Education / Change Your Diet And Improve Your Memory by Bimbo25(f): 11:26pm On Jun 11, 2009
Do you know that by eating a little bit healthier you can assimilate more and also remember more when you read.

A healthy body also translates to a healthy brain. Healthy brain cells have a greater capacity to work better.

Also relaxing and resting (sleeping) increases your chances of understanding more. A tensed up person has a 40% chance of understanding what he or she is reading so if you are tensed up or stressed out when you want to read, try to relax before picking up that book.

Whether you have exams or not it is always good to take multivitamins (and blood tonics). They help you have a healthier body, improve your immune system so that you can fight illnesses and help you cope with stress.

When you have exams your body is stressed and prone to illness so the use of multivitamins help prevent you from falling ill and having to miss any exam.

Hope you try to follow these advice. Here is wishing you all the best in your bid to be a success in your exams.

Education / Which Do You Prefer: Passing Using 'expo' Or Your Brain? by Bimbo25(f): 10:00pm On Jun 07, 2009
Personally i don't see why people like using microchips or expo. I believe the law of karma would eventually catch up with those people. I may not get the highest score but whatever marks i get i am proud that i relied on God and myself.

What about you? Which do you prefer?

Celebrities / Extra! Extra! Read All About It: There Is A New Radio Station In Town by Bimbo25(f): 11:31pm On May 22, 2009
The radio waves in Lagos seems to be the hottest in the world with different radio stations creeping up every day. As if all the hot radio stations that we already have were not enough, there seems to be a new and hotter radio station in town.

It is called BEAT (99.9) FM. It is situated in Ikoyi and seems to be headed by Olisa formerly of cool fm and of storm records (i hope he is still with storm records).

I don't know if he owns the station or is a top official. What i do know however is that the station is new and plays lots of hot music with less talk (which i like).

Olisa seems to have stepped up his game and is better than ever. He is now more interesting and funnier than ever. he anchors the morning show on weekdays.

You can check them out to see if what i am saying is true. Tune to 99.9 fm and join the beat on the beat fm.

Like they say 'you can't beat the beat'. Hope you enjoy the station.
Celebrities / Dan Foster Is Back! by Bimbo25(f): 8:51pm On Apr 29, 2009
For the haters of Inspiration fm's Dan, sorry your plan did not work. Some weeks ago it was said that Dan foster had been deported. After weeks of not hearing his voice on the radio, it was a really pleasant surprise for me to tune in to inspiration fm this morning and hear his voice on the radio.

This shows that you can't keep a good man down and the prayers of the godly works. For all the schemers and haters (aka his former employers), get a grip and let him live in peace. At least he is not the only person to leave you over the years.

Meanwhile, i am just seriously overjoyed that the guy who has helped a lot of people is back in nigeria. I really hope that he is given the nigerian passport he said he would like to have next year. Can you imagine an american wants to hold a nigerian passport?
Health / Acne Treatments And Common Brands Available In Nigeria by Bimbo25(f): 4:35pm On Apr 19, 2009
Acne according to dermatologists ‘is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) and hair follicles’. The sebaceous glands make an oily substance that is known as sebum. It empties onto the skin surface through an opening in the follicle called a pore. These factors lead to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits.

It is usually caused by five factors which are Hormones, Excess Sebum, Bacteria, Inflammation and Follicle fallout.

There are many kinds of acne treatments that are available. Acne treatments can be natural or chemically based.

Examples of Chemical acne treatments that are commonly used include:
 Salicylic acid: Common brands include
  1. Noxzema: Available as cleansers, creams and scrubs.

  2. Clean and Clear: Also available as cleansers and scrubs.

 Benzoyl peroxide: Available in gel, cream or lotion forms. Common brands are Clearex 10, Oxy 10, Oxy on the Spot, Panoxy 10 or Panoxy 5.

 Tretinion: The most common brand available is Retin A cream.

 Antibiotics like Doxycycline, Minocycline and Tetracycline. This can be found in any pharmacy shop (i said pharmacy not patent medicine sellers or chemists). Brands of doxycycline include Doxycap, Interdox e.t.c.
 Antibiotic, Anti-inflammatory and antifungal lotions or cream:
   1. Neo-medrol
   2. Neo-presol
   3. Acneaway cream.

Most of these products can be found in most pharmacies with the exception of the salicylic acid products which can be found in cosmetics shops or supermarkets.

Natural acne products include Sebamed anti acne range which has a gel for spots, cleansing bar, acne lotion and cream.

Health / Benzoyl Peroxide: An Antibacterial Acne Treatment (part 2) by Bimbo25(f): 12:08am On Mar 14, 2009
As with all drugs, there are bound to be side effects. The severity of the side effects depend on the individual using them because there is what is called individual variation. This means that a particular drug might cause a reaction in one individual and might produce that effect in another individual.

The most common side effect include dryness. If you experience mild dryness you can apply a light oil-free moisturizer that is non-comedogenic to prevent overdrying of your skin. If you are trying benzoyl peroxide for the first time, it is advisable to start with a low concentration (2.5%) so as to determine if your skin is sensitive to the product.

Another side effect is irritation; mild irritation can be taken care of by decreasing your frequency of use. For severe irritation however, it is advisable you discontinue use.

If you experience dermatitis (i.e. red, dry, itchy skin), it would be best you discontinue use and treat with a mild topical steroid like hydrocortisone.

Most drugs have people who are allergic to them. So if you fall into the range of people who are allergic to benzoyl peroxide (usually characterized by itching and redness), it is important you discontinue the use of the product.

CAUTION: Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair, clothing and linen so it is important that your skin is completely dry before you touch any fabric.

Most benzoyl peroxide products are to be used twice daily in other to achieve its result. Also stick to the regimen for about 2-3 months to obtain favourable results.

Well hope you know a little about benzoyl peroxide and are encouraged to start using it. Like I always say, you have nothing to lose except your acne.

Health / Benzoyl Peroxide: An Antibacterial Acne Treatment by Bimbo25(f): 2:03am On Mar 11, 2009
Before I start talking about benzoyl peoxide, let me tell you a little about acne. Acne vulgaris (commonly called acne) is a skin disease caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland).  Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in non-inflammatory forms. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples or zits.

Acne is most common during adolescence, affecting more than 85% of teenagers, and frequently continues into adulthood. The face and upper neck are the most commonly affected, but the chest, back and shoulders may have acne as well.

Often, acne clears up after several years, even without treatment. It can be disfiguring and upsetting to the patient (it is emotionally troubling). If left untreated, it can leave permanent scars that may have to be treated by your dermatologist in the future. To avoid acne scarring, treating acne is important.

Successful treatments show little improvement within the first two weeks, they usually take a period of two to three months to improve and start flattening out. The modes of improvement are not necessarily fully understood but are believed to work either by normalising shedding into the pore to prevent blockage, killing the bacteria that causes acne (P. acnes), having anti-inflammatory effects or by interfering with hormones.

Benzoyl Peroxide, an antibacterial can be very effective in treating mild cases of non-inflammatory acne. It prevents/may be used in the treatment of mild to moderate acne. It may be combined with other topical or oral treatments.  This acne treatment does not affect sebum production or the rate at which your skin sheds dead cells, so it is important to continue to use it even after your acne disappears so that your acne will not return.
It is available in concentrations between 2% to 10%. It is available in a range of gels, creams, lotions, bar soaps or washes and cleansers. As with any product, please read the label carefully and follow the instructions for proper use.

Benzoyl peroxide has the advantage of being a strong oxidizer (essentially a mild bleach) and thus does not appear to generate bacterial resistance like antibiotics.

Well I hope you have learnt a little about acne and benzoyl peroxide. For more information on benzoyl peroxide, stick to this forum or check out http://Acnespotfree..com. Hope to see you soon.
Health / Home Made Masks by Bimbo25(f): 12:49pm On Jan 23, 2009
Do you know that natural ingredients that can be found in your kitchen or in the market and do not cost so much can help you prevent acne?  Well, it is true. You can turn some fruits and some readily available ingredients into masks that would gradually help improve your skin. Here are some masks that you can easily prepare and use.

1. Fresh lemon juice: Apply this on your face and leave for about 15 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water. Or you can mix the lemon juice with rose water and apply. Remember to use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Try using this twice a week and you are going to be amazed at the results.

2. Orange peel: Grind orange peel and mix with a little amount of water to form a paste and apply on your face for about 20 minutes. Rinse off with water.

3. Honey and Cinnamon powder: Mix natural (I said natural or original not sugar based honey) and a little amount of cinnamon powder (you can find it in the market where spices are sold) to form a paste. Apply on your face and leave for about 30-60 minutes. Wash off with water. Some people apply it on their face overnight. However I advice that if you are just trying it that you don’t allow it to stay on your face for more than 15 minutes. This is so that you can be sure you are not going to have any adverse reaction to it.

4. Garlic: This is so easy to do. Just cut a garlic finger in two and rub on the affected area at least once a day (if you can stand the smell). Rinse off after 30 minutes.

5. Paw paw juice: This involves using a juice extractor to get the juice. Apply the juice of a Paw paw (one that is fresh) on your acne for 30 minutes.

Well, that is just 5 out of natural acne masks that you can easily use without spending a lot (good news considering the financial crisis). The most important thing to remember is to avoid overusing these masks. Find one that suits your skin and stick to it (and not using everything at once).

Health / Re: Imagine A Doctor As Nafdac Dg by Bimbo25(f): 4:09pm On Jan 18, 2009
@ reindeer, here is the part of the Nafdac law :'According to section 5 and 6 of Cap 535 LFN 1990, only registered PHARMACISTS can be appointed as pharmaceutical inspectors in Nigeria'. Hope you are satisfied. cool

@ naijaking1, please don't get offensive but try to be realistic. A pharmacist should head Nafdac and that is the bottom line. Whether he or she goes to medical school or not as long as the person is registered as pharmacist. Besides the guy is a DOCTOR claiming that he is qualified to head Nafdac because of a postgraduate degree in pharmacology. For people that do not know, pharmacology is taught in both pharmacy and medical schools. That does not mean that a pharmacist should head a medical association.

@ dreday, thanks for setting naijaking1 straight. cool

Anyway,i read in the newspaper that the matter is about to go to court. I would advice that the Doctor in question (Dr Paul) resign before he is forcefully removed. He knows that he is not fit for the job. For crying out loud, does he even know how to carry out a chemical assay on Vitamin C or any other drug for that matter? I wonder what is next, a doctor as the head of Pharmacists council of Nigeria? Pleeease give me a break.

Health / Imagine A Doctor As Nafdac Dg by Bimbo25(f): 7:02pm On Jan 17, 2009
I don't know who thought that a doctor is supposed to be the NAFDAC DG. According to the constitution for Nafdac, ONLY a pharmacist and not a doctor with hundreds of post graduate degree in pharmacology is supposed to head Nafdac.

I need all the pharmacists in the house to please join me in protesting this ripoff. Afterall they took us to court for trying to upgrade to Pharm D and they booted us out of being the Minister of Health.

Health / 3 Do’s And Don’ts Of Acne by Bimbo25(f): 1:14pm On Jan 14, 2009
The basis to treating any ailment is to know all about that ailment, what causes it, how to prevent it and what can be done to treat it. In this article I am concentrating on what you should do to prevent and also get rid of acne effectively. Some of the statements I am going to make are supported by dermatologists while some are made based on my personal experience. So let us begin.

1. DO: Always clean your face at night with a cleanser that is suitable for your face (especially for ladies who have used make-up throughout the day).
DON’T: Sleeping with your make-up on.

2. DO: Take Vitamins or Antioxidants. Not only does it improve your general immune system, it helps fight the bacteria that causes acne. So it is a win-win situation taking vitamins/antioxidants because you would have a healthier body and get rid of your acne.
DON’T: Take antibiotics. It may be necessary at times but it is advisable to avoid it at all cost. Why? You might ask. Well it is because bacteria in your system may get accustomed to the antibiotics and may develop resistance to these drugs. So that when you really need to treat a disease that they cause, the antibiotics would not have any effect. This would cause you to use a higher strength of the drug or a higher antibiotic. Trust me I know my final year project was on observing the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics that were used often and indiscriminately and the results were alarming.

3. DO: Stick to an acne treatment that does not cause irritation or side effects for about 2-3 months.
DON’T: Quitting an acne treatment before 2 months. Acne took a lot of time to emerge; it is not going to go immediately and much especially if you do not use the acne treatment consistently. Use any acne treatment appropriately and give it time to work.

Well that is three do and don’ts of how to prevent and treat acne. I will post more on how to prevent and effectively treat very soon. Hope you join me to learn more.
See you then.

Health / 5 Myths Surrounding Acne by Bimbo25(f): 9:04pm On Jan 11, 2009
Acne affects a lot of people and in their quest to clear their acne; they are misled by some myths that could later affect their skin in a terrible way. So in this piece we are going to learn about these myths and correct your misconceptions so as to help you get rid of your acne effectively.

Myth #1: Acne is caused by poor hygiene or dirt: That is wrong. According to dermatologists, acne is caused when the dead skin cells and the oil from your skin combine and cause the formation of plugged pores. So it has nothing to do with dirt, overwashing / overscrubbing will cause irritation of your skin and make your acne worse. It is okay however to wash your face or body at least 2-3 times a day, if you wash it more than that you can have dry, flaky skin that would cause the production of more oil. After washing you can then apply an appropriate acne treatment.

Myth #2: Acne is caused by diet: From a lot of researches that has been done, there as not been any connection found between diet and acne. However for me I don’t believe those researches because I know that when I take foods that are high in fat/oil I get a new episode of acne. So I simply avoid those foods, whether there is evidence of the relationship between diet and acne or not. If you are like me that certain foods cause you to breakout, it is advisable you avoid such foods (even though it is hard to do so).

Myth #3: Make-up causes acne: Some make-up products cause acne breakout for some people because of some ingredients that are comedogenic. However if you purchase products that are non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic, oil-free i.e. water-based and hypoallergenic, you can enjoy your make-up without being afraid that you would breakout. It is however advisable that you avoid using make-up when exercising as sweat and the make-up can cause acne even if it is non-comedogenic/non-acnegenic make-up.

Myth #4: Sweating is good for your acne: Wrong! Even though exercise (which could make you sweat profusely) is good, it could lead to increased oil production which in combination with sweat, heat and friction can aggravate the production of acne. Swimming can be said to be the best form of exercise for acne sufferers, because in water perspiration, heat and friction are out of the picture.

Myth #5: Acne is caused by stress: Stress does not necessary cause acne but it can trigger flare-ups (as I discovered with my body). Stress causes the sebaceous glands to produce more oil which can cause acne. It is advisable to keep tabs on your personal reaction to stress and try to find time to relax and be happy. It is not only good for your skin but your whole body.

Hope you have learnt a thing or two that would help you in keeping your skin acne-free. For more information on how to prevent acne, you could check out my blogs http://Beautyandhealthshop..com or http://Beautyandhealth1. . Hope you enjoy all my postings.
