One point people seem to be missing in all this international student discussion is that regardless of your status today, so long you came in with a visa, you are not different from the international students the government and its fans are portraying as opportunists and leeches.

If you came via a family visa, you must have switched your status from dependent of ILR holder or British citizen before you have your permanent residence, and maybe to citizenship later.

If you came on a work visa, you must have done the same.

If you came as a refugee, you must have claimed asylum and then have your application granted before you had your stay.

So, does that make you entitled, leeches, a burden to the system, an opportunist?

The same thing most settled migrants in the UK did is what international students are doing today.

They came with a student visa, applied for PSW and were granted because the govt deemed them qualified, and if they feel like switching to a Skilled Worker visa thereafter, and then to ILR much after, it is still all the same process followed by every migrant today.

So, it is unfair making it look like they are migrating through the backdoor. The only people who might deserve to be vilified are those staying illegally.

So, where is this narrative of "they are trying to stay indefinitely comes from"?

I agree that the government has to do what they think is the best for their country, but they can do it without stigmatizing those who committed absolutely no offence.

Immigrant vs. non immigrant visa

The UK government is simply very confused...... You cannot tweak the law, collect their application fees, but not want the individuals.......

When next they decide to tweak immigration laws, they should have Nigerian, Indian and Chinese consultants on their board .......... (not just fresh oyinbo grads)........🤣😛😜

They call it legal route to illegal migration. We all know that the main purpose of a large percentage of people who come to school is not to come to school but to japa. 9t 8s not illegal but is hitting them negatively in immigration figures so I guess they are adjusting to the situation.

Thanks to the YouTube guys and all the people that overdo these things, they are getting to know the loopholes are plugging them.

Article I stumbled across, not just Nigerians. I'm sure they will come for care companies shortly

Their country, their laws. If the UK says they don't want immigrants they are entitled to do that. I read some posts and I all I see is entitlement. They do not owe anybody anything. they make the guidelines, if you are happy to go along then good else there are other countries you can migrate to.

I don't know why some of you bothered to type all these long story, you do not travel to another country to live and work with just one month rent. Its a silly gamble which is likely to backfire as this case has proved

I really don't give toilet brush about how people decide to read and interpret my post, we can't run away from reality.

With all the information on this thread about how care companies are not giving their workers shift and you decide to come and take your chances and not bring enough buffer then it is your fault. Expect no sympathies from jw.

It's all politics. But, hey, who doesn't want to remain in power. No 10 is a sweet tener!

One challenge though with the post on coursementor, it appears to be like those desperate 9ja blog! #sensational
One will not the the 'emphasis' on Tier 4 and Tier 2!!
The reality is that the conditions of Tier 2 ain't same as Skilled Worker, nor those of Tier 4 the same as Student visa.
For noting, YouKay Gov does not list student visa as one of the restricted visa type for switching to Skilled Worker. https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa/switch-to-this-visa

Well it popped up on my feed and decided to share. Better to be informed, thsts why I added a "do your checks" caveat for is planning to do this.

I believe it will. Also if HTB comes back. This govt is heavily invested in keeping house prices high, and as the market is stalling due to interest rate rises, new measures are being brought in to shore up it up.

The way these guys think. You would think they cared about the ftb and want them to achieve home ownership but like you pointed out aim is to keep house prices high for whatever reasons. Then to avoid or reduce backlash they come out with the only available for people who have a history of rent payment. Also using that as a some sort of hegde against potential defaulters via means of a 'pseudo credit check'- if you can pay rent you can pay mortgage.

Likewise lol. It's looking like this might set a standard for new age non-guarantor 100% mortgages, although I don't think we'll ever return to the days of Norther Rock style >100% mortgages

I think I read somewhere the APR will be a 6 percenter

Interesting - I suspect they will cap borrowing to a % below current rent in order to limit risk and enforce an affordability buffer...

EDIT

Just seen that the product has launched today. APR not bad - fixed IR 5.49

The criteria don't look too onerous:

All applicants are first-time buyers.
Each applicant is 21 years old or older.
You have less than a 5% deposit.
You seek to borrow up to £600,000.
You satisfy the household-to-household criteria.
You are not purchasing a new build flat.
You can provide evidence of 12 consecutive months of rent payments within the last 18 months.
All applicants have maintained a clean payment record on debts and credit commitments (e.g., mobile phone bills) for the past 6 months.
You have a history of paying all household bills (e.g., utility bills, council tax, etc.) for a minimum of 12 consecutive months within the past 18 months.
The new monthly mortgage payments will have to be equal to or less than the monthly rent that applicants have been paying.

Won't this 100% mortgage drive up demand thereby leading to increase in house prices?

Sweetheart. Nothing annoys me more than someone’s who’s been lucky not understanding others pains OR making it look like others aren’t hardworking/lucky enough. I’m one of the most privileged and lucky Nigerians in the Uk, worked just 4 years here and on 140k all before 30 but I never act like others aren’t working hard enough or lucky enough or feel their pain. I’m the exception, not the rule.

Because I exist doesn’t meant others don’t. Because you can’t relate doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be empathetic/sympathetic neither does it allow you to discount the pain is the majority.

And for someone that steadily recruits my profession, 80% of corporate companies don’t sponsor due to fear or lack of understanding of the regulations. So unless someone is applying to the big 4 or top IT, NHS or govt.. there’s likely no sponsorship.

Ok.

Congrats on your 3 offers.

She is back!

140k!!! Will you marry me?!!!

You are not really the owner of your property because of tax. Property tax is something else.

Child support payment na another thing on its own- if you like woman, please be careful not to have many baby mama e get why.

Nigerians back home cannot understand until they come here and experience themselves.

I remember when my cousin was warning me about the Uk. I thought he was talking nonsense until I came and experienced reality. Experience is the best teacher
If you are doing well in Naija, please stay and visit. If you are struggling, then please Japa.

I want to assume what you mean by property tax is the equivalent of council tax in the UK. Nobody likes money going out of their pocket so they will always complain. Do you know what this money goes to? Garbage collection, street lights, public parks, libraries, schools, social services, community centers, street cleaning, clear snow on the roads during winter, etc. Imagine if UK citizens don't pay for these things, imagine the chaos. Would there be anything for all of you who want to come and visit to see. I would rather pay and get these things highlighted above than live in a chaotic society. If you don't get this services all you need to do is pick up the phone to complain and you will get a response/something will be done about it. If you are not satisfied with the performance of the council leaders vote them out in the elections and if you feel you can do better, you can run for election, I'm sure you see Nigerians who run and become public officers 8n the UK, and you don't need a godfather.

The way we jump to conclusions on this thread ehn. It's amazing.

Who knows if the man is asking about being arrested because he's worried about what his immigration status would be once the divorce process begins?

This thread dey be like soap opera with the gist, twists and turns sometimes.

Wife: I am not feeling supported, let's get divorce

Husband: ok

Nairalanders: it's domestic violence

Life in the UK.

Make we dey catch cruise, I write my own twist:

Husband and wife move to the UK. Wife meets her old university ex, who is driving a lexus gs430 and seems to be doing well in the UK with permanent residence. Ex wants to continue where they left off.
Meanwhile husband is struggling to make ends meet and doing a minimum wage job that British people will not do and cannot meet all of wife's needs. Wife looking for an easy way to a better life, eets husband and says I want a divorce I don't feel supported. Husband knows the scores, it's a lose lose for him so to avoid stories that touch he agrees.....
I don get writers block ooooo

Eniola1010 is right. The longer one waits (to save up the deposit), the higher the house prices goes (well, ought to). Just like that Fela song about saving for the fan.
Ultimately, it's about putting a foot at the (property) ladder/door
@Deept, your point is valid. It's crucial for people to understand the higher the deposit, the less the total amount repaid (and possibility of negotiating lower mortgage rate). To reduce total amount repaid over the period, one can make a conscious effort to pay in 'extra' £ to the mortgage (of course, watching out for early settlement penalty, some refer to early repayment charge or early redemption charge especially if one is on fixed mortgage).

[Edit] I see @Ticha just explain early repayment. A good take that links it to 'surplus'. Thanks ma.

Another point could be interest rates. When we switched mortgages two years ago the best we could get was around 3% so we decided to fix for two years. Interest rates rates that period was quite low with people getting 1.7% etc. We did two years thinkingg before you know it time would be up and we would be able to get lower rates but.....Russia invaded Ukraine, cost of energy went up, cost of living crises, BOE interest rate now 4.25% might go up this month again. Fixed term Is over I'm in sifia pains paying double the interest this month compared to last month on my mortgage.

Get all the education you can, get all the information you can. Lime they say best ttime to plant a tree was yesterday, next best time is today.if an opportunity come take it. The person with 5% deposit could potentially be paying less interest if he had taken is mortgage 2 years ago compared to someone with 30% equity with today's rate.

I dont know if i am missing something. But why is everyone fighting for lenders giving as low as 5% deposit, that means lender will be giving u as much as 95% ltv. Do we understand that the lower ur deposit, the more you'll end up paying as interest and the longer you will pay interest?

Why arent we fighting to have enough cash to pay deposit, so we can pay as much as 30% deposit?

Abi am i wrong mathematically

This thing sometimes is like playing kalo kalo. House prices does not wait for anyone. It takes a lot to save the 5% not to talk of 30% considering the cost of living.
By the time you have the 30%, the cost of houses could have gone up and your 30% would amount to less and the person that bought with 5% would have more than 5% equity because his borrowing is still same. Life is time and chance, prayer is that our decisions favour us in the long run.

This argument or debate has been done in the past and it always ends in a stalemate. Points have been noted, positions have been taken, people have been educated or not. It will just continue to drag on and on.

There was a guy years ago who argued that Nigeria was the best place to invest, that was even when things were better and people came and gave experiences, arguements etc but he stood his ground. I don't think I have seen him here in years hope he is ok. Everybody's experience will be different and people do what's best for them and their situation.

My dear that is not how it works, you don't put a price tag on your husband, most successful marriages today didn't start with wealth, most wealthy people today didn't get married as rich men, so don't look at their comfort today and think it has been like that all their lives.

Some started small and grow with the support of their spouses. Go and look for a hard working man with prospect and marry, when I got married my spouse was just managing a Small job, even without a car of our own, but today we live in our own house with several other properties and earnings is far more than what you just asked for.

Don't be deceived

My dear,

how many single men make the amount she asked for? That is why they all run after married men. And the single men that make said amount of money know they are in high demand and have a lot of choices/options so go about sleeping with all of them and breaking hearts. These ones never wake up to reality
