Stop talking about leaders all the time. Why could no one screw up the courage to help a fellow human being in a life and death situation? you missed the point. if they help, Police(which is control by the 'bad' leaders) would say you kill the woman. one of the reasons why we dont have good samaritans anymore. |

Cut the bereaved guy some slack please. Why are they pointing fingers at him?. The woman was a socialite and could have stepped on some wrong toes. In any murder case, the close relative are suspects. This is normal. Another lesson, it pays to have CCTV atleast you can trace back and have evidence to catch the criminals though too late to protect the woman. |

Politics / Unknown Policeman Killed Awosika by busibodi(f): 12:24pm On Apr 18, 2009 |
More revelations emerged yesterday at the on-going inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Modebayo Awosika as the Nigerian Police for the first time admitted that late Awosika was killed by a policeman whose whereabout is still unknown. In his testimony, police investigator, Inspector Patrick Nnadi, attached to the homicide section of CID Panti informed the court that his investigation revealed that late Awosika was shot by a policeman (name unknown) because he (Awosika) failed to stop having rammed into a police vehicle. According to Nnadi, the policeman intended to stop him and aimed at Awosika’s tyre but the bullet missed and hit him on the head, saying “there is no doubt that Awosika was shot, I agreed with the autopsy report.” Nnadi told the court that the policeman that pulled the trigger is still on the run but one of the policemen at the scene has already been charged to court. According to him, on October 2, 2008, he received a call from his boss, one DSP Oberie directing him to retrieve the case file on Awosika’s death from Lion Building. He said when he got to Lion Building he was told that the matter occurred at Lekki roundabout and that it was first reported at Maroko police station. He narrated that as at the time he commenced investigation, Awosika’s body had already been deposited at a military hospital. He added that he was shown the corpse by one Corporal Anthony who deposited the body at the hospital. He told the court that during his investigations he discovered that there was a hole on Awosika’s forehead and that it was decided that the corpse be taken to Lagos Teaching Hospital for autopsy. In his testimony, Col. Godwin Ayuba, a medical doctor at the military hospital, Onikan Lagos informed the court that when the late Awosika was brought to the hospital he was placed on a table with blood all over his head.
Col. Ayuba stated further that on close examination of the body he discovered a small entry on his forehead and a large exit at the back of his head. He said there was no sign of burnt mark on Awosika’s body and that he agreed with the autopsy report that Awosika died as a result of gun wounds.
The matter has been adjourned till April 24 for continuation of hearing The late Awosika was a relationship Manager, with First Bank of Nigeria and was murdered on Tuesday night, September 30, 2008 while driving home. The deceased was allegedly stopped at Lekki expressway round-about by armed Policemen but his body was later found dead the following day. The deceased family members were informed by the Police that he had an accident with his car on his way home but no report was lodged with the Lekki Divisional Police Station which falls within the jurisdiction of the purported accident. Upon visit to the scene of the alleged accident by family members it was observed that no other vehicle was involved in the accident aside that of the deceased. Also when members of the family visited the mortuary at the Military Hospital in Ikoyi, they found that the head of the deceased was badly bartered with holes on his head showing points of entry and exist of an object suspected to be bullets from gun. Politics / The Police Killing Of Baby Kaosarat by busibodi(f): 10:35am On Apr 15, 2009 |
THE unprovoked killing of three-year old Kaosarat Saliu on Sunday, April 5, 2009 by trigger-happy police men at a roadblock at the Alapere area of Lagos once again brings to the fore the unending cases of police brutality against members of the public. Kaosarat's killing is pathetic and heart-breaking. It is one killing too many. The use of brute force that resulted in the death of the innocent girl is most heinous, the manhandling of her helpless parents by the same policemen who had killed her, is condemnable.
The late Kaosarat Saliu was shot around 9.30 pm while in a car returning home with her parents. She had been taken to a hairdressing salon to do her hair in preparation for the celebration of her third birthday anniversary the next day, April 6.
Kaosarat's father, Mr. Murtala Saliu, who was driving the car reportedly slowed down behind a commercial bus on reaching a police checkpoint. As the police were busy searching the bus, Mr. Saliu drove past as he had not been asked to stop. In a matter of seconds, there was a gunshot in the direction of the moving car and the bullet pierced through the back windscreen and hit the girl in the head. She died instantly.
On realising that his daughter had slumped in the pool of her own blood, Mr. Saliu stopped the car, carried the dead girl on his shoulder and rushed back towards the police in a frenzy screaming and shouting that they had killed his daughter. The mother too broke down in tears.
When it dawned on the policemen that the girl was dead, four of them took to their heels in different directions but Mr. Saliu was bold enough to pounce on the fifth and gripped him tightly. Sympathisers who saw what had happened rushed to the scene and assisted in holding the policeman.
But in a dramatic show of force and impunity, the other policemen returned and brandishing their guns, they dispersed the sympathisers. The policemen then commandeered a vehicle that took Mr. Saliu and his wife Ruka to the Alapere Police Station where they were thoroughly beaten and locked up. The police collected the mobile phones of the couple and prevented them from making calls. They were reportedly released following the intervention of the Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba.
Meanwhile, the dead child's body, which the police left on top of the boot of a police car, was removed for autopsy. But the parents refused the move. Mr. Saliu urged the Police Commissioner, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo "to hand over the body for burial without prolonging their anguish". He has also rejected any compensation saying that no amount of money will bring back his daughter. This is understandable given the strange manner in which life was snuffed out of the young girl just some hours before her birthday.
We are here, once again confronted with a case of police brutality. The number of Nigerians who have been sent to their early graves by overzealous and disgruntled policemen is uncountable.
Whereas it is the duty of the police to protect life and property, the same police have turned out to be thorns in the people's flesh. All over the country, the police can be seen carrying guns apparently to check the activities of armed robbers and criminals. But it is innocent citizens that are being killed in many instances. We decry a situation whereby the police kill innocent citizens with impunity, while criminals go about unchallenged. The police authorities should curb the excesses of policemen at checkpoints. The police mount roadblocks where they extort money from motorists. Many people have been killed for failing to part with their money. Often the police fire indiscriminately into loaded commercial buses and private vehicles alike.
In the present instance, the police claim that the gunshot was meant for the commercial bus driver, and not the late Kaosarat. Should the police shoot unarmed citizens, whose only offence may be their refusal to stop at a checkpoint to bribe the police? Is there no professional way of handling fire arms in such a situation, like shooting at the tyres? Would the bullet have pierced through the windscreen to kill the young girl if the policeman had aimed at the tyres?
We disagree with the police spokesman, Frank Mba that the bullet was fired in error. How many times will the police continue to shoot and kill people in error? Are these not supposed to be trained officers?
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mike Okiro had long before now ordered the police to dismantle all checkpoints but this has not happened. We have also in our previous editorials called on the police to dismantle checkpoints within the cities and maintain those on interstate highways but all to no avail. The police insist on mounting illegal roadblocks because it remains a major means of extorting money from the public.
The late Kaosarat's parents insist that they are not interested in any court case. It is incumbent however on the Lagos State Government to institute appropriate legal action to ensure that justice is done. The failure to prosecute previous offenders encouraged fresh killings and police brutality. The policeman who allegedly pulled the trigger has been dismissed from the Force. But that is not enough. He should be arrested and charged to court for murder. NO COMMENT. |
