Pavore9:

The nearer you are to your market the better. Lagos offers market at different levels. I streamed online this morning listening to Fidelity bank's SME radio show. I was inspired by the resource person who co-own greenhouse based farm, owned by two well educated and widely travelled women with strong corporate backgrounds, having worked in the U.S, Canada, UK, France, Singapore etc. They even brought in a Kenyan who is a guru in greenhouse farming to work for them. They know their target market is upscale shopping centres, thus applying international standards in their operations in their farm there in Lagos.

What is your projected scale of operation? Who is your target market? These should influence your decision-making.

@pavere9 can you please share you the link for that particular interview.

jethro2:
My main crux is let intending farmers know what they are venturing into. Except you are processing and you have a ready made market, dont venture into cassava farming.
Starch processors are making cool dough right away. A mini standard processing unit cost not less than N10,000,000, equipment alone.
How many farmers can go close?
Even the starch has quality standard requirement. One cant just fabricates or import machineries that will not give the expected result.

Can you kindly through more light into the above quoted subject matter.

What are the set of Equipments required for a standard acceptable starch plant.
Which of the Country is this machine coming from and whats the production output.
Would this 10. 000, 0000 Naira Starch facility meetup the starch standard required by industries in Nigeria.

I guess the picture is getting clearer of the amount you can make from processing.

@mount1ng

The money manking picture is not totally clear, but I see a way on how money can be made.
I would appreciate if you can give analysis and figure for processing a tone of paddy, using the fact that are obtainable in ur locality. This would be very much appreciated as it would make thing clearer for everyone on this thread.
Agriculture / Re: Rice Farmers Meet Here by EJaja(m): 8:28pm On Aug 18, 2014
What is the conversion ration of paddy rice to raw rice, I mean what's the quantity of rice that can be gotten from a tone of rice paddy.
Agriculture / Re: Rice Farmers Meet Here by EJaja(m): 6:09pm On Aug 18, 2014
@ mount1ng,
I would like to know how much it would cost to process a tone of rice. (like how much a tone of rice paddy would cost, the various cost involved in processing it, cost of packaging.)

Also what area of the east would u recommend for someone to source for rice paddy.

Does the varriety of the rice grown and the way it is processed have anything to do with the final taste and quality when cooked.
Agriculture / Re: Rice Farmers Meet Here by EJaja(m): 9:48am On Aug 18, 2014
mount1ng: Hi guys, I am typing this the way it comes to my head, so please try and understand my flow.
The Rice Value Chain is an avenue to partake in profit sharing from rice cultivation to sale to the end user. A lot of inputs are required before a cup is rice is ready for you buy. In the long chain you can select area in the process as yours.
You can work on the farm as a tractor operator, herbicide and pesticide sprayer or supplier, weeder, harvester, you might have a combine harvester ( harvest and threshed) , a paddy buyer and miller or just a miller, buying of processed rice and package.
But for this discussion we will dwell on the area that interest me. I realised that processed rice sell better and give more profit.
Before I did rice with LASG (Rice for Job) I use to buy milled rice from the east and package, a point a friend said should your supplier fail you what will you do? What to do drove my into farming rice. We did semi mechanised at the farm, but guy, the other part no easy o. Any way, I learnt proper rice farming.
Back to the matter, buying paddy from farmers or commodity market then you process the rice. During processing, it important to watch where you dry your rice because this is where stones get into our local rice. If you have a destoner that will a plus for you.
Get a branded package for your rice, then you are good to go.
If you have a question or contribution, please join.
Bro how do one who have no previous idea go into the above stated processn. Can u pls outline the step by step procedure. Secondly how do one compete with the known brands like stalions, mama Gold and co? .

jethro2:
No. This is the first time I planted that variety. I may not also achieve that because I did not follow all the recommended guidelines.
Eg I did not apply fertilizer, the spacing I did not follow, fertilizer recommendation I messed up.
The tonnes I wrote is the expected if well managed
@Jethro2 I really would not agree with u on this, I have spoken to expert in maize production and I was told the national average is two tones per hectare. As for the hybrid u need irrigation, gud agronomy practices and fertilizers to be able to achieve 5 tones. Maize prouduction Is more favourable in East and southern africa were u can get as much as 10 tones.
If I may ask what varriety have u being growing before now and what's the yield per hectare?
Agriculture / Re: Market And Marketing: The Farmers Headache by EJaja(m): 1:34pm On Aug 13, 2014
jethro2:
The yield per hectare depend on a lot of things which includes but not limited to the variety of seed, the source of seed, the soil type, effective and proper use of fertilizer, seed placement and spacing in the farm etc.
Our local variety yield is between 1 _2 tonnes per hectare with minimal maintenance.
Premier Oba 2 is between 5 - 7 tonnes.
A tonne is 1000kg which is 10 bags of 100kg.

@jethro2
Have u actually achieved the 5 - 7 tones quoted above ?
