Politics / Hardship: Apostle Emeka Nkwuda’s Open Letter To President Tinubu by Blessing28s: 5:34pm On Jul 17
The President of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria,
Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Your Excellency Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you with a heavy heart and a deep sense of concern regarding the current economic hardship facing our nation. As a citizen who has always believed in the resilience and promise of our country, I am compelled to share the struggles that I and many others are enduring.

The economic challenges we are facing have not just been statistics on news reports; they have manifested into real hardships for families across our nation. The rising costs of essential goods and services, coupled with stagnant wages, have created a profound sense of insecurity and anxiety among the people.

I have seen friends lose their jobs, families struggling to make ends meet, and businesses in my community closing their doors. These are not merely economic setbacks but personal tragedies that affect the fabric of our society. The dreams and aspirations of hardworking Nigerians are being shattered, and the gap between the wealthy, especially politicians, and the rest of the citizens seems to widen every day.

Islam for Muslims / Hijrah 1446: Significance, Origin... All To Know As Muslims Mark New Year Calend by Blessing28s: 12:46pm On Jul 08
Borno, Bauchi, Oyo, Osun, Kebbi, Jigawa, Kano, and Kwara states are observing a public holiday today to celebrate the start of the Hijrah 1446 calendar, which commenced yesterday, Sunday.

The Hijrah, also known as the Islamic New Year, commemorates a pivotal event in Islamic history and holds profound spiritual and cultural importance for Muslims. As Muslims around the world mark the beginning of Hijrah 1446, it is essential to understand the significance, origin, and key facts about this important occasion in the Islamic calendar.

The Origin of Hijrah

The term "Hijrah" refers to the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. This migration was a turning point in Islamic history, marking the establishment of the first Muslim community (Ummah) under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad. The event of Hijrah signifies not just a physical journey but also a profound spiritual and societal transformation.

The Islamic calendar, or Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It begins with the month of Muharram and is used to date significant events in the Islamic world. The year 1446 AH (Anno Hegirae, "in the year of the Hijrah"wink marks 1446 years since the Hijrah.

Politics / Explained: Why Nigerians Are Experiencing Recurring Fuel Scarcity by Blessing28s: 11:49am On Jul 08
Lagos and other states in Nigeria are beginning to experience fuel scarcity as private depot owners hiked the ex-depot price of petrol from N630 to N720 per liter.

This occurred as fuel scarcity intensified in Abuja and nearby states on Sunday, with some filling stations selling PMS for as much as N900 per liter.

Punch reported that several filling stations in Lagos, Ogun, and some other states have run out of stock as they refused to purchase high-priced fuel from private depots.

Reasons for the Fuel Scarcity

In an interview, Hammed Fashola, the National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, stated that many filling stations remained closed because they had no fuel in their tanks.

He said, "Those that shut their stations do not have fuel to sell. When you don’t have fuel, you cannot open your station. That is the problem. You know the NNPC is the sole importer of this product. I think it is in the best position to tell us what is actually going on.

"Currently, independent marketers cannot buy what the private depots are selling. They are selling fuel between N715 and N720 per liter. How much will marketers sell the product? Look at the cost of bringing it to their depots; with transportation and other depot expenses, it will be too costly for them. That is why the stations are shut down. Some marketers refuse to go and buy because they know the masses cannot afford high-priced petrol in this economy. That is the situation for now," the IPMAN leader stated.

Crime / From N300m To N900m -- How Kidnapping For Ransom Is Booming In Nigeria by Blessing28s: 11:20am On Jul 04
Kidnapping, though existent before now, is on the rise and has become the new "oil boom" for miscreants and terrorists, who demand ransoms as high as 300-900 million Naira from their victims.

Nigerians traveling on highways, between states, or even staying in their homes no longer feel safe as the rate of kidnapping skyrockets.

Gunmen reportedly abducted Janet Galadima-Gimba, a customary court judge, along with her four sons from their residence in the Mahuta area of Kaduna on the 23rd of June, 2024.

The abductors, numbering about 15, invaded the judge’s residence at night when her husband, a medical doctor, was away on duty. Tragically, Victor Gimba, the first child was killed while in captivity, as the family could not provide the 300 million ransom demanded by their abductors.

Similarly, Hajiya Hauwa’u Adamu, the mother of famous Hausa musician Dauda Adamu, popularly known as Rarara, was kidnapped, with her abductors reportedly demanding a ransom of 900 million Naira.

Recall that in March, bandits kidnapped 16 people in the Gonin Gora area of Kaduna and demanded a ransom of 40 trillion Naira, 11 Hilux vans, and 150 motorcycles.

Business / Nigeria’s Business Landscape: The Runners And The Believers by Blessing28s: 9:40am On Jul 02
The Nigerian business landscape is a paradox. Despite being rich in human and material resources, people and businesses continue to face multiple challenges, even as key economic metrics continue to decline.

In the past year, around eight top multinational companies across various sectors have either exited the country or announced their intentions to leave. Given the current strain across sectors, particularly the recurrent financial losses that telcos have suffered since last year and their outcry for government support, one wonders what the consequences would be for the already strained economy if such companies were to throw in the towel.

The economy operates as a middle-income, mixed economy, and an emerging market. It has an extensive range of sectors including manufacturing, financial services, communications, technology, and entertainment, all of which contribute to its status as the 32nd-largest economy in the world in terms of nominal GDP. Although it now stands as the fourth-largest economy in Africa, it continues to play a significant role in providing goods and services for the entire West African region.

Nigeria, ranking 14th globally in oil production, is rich in other natural resources, which makes it attractive for potential investors looking to explore this largely untapped market. The investments are crucial for the economy's vitality, emphasizing the need for continued investment if the returns on these investments are desired. Yet, despite these assets and potentials, Nigeria’s economy is in distress. Businesses are struggling. This is evident in the alarming number of companies withdrawing from the country.

These exits are symptomatic of deeper economic issues. The inflation rate in Nigeria has skyrocketed to its highest level in years, marking a significant economic challenge for the country. With an inflation rate of 33.95%, an interest rate of 26.25%, and persistent foreign exchange challenges, the business environment in Nigeria is becoming increasingly untenable.

This surge in inflation has been accompanied by a substantial depreciation of the naira, which has reached unprecedented lows

Can we meet you?

I am Aliyu A. Kure, a sociopreneur, digital business innovator, blogger, environmentalist, content creator, digital marketing expert, and serial volunteer.

I hail from Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, and I graduated from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, where I studied Human Kinetics and Health Education (Sport Science).

Tell us about your NGO and what inspired you to start it.

Kure: Our NGO, Lapai Innovation Lab, was founded with the mission to bridge the digital divide in rural communities. The inspiration came from my personal experiences growing up in a rural area where access to technology and digital education was extremely limited.

I realized the transformative power of digital skills and wanted to provide the same opportunities to others. Our goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in the digital age.
