @ N1000, but she was being inundated with requests of getting some perfumes. So she did, but of course she could not sell these at 1000 naira! So she quickly changed her concept to Grab 123 (Discount Store). Smart move to notice what the customers were wanting and adapting whilst still being affordable! Before I knew it I spent like 5k in the shop. I picked up a kids tutu skirts for only 1,000, which was by the way being sold in other shops for 3,500! Also picked up a lovely perfume and facial wipes. All in all it was happy surprise. I still might start the store, but I need some feedback if you really think I could succeed with selling all items at 1,000 naira? |
