Refined gentleman?

You obviously know zilch about the man, his background or his policies.

You can call him a refined "agbero" though

You may not like his politics, but the man is a proper gentleman

Labour are in utter shambles at the moment, she's taking advantage of this and if this gets the sign off Tories will win by a landslide, Labour will not win this with Corbyn on the forefront

True, but Labour losing this round will at least see to it that Corbyn is removed from leadership.

Labour will be better positioned for 2020

Romance / Re: For Single Guys Above 30 And Single Ladies Above 25 by cptshiver: 12:41pm On Apr 17, 2017
Are there any single naija girls based in the UK?

Finding love here is seriously hard, with the snobbish attitude of most people.
Travel / Nigerians In The UK, How Do You Socialise by cptshiver: 1:05am On Apr 12, 2017
For UK based Nigerians, i am interested to learn from your experience on the best ways to socialise. Where do you go to meet other Nigerians and build a circle of friends?

I know people here mind their business a lot, but for some of us that don't have families here, it can be very difficult. Please share your experience.

@Justwise, will be grateful if this can make frontpage so as to get more opinion.

many thanks.

Business / Re: Can CBN Sustain The Black Market Onslaught? by cptshiver: 1:02pm On Mar 05, 2017
papiforreal:

Don't be naive, the real value of the naira (something called the Real Exchange Rate) is between 300-350 ₦ per $ and that's exactly why the CBN is holding out at that rate. The present rate is only down to the insidious activities of speculators and once the CBN demonstrates an ability to meet $ demand for a few weeks (which they now can as they've miraculously built up the reserves to about $29b), speculators will pack their bags and leave the Naira alone, then, we'll see the naira settle at its true rate.
Everything now depends on how patient currency hoarders are and how long the CBN can nourish the market, the first to blink losses. If speculators blink first, then the Naira will appreciate further as hoarders offload their stock leading to an oversupply but if the CBN blinks first, something that's sure to happen if the reserves begin to plunge below $25-20billion, then expect the naira to depreciate to at least ₦600 as speculators become enboldened seeing nothing but a hapless Central Bank.
The funniest part of all these is seeing Nigerians curse and cry because the Naira is making gains and they're about to suffer marginal losses! Which way my people? Some are already praying the intervention fails and have already resorted to hoarding, anticipating the CBN's failure. I ask again, which way my people? I thought a stronger Naira is desirable? Have you guys thought of the knock-on effects of a sudden fall in the exchange rate to the wider economy? It might take some time but trust me, a healthier overall economy is way more beneficial than the extra ₦50 you'll make per $.

At about 320 to the dollar, Nigeria's real effective exchange rate is closer to 97 which would mean that it is fairly valued at this price. But that is only if you truly believe the official statistics that inflation is close to 18.72%. Of course, this is nonsense. Inflation is much higher than this

That said, the best way to value a country's currency is at a liquid market of willing buyers and sellers. In Nigeria, this is the black market. Every single dollar that is being sold out by the CBN will eventually end up here where it is traded for its "true" value. There is a simple logic to this. The black market is the true market, where supply and demand is accurately gauged. Why should banks agree to sell dollars provided to them by the CBN for less than what they can sell it for at the black market? Why would a foreign investor agree to exchange his USD for Naira for a rate that is lower than what he can obtain at the black market?

This process will continue until the supply of foreign exchange in the black market outstrips its demand.

For now, the CBN is simply playing 2019 politics.

I agree with your points but this particular point, I think it is necessary to have visa as requirement to do business in another country. Without it, we will have influx of some foreigners manufacturing substandard products and tracing them will be difficult because such policy wasn't on ground before.

What I feel is necessary is to make the visa barrier more flexible for genuine investors.

You can be selective in removing visa barriers. There's nothing wrong with an influx of swiss//german//british//american//japan immigrants etc.

This is how you introduce valid technical skills into a country that lacks it.

Very Hilarious Reading comments. Those making money in dollars are calling it bad policy because it shortens their ration. People can be so self centered.

No, it's not being self centred. You are thinking of this from an extremely narrow point of view. The central bank can push more dollars into the economy if it wants, but this is not a sustainable long term strategy. It will improve the value of the naira - but only for the short term (max 3-4 months) then we will be back to square one again. Even worse, we will be back to a point where the Central bank now has fewer dollars, and demand for dollars is still rising.

It doesn't make any sense to pursue policies that are only short term in nature.

Nice analysis bro. Like I said this policy will not be sustainable for long. However floating the naira may lead to serious devaluation as it may trade for N1000 against a dollars. We need a new strategy that will keep things in balance.
You can float the naira.

Think about it this way. There are only three possible means of having more dollars in the economy

a) Increase exports

b) Increase foreign portfolio inflows

c) Cut back on wasteful spending

Option A -

Currently we only truly export commodities, this is not going to change within the next 12 years. Nigeria is not going to turn into an industrial manufacturing giant within the next decade. The workforce is poorly trained, infrastructure are poorly developed, and several other things that a necessary are not in place.

Option B--

This is the only viable option for now. However, foreign investors have stopped investing in Nigeria because of liquidity issues. They simply can't withdraw their money when they need it. This is precisely why some airlines have also withdrawn from the country. The best way to fix this is to allow a freely floated currency, but to put incentives in place that will keep foregin investors here.
Some of those incentives include

1) Increase local real interest rates - Considering that rates across the developed markets are abysmally low, this is an immediate option
2) Improving law enforcement
3) Make the country an easier place to do business (e.g by removing barriers such as visa)
4) Bring regulatory standards closer to international standards. Nigeria companies should be required to publish financial statements that are strictly in line with international norms with heavy penalties for those who refuse to do so
5) Spend more on infrastructure.

Russia spent $75billion trying to defend the Ruble in 2015 and the currency still ended that year close to 13% weaker. I don't know where our central bankers get their wisdom from.

Introduce a free float and let us know the true value of the Naira. From that point, we will know it cannot get any worse than it will get.

Exactly!

This is just another of the numerous silly measures being doled out by the incompetents running this country. Every USD that is pushed into the CBN invariably ends up on the black market where it is sold for its true value. The Central Bank cannot surely continue this indefinitely.

The Central Bank should implement a free float and immediately hike local real interest rates. This is the only solution, every other measure is simply postponing the eventual pain to come.

This shows that the OP is very dishonest and not someone you want to do business with. I hate it when you can't take men for their word!

No one is going to beat you if you had said the car was not yours and was being sold on the behalf of someone else.

ALternatively, if your friends, cousins, sisters etc are single - that works too! This is serious stuff guys!
