Crime / From N300m To N900m -- How Kidnapping For Ransom Is Booming In Nigeria by Blessing28s: 11:20am On Jul 04
Kidnapping, though existent before now, is on the rise and has become the new "oil boom" for miscreants and terrorists, who demand ransoms as high as 300-900 million Naira from their victims.

Nigerians traveling on highways, between states, or even staying in their homes no longer feel safe as the rate of kidnapping skyrockets.

Gunmen reportedly abducted Janet Galadima-Gimba, a customary court judge, along with her four sons from their residence in the Mahuta area of Kaduna on the 23rd of June, 2024.

The abductors, numbering about 15, invaded the judge’s residence at night when her husband, a medical doctor, was away on duty. Tragically, Victor Gimba, the first child was killed while in captivity, as the family could not provide the 300 million ransom demanded by their abductors.

Similarly, Hajiya Hauwa’u Adamu, the mother of famous Hausa musician Dauda Adamu, popularly known as Rarara, was kidnapped, with her abductors reportedly demanding a ransom of 900 million Naira.

Recall that in March, bandits kidnapped 16 people in the Gonin Gora area of Kaduna and demanded a ransom of 40 trillion Naira, 11 Hilux vans, and 150 motorcycles.

Politics / Wike Vs Ireti Kingibe: Why FCT Heavyweights Are At Loggerheads by Blessing28s: 12:25pm On Jul 02
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, threatens Ireti Kingibe, Senator for FCT's position in the next general elections as they clash over FCT projects.

Senator Kingibe in an Arise TV interview complained that Wike is not focusing on the needs of the people revealing that Abuja lacks potable water, healthcare, education and security. Stating that he does not carry her along in his decision-making.

Minister Wike who spoke at the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the Mabushi bus terminal in Abuja, on Monday, reacting to Kingibe's claims asserted that she will not be reelected in 2027.

He said,“If we have done well, we have done well. If we haven’t done well, we haven’t done well. I am proud to say that in the short time that President Tinubu has appointed us, we have done well,” Wike said.

Addressing the senator’s performance, Wike questioned, “You said there are no schools and hospitals. You, as a legislator, what have you done? How many bills have you sponsored to improve our education and health sectors?”

Challenging Kingibe's popularity, he continued, “I challenge that legislator. If you are very popular, in 2027, come and run under Abuja; we will fail you. You think that what happened last time will happen again? It will not happen again. If you are popular, come and run. Luckily for me, I am the FCT minister now. So, here is my territory, and I am not afraid.”

Business / Nigeria’s Business Landscape: The Runners And The Believers by Blessing28s: 9:40am On Jul 02
The Nigerian business landscape is a paradox. Despite being rich in human and material resources, people and businesses continue to face multiple challenges, even as key economic metrics continue to decline.

In the past year, around eight top multinational companies across various sectors have either exited the country or announced their intentions to leave. Given the current strain across sectors, particularly the recurrent financial losses that telcos have suffered since last year and their outcry for government support, one wonders what the consequences would be for the already strained economy if such companies were to throw in the towel.

The economy operates as a middle-income, mixed economy, and an emerging market. It has an extensive range of sectors including manufacturing, financial services, communications, technology, and entertainment, all of which contribute to its status as the 32nd-largest economy in the world in terms of nominal GDP. Although it now stands as the fourth-largest economy in Africa, it continues to play a significant role in providing goods and services for the entire West African region.

Nigeria, ranking 14th globally in oil production, is rich in other natural resources, which makes it attractive for potential investors looking to explore this largely untapped market. The investments are crucial for the economy's vitality, emphasizing the need for continued investment if the returns on these investments are desired. Yet, despite these assets and potentials, Nigeria’s economy is in distress. Businesses are struggling. This is evident in the alarming number of companies withdrawing from the country.

These exits are symptomatic of deeper economic issues. The inflation rate in Nigeria has skyrocketed to its highest level in years, marking a significant economic challenge for the country. With an inflation rate of 33.95%, an interest rate of 26.25%, and persistent foreign exchange challenges, the business environment in Nigeria is becoming increasingly untenable.

This surge in inflation has been accompanied by a substantial depreciation of the naira, which has reached unprecedented lows

Biden who had spent the week leading up to the debate at Camp David, Maryland, where aides helped him prepare with mock set-ups, however, appeared unsteady as he approached the podium and faced the first question of the night.

Celebrities / Grass To Grace Series (26): Veekee James' Rise From A Dropout To Celebrity Fashi by Blessing28s: 6:23pm On Jun 26
Ruth Erikan James, popularly called Veekee James, clearly fulfills the Proverbs 22:29 scripture: "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings."

Her grass-to-grace story shows that it is possible to live out your dreams regardless of your background. It's a story of how talent, passion, determination, diligence, excellence, and consistency can set you above your peers.

Born and raised in Ajegunle
The multi-talented owner of the Veekee James and Erikan fashion brands was born without a silver spoon. She was born and raised in Ajegunle. Veekee lost her father at the age of 5, and her mother, who was a tailor, was left to cater to the family, which included Veekee and her two younger brothers. She recalls being sent out of school for owing fees but received support from her uncles.

Ajegunle, akin to a slum, saw Veekee James and her family hustle to get a good place to bathe at the very least. According to Veekee, Ajegunle definitely isn't a good place to raise a child. Veekee witnessed families who, through generations, remained stagnant, replicating the poverty of their fathers, and girls getting pregnant out of wedlock. Good role models were hard to come by, but her mother did all she could to raise her and her brothers right.

Fulfilling her family's desires
Veekee's family wanted her to become a doctor. She was "Jambed by JAMB" three times before finally settling to study Biochemistry, a course she didn't like, at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Although she got financial assistance from her uncles in the first year of school, by the second year she started juggling school and entrepreneurship, focusing on makeup and hairstyling. She stated in an interview that she didn't want to do tailoring, as she saw it as a poor man's job because her mom didn't make much money.

We have watched them blossom and seen their love strengthen over time, conquering all obstacles. Now, they officially become husband and wife as they tie the knot on 25th June, 2024.

Here is a timeline of Davido and Chioma's love story:
Their love story dates back to before Davido became the superstar he is today, during his undergraduate years at Babcock University. David Adeleke and Chioma Avril both attended the institution where he pursued a degree in music while Chioma studied Economics. He was smitten the moment he set eyes on her, but Chioma was initially unimpressed.

In an interview with YouTuber and vlogger Tayo Aina, Davido recounted their meeting: “I was in school for a year before I blew up. That was when I met my wife. I remember the day I saw her. I can never forget it. I was in a Prado, and I looked behind and saw this girl walking. It was Chioma. I told Lati, 'Omo, I like that girl, go and call her for me.' Career / SPOTLIGHT: YSDN, The Nigerian Organisation Bridging The Gap Between Youths And S by Blessing28s: 8:37am On Jun 25
We might not live in a perfect world, but we can contribute towards making it better, if not for the present, at least for our future and for generations unborn.

Youth symbolizes strength, and the Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), led by Damilola Hamid Balogun, is leveraging that advantage to bring about significant changes in the world via Sustainable Development Goals. We can describe the YSDN initiative as "By youths, for all."

In this interview, Barr. Omatseye Carpe, the Operations Manager of Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), discusses the vision of YSDN, its impact, challenges, success stories, and future goals.

Can you give us an overview of the Youth Sustainable Development Network and its primary mission?

The name Youth Sustainable Development Network explains what the organization is all about: bridging the gap between youths and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was founded on the understanding that there are 17 goals addressing global issues that affect everyone and require immediate action. Often, in this region, we are not aware of what these global issues are or how they affect us individually or collectively. It is well-known that youths are the driving force of any nation, and if anything is to be done concerning these issues, youths must be involved. That is why YSDN is focused on youth development, youth participation and youth inclusion in the achievement of the SDGs.

What are some specific programmes or initiatives YSDN has implemented to create an enabling environment for young people to contribute to the SDGs?

To achieve our goals, we have several avenues that we use and currently employ. We have conferences, programmes, and projects. Reaching out to youths is not easy, but we've used different methods and partnered with various organizations worldwide.

We have our annual conference, which over the years has impacted about 10,000 youths. The conference theme changes every year, focusing on youth inclusion in the SDGs, and addressing issues such as climate change, energy, hunger, and poverty. Our conference this year is coming up in Morocco. Everything is set, and we are hoping for a successful event.

There is also a project currently underway called EcoLearn. It seeks to bring the SDGs to public schools in a non-conventional way. We are working on this in partnership with other youth-led organisations, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, the Public Service Staff Department Centre in Magodo, and the Netherlands consulate in Lagos. The project kicked off last month.

Celebrities / "Only 2% Are Christians" -- Reno Omokri Explains Why India Is More Prosperous Th by Blessing28s: 8:54am On Jun 24
My greatest education is not my British education. Rather, it is travel. One country that blew my mind is India. Few countries have as much self confidence as India has.

In India, they painstakingly renamed all their towns and cities from the names the British gave them. Bombay was restored to Mumbai, Calcutta reverted to Kolkata, Bangalore changed to Bengaluru, and so on. And you do not see brides getting married in white dresses. Indian brides generally marry in red. Red is their traditional marital colour.
And the only books that they translated into Hindi were science books. Only 2% of their population is Christian. They retained their ancient religion, Hinduism. Today, they are more prosperous than the tithe payers of Africa and their Daddy GOs.

Another culture shock you get from India is that you can spend a week there and not find anyone named John, Michael, James, George, or even sillier names, like Cletus, Remigius, Urbanus, or any other -us ending name. If it is not Deepak, it will be Rahul, Tribhuvan, Sanjay, Pradeep or Rajiv. If you cannot pronounce their names, that is your headache! And we can learn from that in Nigeria.

Romance / Reasons A Man May Not Marry You Even After Years Of Dating by Blessing28s: 12:55pm On Jun 22
Dating someone for many years can often lead to expectations of marriage, but sometimes that anticipated proposal never comes.

Understanding the reasons behind this can provide clarity and help manage expectations. Here are several potential reasons why a man might not marry you, even after a long-term relationship.

1. Fear of Commitment

One of the most common reasons is a fear of commitment. Despite being in a long-term relationship, the idea of marriage can be intimidating for some men. Emotional barriers which can stem from past experiences or witnessing negative relationships can create a fear of commitment. He might worry about the potential for divorce or losing his independence. Commitment issues can also stem from deeper psychological factors, such as attachment styles or personal insecurities.

2. Comfort in the Status Quo

Many men may feel content with the current state of the relationship and see no need to change it by getting married. If he feels the relationship is already fulfilling and stable, he may not see the need for a formal commitment. Also, some people are resistant to change and may fear that marriage will alter the dynamics of the relationship.

3. Financial Concerns

Financial stability and concerns about the costs associated with marriage can be significant barriers. The financial burden of a wedding, combined with potential future financial responsibilities, can be daunting. Also, he might prioritize his career or financial goals and feel that marriage could interfere with these priorities.

The leader of the secessionist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is seeking to negotiate with the Nigerian government to drop the treasonable felony charges against him.

Mr. Kanu, who has been detained since 2021, faces trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja over his separatist campaigns aimed at creating the Biafra Republic from Nigeria.

At the court hearing on Wednesday, 19th June, Mr Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, notified the judge, Binta Nyako, that his client was seeking to dialogue with the government to drop the charges.

With reference to section 17 of the Federal High Court Act, Mr Ejimakor stated, “In any proceeding, the court may promote reconciliation among parties thereto and encourage and facilitate the amicable settlement thereof.”

Barrister Ejimakor also moved an application objecting to the court’s jurisdiction to try the IPOB leader, who appears in court from the State Security Service (SSS) custody in Abuja. He said that his client would pursue an out-of-court settlement route if the court rejected his application challenging the court’s jurisdiction.

He also stated that he had a discussion with prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), concerning the proposition. However, according to the defense lawyer, the prosecutor told him to leave the discussion for another time.

Crime / Mobhad: How Singer's Family Went From Demanding Autopsy To Rejecting It by Blessing28s: 3:31pm On Jun 19
After the last autopsy result saga, the family of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, have come out to reject the autopsy results, demanding an independent post-mortem and toxicology analysis to uncover the true cause of his death.

Mohbad, who died on September 12 at the age of 27 under controversial circumstances, had his remains exhumed by the police for an autopsy on September 21 in order to determine the cause of his sudden death after outrage from fans.

However, the autopsy results were deemed inconclusive by Sunday Osiyemi, a pathologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). Osiyemi attributed the inconclusiveness to factors such as body decomposition and potential reactions to medications Mohbad had received before his death.

Challenge to Autopsy Authenticity

Premium Times reported that the Aloba family led by Mohbad's father, Joseph Aloba, and their legal team headed by Wahab during a virtual press conference challenged the Lagos State Government to confirm the authenticity of the autopsy expressing dissatisfaction with the inconclusive autopsy results and demanded a thorough investigation.

The family raised concerns about the location where the autopsy was conducted, seeking clarification and transparency.

Events / Ojude Oba: All You Need To Know About Ijebu’s Magnificent Festival by Blessing28s: 2:52pm On Jun 19
In recent times, pictures of beautiful Ijebu men and women clad in gorgeous “asoebi” in large numbers have set the internet ablaze, and this year is no different. However, beyond the style, aura, and vibrant colors, the Ojude Oba Festival symbolises a rich cultural heritage.

What Ojude Oba about

The literal meaning of Ojude Oba is the King’s forecourt or frontage or the Majestic Outing. It is celebrated annually by the yoruba’s of Ijebu land on the third day of sallah ‘Ileya’ celebration to pay homage to the reigning monarch of the land, Awujale of Ijebuland.

Here’s how it came to be
The Ojude Oba festival began as a small gathering of Muslim converts in Ijebu-Ode over 100 years ago. These early Muslims paid homage to the Awujale of Ijebu-land, expressing gratitude for the freedom to practice their faith.

The roots of this festival trace back to 1878 during the reign of Awujale Ademuyewo Afidipotemole. Alli, a slave who later became known as Alli-Tubogun, started openly practicing Islam with his master’s blessing, facing no barriers or fears of persecution. His efforts, supported by his master, led to the growth of Islam in the region. By 1880, Islam had gained numerous followers, and local mosques were established throughout Ijebu-Ode.

Business / NCC: 7 Reasons Why Your Data Depletes Speedily And How To Stop It by Blessing28s: 1:31pm On Jun 18
Amid rising complaints from mobile subscribers in Nigeria about the swift depletion of their data bundles, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has provided an explanation.

The NCC has identified seven key factors contributing to this issue and offered advice on how subscribers can maximize their data usage.

According to the NCC, the following factors and apps are major contributors to the rapid depletion of mobile data:

1. Background Data Usage: Many apps run in the background, consuming data even when not actively used. Examples include social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram; and email apps like Gmail and Outlook.

2. Automatic Updates: Apps, operating systems, and other software often update automatically, using significant amounts of data. Examples include updates from Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and system updates for Android and iOS.

3. GPS and Location Services: Apps requiring continuous GPS tracking, such as Google Maps, Waze, and fitness apps like Strava, consume a lot of data.

Education / We Aspire, The Youth Initiative Nurturing Global Leaders by Blessing28s: 3:16pm On Jun 17
If you dream it, you can achieve it. Safe to say, your dreams are valid. This is a mantra that We Aspire Youth Mentorship Initiative stands for, and strongly so.

Just like Mary asked, the people of Akure, who weren’t familiar with the initiative’s vision, inquired of Angel Ifeoluwa in 2015, saying, “How can these things be?” They obviously needed substantial evidence to embrace it.

However, after almost a decade of impacting lives, the vision birthed by Dr. Ifeoluwa no longer needs pitching. Its light burst forth despite encountering the darkness of the “Doubting Thomas” syndrome. We Aspire Youth Mentorship Initiative is no longer crawling or walking but now flying, as seeds carried by the wind and germinating on good soils all over the world.

What's the We Aspire Youth Mentorship Initiative all about?

We Aspire Youth Mentorship Initiative is a non-governmental organization born out of the drive to birth global leaders for sustainability. Our vision is to innovate pragmatic solutions to educational system challenges in Nigeria and beyond.

Politics / Aper Aku Writes Gov. Alia From The Great Beyond by Blessing28s: 3:31pm On Jun 16
Our ancestors said I should tell you that they are glad to see that you have now removed the previous regalia and are now ruffling feathers and busting balls in suit and traditional attire rather than liturgical vestments.

I personally do not feel comfortable interfering in the affairs of your leadership. But I have been itching to write you since the 29th of May 2023 when you were sworn in as executive governor of Benue State. A state l once served as governor. I feared as your admirers cheered you to the high heavens, including the irritating pretentious men and women who called themselves sons and daughters of Benue State without the required moral credentials, and the external enemies who for a long time, have been disguising as friends of the state. I was extramondane here and since have been wondering how best to message you.

Let me start by saying that your friend and once a senior colleague, Rev. Father Orshio Adasu finally figured out the workaround I am using to send this message to you. So he and the likes of Wantaregh Paul Unongo, though yet to be committed to the mother earth, and several others of your ancestors all say l should tell you they wish you well.

They said I should tell you that they are glad to see that you are wagging fingers, ruffling feathers and busting administrative balls in the streets of Makurdi town and other parts of the hamlets in the state.

In the words of Adasu, "For some of us who were in the vineyard and later in politics like you now find yourself, we understand you and the shepherd's enthusiasm in your head. Your adoration for a “social reform” in every sphere of the state is not something we expect you to abandon in a hurry looking at the pathetic status of the state in this 21st century generation of states in the federal republic of Nigeria; Benue State at some point seemed to have stopped moving both democratically and economically. Having said that, I write to say, be wary, be wary, be wary of, my son/soul brother.

I can see that you are having minor problems understanding the political landscape in Benue State. I could help you out.
