Health / How The Overweight Can Watch It! by BuzzAss(m): 6:12pm On Jan 09, 2017
The world as it is has different people with different body shapes and sizes, ranging from the very tiny to the plus-size. From time to time, people wish and crave for change; either from being lean to being fatter or from being plus-sized to being lean. We can see mostly the latter everywhere and some would even starve and do the unhealthy things to accomplish what they want. The overweight people are probably doing some things just to be that lean, slim, sexy cheerleader they see on the TV but while at this, they have to take note of some common mistakes they make during the quest.

Skip Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and shouldn’t be missed for anything. Unless one is fasting, skipping breakfast can hinder weight loss. Overweight or not, a great meal might not sustain you for the rest of the day but would save you from consuming too many “unnecessary” snacks at lunch. Just make sure you start your day with a meal, especially one rich in protein, fats and fibre.

Nairaland / General / The Real Change: Jet-age From Olden-age by BuzzAss(m): 2:13pm On Jan 08, 2017
Welcome to the jet age where parents and teen children discuss about their teen love and laugh over it, where parents pushes their kids to meet up, hang out with their crush and calls it building up courage in them or dealing with timidity. Aren’t you glad to be part of the age where a “boy” recommends crazy s*x styles to the adults and say stuffs that his parents (old-age) might not even have a clue about? Wait! Haven’t you heard this is the generation where daughters give their mothers a gist of how it all went with their teen love? Yes! This is the generation we are talking about!

I kept thinking about how so much as changed and how so many of today’s young parents were denied of this life while they were young. I threw the discussion into a WhatsApp group starting with my own experience. I just laughed and kept rolling on the floor.

There used to be this guy on my street, I had just finished my secondary education from a boarding school and hardly knew ten people on my street. Dude was cousin to a childhood friend and I never knew him. He was interested in me, teen love sturvs and I was only interested in gaining admission into a higher institution.

Romance / Ladies, Money And Relationships by BuzzAss(m): 2:02pm On Jan 08, 2017
There’s so much going around about how much ladies love money than the man they’re with. It’s gotten to a point where I’ve got to admit this truly that ladies love money, I mean, look around and you’ll see it too but then who doesn’t? Men don’t? Oh! Please don’t give me the “it’s because of women” talk. It is simple and so easy to understand that everyone craves a good life and I can’t blame anyone for that.

However, one thing isn’t clear, how did we get here? To the “no sex, no spending…no spending, no touching”? An average guy would be interested in a girl and would spend so much to entice the lady into dating him or just having sex with him and gradually it’s turned a norm. Why not just get on a fresh slate of not showing off or spending more than necessary to a girl at first, let her go if she would. I’m sure not all ladies would do the “money-in-hand-me-on-ground” some would actually agree to have sex with you without getting anything if you play your game well, doesn’t have to be that you give a lady something and you want to be repaid with sex, it’s so sick. You want the kind of girl that would leave you for a richer guy as soon as she’s being lavished on by another cute guy? Then get a lady using money!

Foreign Affairs / ECOWAS Deadline And The Possibility Of Resolving Gambia’s Crisis by BuzzAss(m): 1:55pm On Jan 08, 2017
Chairperson of the of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State and Government and the Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in her address at the 50th Ordinary Session of the Authority and Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Abuja issued a deadline for the resolution of the political logjam in Gambia.

Sirleaf also noted that the progress made by the ECOWAS Mission led by her to Gambia on December 13, to mediate in the logjam was successful, but stressed that the will of the people as expressed through their votes in the December 1, must be respected.

Gambia conducted a presidential election on the 1st of December 2016. The election saw the opposition candidate, Adama Barrow defeating the incumbent president, Yahya Jammeh. Shortly after the election the incumbent president conceded defeat. However, on December 10, Jammeh rescinded his concession and called for a fresh election. His reason was that the outcome of the election wasn’t truly the will of the citizens of Gambia.

Romance / How Important Is Sex In A Relationship? by BuzzAss(m): 10:03am On Jan 07, 2017
I was having a conversation with friends a few days ago, we discussed a variety of topics and everyone shared his/her opinion. Then at a point, when we were discussing “relationship”, a lady asked “how important is sex in a relationship”? The question was an interesting one, so everyone was eager to contribute. Answers were funny and silly, but it all revolved around “very important”. I wasn’t satisfied with the answers I heard, because most of us took it as a joke, I had to hear another person's opinion. I went to ask a ‘more experienced’ sister.

She was of the opinion that the answer to this will be particular to the individual and will vary according to age, current sexual satisfaction or deprivation, and life particulars at the time the question is posed. My conclusion from her submission is that it all depends….

Health / How To Be Safe From Fruits Ripened With Calcium Carbide by BuzzAss(m): 1:18pm On Jan 04, 2017
Calcium carbide (CaC2) is a chemical widely used for artificial ripening of fruits. This chemical contains arsenic and phosphorous, both which could be fatal in the human body. Over the years, this chemical which is suspected to be carcinogenic has been in use in some countries especially the Asian countries but recently impatience has made the force-pon that is force-ripening practice common in Nigeria. The rate at which we consume fruits that weren’t left to come to ripening terms has skyrocketed so much and people are still not informed about this practice.

CaC2 is said to be carcinogenic –it can alter human cell into cancerous cells –in other words, cause the very dreadful cancer. NAFDAC, biko where una dey?

Romance / Big Cassava Or Cucumber? Ariwo Ko! by BuzzAss(m): 1:30pm On Jan 03, 2017
Cassava is a food. A root crop which is widely consumed either directly or indirectly after being processed. Cucumber however is a highly nutritious and wonderful vegetable fruit that most people include in their diet recently. Carrot is also a root vegetable highly rich in vitamins especially vitamins A and then the carotene. Do you actually know the goodness banana fruit also possess? I bet you know how sweet sugar cane can be.

All these food items have suddenly been given another meaning by this generation of omo wobes and its appalling since we don’t know how many more food would join the list tomorrow. The musicians aren’t making it any easier as from time to time we hear them use these foods in their lyrics and it’s so scary that soon, the next generation might define a cucumber as the rod used by a lady to satisfy her sexual urge at the absence of a man to do the job… yeah, it’s that scary!

Politics / Can APC Survive The Rumoured Mega Party by BuzzAss(m): 2:29pm On Jan 01, 2017
News broke out some few weeks ago that the Ahmed Makarfi’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party and aggrieved chieftains of the All Progressives Congress which included Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had intensified efforts aimed at forming a mega opposition party. It was even reported that those proposing the mega party were considering adopting any of the existing political parties as their platform and may announce the party before the end of March, 2017.

Tinubu’s inclusion in the mega party plot wasn’t a surprise. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the APC and the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari. But his political clout has been increasingly curtailed as forces within the party realign ahead of the 2019 election. He even openly demanded the resignation of the party’s chairman, John Oyegun, after his candidate for the Ondo State governorship election lost to a candidate supported by Mr. Oyegun and President Buhari.

Romance / Why Do Men Cheat? by BuzzAss(m): 10:32am On Dec 30, 2016
Cheating in a relationship is unfortunately gradually becoming a norm in our society. Even among (married) couples, cheating is still prevalent with men being the major culprits…. That doesn’t mean the women don’t cheat as well.

For some women, they find cheating very difficult. This is because they are usually more committed in the relationship. An average lady (in a relationship) feels her mind already belongs to her man. Her body professed to him she loved him in the presence of her family, friends and her colleagues. She won’t even hesitate to flaunt her relationship on her social media handles.

But for an average man, he is quite aware of the damage getting caught might do to his relationship, but won’t still back out from it. He knows that it would take herculean efforts to win back his woman back (that’s if she would accept him back), but “men would be men”, they love the “adventure".

Politics / Can The 2017 Budget Lift Nigeria Out Of Recession? by BuzzAss(m): 2:51pm On Dec 28, 2016
When we heard our economy has entered recession, most of us gave the “what does that got to do with me” reaction. The few that cared were optimistic that it would end pretty soon and things will get better, they gave us hope that in a few months or so, everything will be just fine. Fast forward to the present day Nigeria, recession is still here, getting stronger.

Millions of Nigerians are currently feeling the heat of “recession”. Some analysts are even of the opinion that aside the recession of 1980-1989, it is becoming worrisome that the current recession may end up becoming the most devastating of all. Considering all indices and abortive attempts by the government to arrest the situation, it’s becoming clear that the government has no idea. No idea of how to make to make the recession stop.

You don’t need a degree in any economy related profession to know the effect of economy recession. Just take a trip to the market and compare the prices of commodity to what it was about six (6) months ago. The price(s) of commodities has gone up by about 300% or even more!

Politics / 5 Good Things That Comes With Recession by BuzzAss(m): 4:01pm On Oct 14, 2016
The title of this post sounds counter-intuitive, that’s what you thought, and I agree totally. However, if you can take a minute to follow through, you will probably agree with me that the current recession in Nigeria has got some silver lining with it, even though many have not seen it yet; and many will not see it.

Just like it was said of Jesus in the Bible “No good thing comes out of Nazareth”, and that was until Jesus. Same applies to recession. Many of us have not been able to see any good thing about the recession we are going through in this country. I however believe that by the time you are done with reading this, you will see those good things, with the hope that they will help change your perspective to things, to the opportunities that surround recession.

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
― Winston S. Churchill
The media is currently filled with bad news. Everyone is talking about how the price of a bag of rice has skyrocketed and how many have lost their jobs. We turn on our TVs for Network News at 10PM and all we hear is how things have gotten worse for the economy. The government is considering selling assets, many businesses have shut down or fled the country to neighboring countries to stay afloat, husbands are beating their wives as response to the request for more money to provide food in the home, kidnappings on the rise, and the list goes. If this is all you listen to, you will hardly see the silver lining in the cloud of recession.

For those who will not mind to shift their focus from what is, just for a while, I am sure it won’t be hard for you to see these good things that come with recession.

Recession births creativity
Do you want to see creativity at its peak? Wait till people are in crisis, like recession. It’s simple. If you are faced with extinction, your brains kick in and start working better. Your thoughts are now directed to how to stay alive. You start looking for opportunities and learn to let go of things that don’t add value. A good example is my wife, she started making bread at home and we stopped buying bread. She also stopped buying pure water and started boiling water for us to drink. That’s creativity. If everything was going fine, she wouldn’t have thought of that.

Health / BAD Alert: Things You Should Know About Bipolar Affective Disorder by BuzzAss(m): 8:29pm On Oct 13, 2016
For a number of times, I’ve seen the word “bipolar” and I just assume its double (bi) of some physics term (polar- pole)…yeah, I know it’s unwise to assume and not know for sure but isn’t that how many of us are?

Even as an educated literate, I recently knew about bipolar as a disorder through the blockbuster, additive movie series “Empire” and also from a fictional story (Clueless) authored by Tomi Adesina. This movie and book make me want to tell as many people about Bipolar.

What Then Is Bipolar?

Bipolar Affective Disorder (BAD) is a type of mood disorder. It is characterized basically by periods of mood elevation (peaks) and depression (valleys). The period of mood elevation is called the manic phase; coined from mania. During this period, the individual is hyperactive, energetic and over excited even insomnia (not sleeping) for days. At this phase they could lose things as a result of being impulsive.

Just after the manic phase, the valley (depression) phase follows. This phase is characterized by opposite of the manic phase, the individual at this time reflect on what they did while manic, which often leads to self-loathe and feelings of hopelessness. As exact opposite of manic periods, they may never want to leave the bed.

BAD Can Run In Families

There seem to be a genetic link, the cause hasn’t been confirmed. Like in the “honey-sweet” series Empire, Lucious’ mother had Bipolar Affective Disorder and somehow, one of his sons, Andre got BAD too, well, that’s genetics!

Is The Bad BAD Really Treatable?

Yes, BAD is totally treatable. Only that the individual has to do more than taking a few pills every day. The treatment is basically divided into three;

The Psychotherapy, as in the psychological therapy where the individual discusses feelings, thoughts, and behavior that causes them problems. The therapy includes, behavioural therapy, cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, and social rhythm therapy.

The Medicotherapy, as in medical therapy where the specialist after diagnosis give pills for daily use to the individual.

The Electroconvulsive therapy, also known as the ECT or electroshock therapy, is a short term treatment for severe manic or depressive episodes especially when the symptoms are becoming suicidal or when medicines seem to be ineffective. The electric current is passed through the scalp to cause brief seizure in the brain. When symptoms are so severe and it is unsafe to wait for drug effects, ECT is often the treatment for BAD.

However, a person with BAD should know much about it and be actively involved in its treatment. Be open with close friends and family that is trusted about the illness.

What To Do To Improve The Symptoms?

Good lifestyle choices are best for improving symptoms of BAD. Late nights, lack of sleep, too much alcohol, or drugs can precipitate a manic or depressive episode. Exercise everyday. Minimize stress. Keep a regular sleep schedule and avoid alcohol, drugs and smoking.

Sunlight is the ultimate mood lifter; get a little of it every day!

Health / National #nobraday: For The Hate Of Breast Cancer by BuzzAss(m): 8:21pm On Oct 13, 2016
I used to have a girlfriend who wears like two layers of underwear before wearing her clothes. The bra goes first, then followed by a corset and then the clothes. I sometimes wonder, don’t you feel hot inside all of these? Considering the part of the world where we are from, the hustle and bustle of the day generate a lot of heat and even if I wasn’t told, I know that these babes feel hot deep beneath. Who would have thought today that we will be talking about NoBra day today.

A whole lot of folks don’t know what the nobra thing is all about. I am guilty. I probably wouldn’t have known if I didn’t have to write this. Some of us just think it’s a day of lets-free-our-nipples but it goes past that. It’s a day dedicated to raise breast cancer awareness among women.

While most celebrities in the western world, likes of Rihanna, Amber rose and Jennifer Aniston enjoy their lives without a bra, around here in Naija, don’t feel bad if someone looks at you with “one-kind” eye if you go braless.

The National #Nobraday awareness started back in October 2011. Currently, October 13 has been accepted as the annual nobra day, to sensitize women in Nigeria about the wicked breast cancer that has stolen the lives of many women from all across the world.

Breast cancer, which was seen before as a plague peculiar to developed nations, is fast finding its way into developing nations. According to World Health Organization (WHO), about 50% of cancer cases and 58% of deaths from these cancer cases happened in less developed nations. This makes the plague a no-respecter of status or location, it ravages and destroys as it wills.

The risks associated with breast cancer are ample and worse still, many don’t even know they have it until it has gotten to advanced stages. This is why it is recommended that all women above the age of 50 go for periodic medical check-ups as early detection appears to be the only way to beat this culprit.

African walnuts, known as Asala or Awusa in Yoruba, Ukpa in Igbo and Okhue or Okwe in Edo belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae.

The African walnuts are characterized by a thick wall that envelopes a white-creamed seed. Its seed kernel is edible. When eaten raw, they have a bitter flavor not unlike the kolanut and are considered to be tonic and aphrodisiac.

Aside appetite quenching, the African walnut is a highly versatile nut. Walnuts are rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, fiber, health fats, plant sterols and antioxidants.

Health / Is Sugar Really That Bad For Your Health? by BuzzAss(m): 6:20am On Oct 09, 2016
As a man, eating sugar and maybe just a bit of it is considered a taboo of some sort.

I love chilled soft drinks and many times, despite the warnings from friends and family, I always fell into the trap of taking them.

But sometimes, I keep pondering on something.

Is sugar really that bad for our health?

There are lot of bad guys in town when it comes to food. We’ve got alcohol and now, it’s sugar.

Many who includes health professionals and experts have labeled it a “poison” that’s “killing us”.

But again, I keep wondering why sugar has never wiped away our early men who lived on raw fruits and grains that are mainly made of sugar and it major derivative – carbohydrates.

“We actually need sugar; it’s our body’s preferred fuel,” says David Katz, MD, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. “But we eat too damn much of it.”

But again, the question is this.

Are we really eating too much of sugar and is eating too much of sugar really a bad one or a dead sentence?

To answer the first question of “are we really eating too much of sugar?”, let’s take a look at the sugar component of common foods which includes fruits, vegetable and grains.

Rice is a common stable food in this side of the world and almost everyone including my 3 year niece know that it’s a Carbohydrate (basic elementary school science) and it’s made mainly of sugar.
Surprisingly beyond my own expectations, out of a 195g serving of cooked rice, only 45g which is like 23% of the whole components is carbohydrate and out of that, we have a mere 0.7g as sugar.

But wait a second!

Elementary science made us realize the fact that when carbohydrate is ingested, our body breaks it down into simple units out of which consist of sugar and this means we get more sugar after eating rice than we have before eating it.

But away from rice.

Beans is all a common stable food around and unlike rice, it has so many derivatives like moin-moin, bean balls popularly called Akara, “ekuru” for the Yoruba folks and many more like that.
Beans contains more carbohydrate than rice and even more sugar but why do we all see beans as a protein based food when it has more carbohydrate and sugar than rice that is considered a carbohydrate?

Maybe that will be a point of discussion for another day.

And what about our common fruits and vegetable?

Romance / Good Bye To Old School: Meet The New School Of Sexual Relationships by BuzzAss(m): 6:06am On Oct 09, 2016
It’s the new cool, crazy craziness it is.

In this period of animate existence, crazy things seem to be fun, and it is what we wallow in.

Indiscriminately, people mostly youths just follow trends, move along with the whirlwind of westernization totally forgetting or ignoring the root, our source which used to be affluently rich in culture, values, and beliefs and we gleefully follow the trend without questioning the craziness going around but then why would they question what they love especially when it’s the new sexy?

Ad nauseam, I’ve seen people get involve with the opposite sex and they have nothing, like absolutely nothing to justify their actions of having a fling. Just when I thought I’ve heard the craziest thing in my life, my shock absorber malfunctioned the day I heard a young lady say to her friend in “defense”, ”

it’s nothing serious, you know na…just to feel cool

” when her friend attacked her for the hanky-panky with a family man that happens to live the flat opposite hers.

That day, every cell, tissue, organ, system, blood, bones in short every part of me screamed silently as I took a quick glance at the speaker.

She isn’t a hooker, or LovePeddler to say, she’s typically young, “good” mannered like from older people’s view, beautiful to behold and of course I knew of her relationship which at that time I could term “serious”.

Did I forget to add that she’s a Christian in fact, a dedicated worker in one of the biggest ministries we have in the country.

Couldn’t help but ask myself over and over, “what was cool in having a little on the side with someone else’s husband or wife just for the fun of it?”

Agitated, disturbed deep down in my spirit, I decided to ask a friend “where has the sacredness and piety of sex gone?” And he replied,

“babes, I’m sure you know sometimes you just don’t wanna feel attached, you just want a “do-and-go” fun, or be relieved of the urge or probably you’re just sexually attracted to the person. It’s called casual sex, it’s nothing jor!”

And I just watched bewildered as he went on explaining.

Politics / What The Heck Is Recession? The Meaning Of Recession To A Common Nigerian by BuzzAss(m): 2:08pm On Oct 08, 2016
Is Nigeria Really in Recession?

I woke up one morning and turned on the radio and all I heard was “Nigeria is in Recession” and really, I wasn’t bothered because it never really got to me. God knows I don’t know what that means. I stepped out shortly after and the headlines of the newspapers were saying the same thing “The National Bureau of Statistics has officially confirmed that Nigeria is in Recession!”

What the heck is Recession anyway? A typical Nigerian who is not economically or politically inclined may not know what that means, people like me who only care about their day to day lives.

Now there are government indices that show that an economy is in recession or let’s call it, a “backward movement”. An economy is said to be improving if it’s moving forward. These movements are measured with indices such as the GDP value, the interest of international investors, increased employment rates, lower inflation rates etc. However, most of us don’t even know what that means. So this write up is not really for the so called change vending government cohorts and those smart guys who are said to make up our economic team who we trust to know everything about economics and politics, it’s for a nobody like you and I who is just crying out there, “What really is recession?”

There are a couple of things a typical Nigerian is feeling right now which are all fallouts of the recession the country is said to be in. Let’s break this down.

Job Losses

How many of you have lost your jobs this year? Can I get witness? Yeah, sure! I know probably more than half of you reading this right now had lost their jobs. This is one major sign of recession – when companies can no longer hold on to their staff because business is not as usual anymore.

Banks are one of the highest employers of labour in Nigeria. It may interest you to know that more than 5,000 people have lost their jobs within the last 6 months in Nigeria alone. Skye bank laid off 175 employees, Ecobank dropped 1,040 and Diamond Bank sent away 200 workers, out of many others. Many more are still being laid off. Now we are not even talking about other companies that have completely folded up and have taken to their heels. Worse still, many people were laid off without benefits. I am one of them and this is where it got to me, recession already hit!

Here is another angle. The Oil company workers were the biggest boys in town. Remember how we look at our friends in Shell, Chevron, Mobil, Schlumberger, Total etc. with complete envy because of the amount of money they earn monthly? Do you remember? It will shock you to know that more than 60% of these guys have either lost their jobs or are on very ridiculous income right now as we speak. You want to know why? It is simple, Nigeria is in recession!
