Obiagu1:

You completely misunderstood me. There’s no problem between Delta Igbo and non-Yoruba West so Osadebe becoming premier when Midwest was created should not be a line of argument you should use.

In the beginning there was South. East and West was created to separate the two major groups, the Igbo and Yoruba only to cut Igboland in two with one going west and the other east. I remember former governor of Anambra State, C.C. Onoh telling my dad how he and his group protested vehemently against Delta Igbo going West all to no avail.

Except you tell me why Midwest was created in a democratic government out of the then West, I can’t seem to find a reason for its creation while the other regions, East and North remained intact.

How about visting places like waado.org to educate yourself on such issues, that is the sort of place you should head for? It is annoying when people launch into ethnocentric guesswork. The reason Midwest was created is because the minorities didn't want to be lorded over by any majority group, we battled hard for our independence, we won it and we will preserve it.

DapoBear:

A book I purchased and have been reading (The Nigerian Civil War) has a demographic map on it. The middle belt is quite huge. The core north is pretty small. I would say at this point that the core North is only Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Northern Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe and Borno.

Everything else is middle belt. Even Adamawa that I thought was Fulani is actually Bachama instead.

EDIT: So I guess if you take the demographic figures listed publicly at face value and say give half of the population of the Kaduna to the core North, you get the following population estimate for the core North:

octave:2> 3.2+3.7+3.2+5.7+1/2*6+9.4+4.4+2.3+4.1
ans = 39

So roughly 39 million.

Of course, it is very likely that the number for some of these states are massively inflated. It seems implausible that Kano is 3 times more densely populated than Ondo state, more densely populated than say Ondo state. So to be quite honest, the population of the core North might be as little as 20 million.

I have always maintained that the core Northern population is less than 20 million. I disagree with you that Bornu is a core Northern state, they are used by the core North just like the Middle Belt is. You would be hard pressed to find a Bornu man rubbing shoulders with the Hausa or Fulani elite.
My list of core Northern states is; Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa and Yobe.

The rogue team was said to have impersonated Babafemi and sent out the statement to media organisations worldwide.

Now I know what is in your minds now. Don't get me wrong, Mr president is doing a good job. That I will not deny, but before we jump into conclusions let us analyse the only man on earth who was voted for by the whole world, Barrack Hussein Obama.
"YES WE CAN" is a very popular quote and is believed to show "optimism". The whole world was driven by the desire to see a black man rule the world governing power. So finally ,the "messiah" came out of the blues and everyone backed him up. People including Nigerians went as far as conducting rallys just for him with the "yes we can" everywhere. Now the almighty Obama finally wins the election and the first remarkable thing he does is to legalise homosexualism in America. Wow!!!! can I also tell you that the world now believes today that Obama is the Antichrist the bible spoke about in the book of revelations.

With apologies, this sir is 100% crackpot, loony, wacky, loopy and all words with similar meanings.

Jonathan's Presidency: Northern Elements plan Gridlock, Mayhem, may use Boko Haram
…Military Coup on the table
…How Security Report stopped Jonathan's American Trip
…Fifth Columnists under Security Watch

Mallam Adamu Ciroma Alhaji Tanko Yakassai Alhaji Lawal Kaita Dr. Iyorchia Ayu

A crisis of huge magnitude capable of thwarting Nigeria’s democratic process is currently being planned by some Northern elements following the declaration of President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2011 Presidential elections.

It was learnt that the characters behind the plot have at various nocturnal meetings vowed to ensure gridlock, and mayhem if President Jonathan gets the ticket.

Highly placed sources told pointblanknews.com that the plot is in three phases: challenge the PDP’s decision to accept President Jonathan’s candidacy in court, cause religious riots and killings of Southerners in the North and then create a state of emergency in the country and a consequent military putsch.

Spearheading the plot that has on the table, a possible event that could lead to the ‘suspension of the constitution’, are Former Central Bank Governor and Ex- Minister for Finance, Adamu Ciroma, Ex Internal Affairs minister and former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, PDP chieftain, Yakassai; former deputy National chairman of the defunct National Party Of Nigeria (NPN), Shetima Ali Munguno;, Senator Kanti Bello, Ex National Democratic Party chairman, and IBB campaign coordinator, Hassan Mohammed Jalo; PDP chieftain, Lawal Kaita, Bello Kirfi, Second republic Ambassador to Switzerland, Yahaya Kwande, and Special assistant to for Vice President, Abubakar Atiku, Ex Chief of Army, General Abdulrahman Dambazzau, and scribe Northern consultative Forum (NCF), Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim while General Office Commanding (GOC), 3 rd Armored Division, in Jos, General Saleh Maina, is said to have been briefed.

Pointblanknews.com also learnt that the extremists in the North are expected to co-opt some influential and desperate politicians from other zones in the sinister game plan.

In line with the script, some of the arrowheads have agreed to start sending signals through the media, of a possible pogrom that would make the Rwandan genocide, a child’s play. They also want to recreate pockets of massacre in the north that led to the civil war. They intend to mobilize ethnic militia like the Boko Haram, to launch all out genocide on southerners in the north, with an anticipated reprisal attacks in the south.

The plot is expected to also involve some officers of northern extraction and top attorneys. The attorney’s are expected to begin series of legal battles to challenge the PDP in court. The legal option would be a page out of the Arthur Nzeribe’s infamous Association for Better Nigeria, ABN, play book. ABN had in 1993 got an injunction stopping the Professor Humphrey Nwosu’s electoral Commission from conducting the Presidential election.

Pointblanknews.com learnt that, If Jonathan gets the nod of the PDP as its standard bearer, the legal think-tank made up of top jurists, retired justices and judges are expected to fashion out a suit that would be brought before a judge of their peers who would grant an injunction that would restrain INEC from conducting the presidential election.

In a recent letter jointly signed by Ciroma, Ayu, Kaita, Kirfi, Kwande and Bashir Ibrahim, they said “…we are extremely worried that our Party’s failure to deliver justice in this matter, may ignite a series of events, the scope and magnitude of which we can neither proximate nor contain. The peace, stability and unity of our country are superior to the personal ambition of one man. This stability and the corporate existence of our Party are all at stake and we urge you to grant our prayers.”

Recently also , one of General Ibrahim Babangida’s campaign coordinators, and ex National Democratic Party chairman, Hassan Mohammed Jalo , in line with the fiery rhetoric of characters like Kanti Bello and Tanko Yakassai said “we have a leader (Jonathan) that wants Nigeria to disintegrate, that wants Nigeria to crumble on his head. At the rate we are going, if anything happens to Nigeria now the whole blame will go to Goodluck Jonathan because he is the President”

Monguno, 74, former Mines and Power Commissioner under General Gowon said “I am afraid if he (Jonathan) insists on standing for the Presidency, there will be all sorts of confusion, a lot of confusion that could compromise the unity of Nigeria.”

Sources hinted pointblanknews.com that the series of warnings and threats issued by leaders from the North have now reached a new crescendo as options and strategies are now being worked out.

According to highly placed sources, in the event of a crisis, the North would take full advantage of its population in the Military and take over. The source said “they would also take advantage of the fact that the new Army chief, General Onyeabo Azubuike Ihejirika is yet to ‘settle’ down, coupled with the fact that some key officers are still loyal to the sacked Army chief, Gen Abdulrahman Dambazzau.”

Dambazzau who was relieved from his position while attending a conference in New York and is said to have expressed anger over the way and manner he was fired. He has a long list of followers among soldiers of Northern extraction.

General Maina who is a key consideration in the plot was at one time put under surveillance by the military intelligence. He heads one of the most strategic and lethal Division in the Nigeria Army. The other three key areas that are being infiltrated are 2 nd Div, Ibadan; 82 Div, Lagos and 1 Mechanized Division, Kaduna.

President Jonathan have had to cancel his planned Visit to the United States to address the United Nations General Assembly soon after declaring to contest in what a security source said had to do with “immediate security reports obtained.”

Some Northern politicians had warned that the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), must not field President Jonathan, a southerner for the Presidential election insisting that it is the turn of Northern Nigeria to produce the President.

However, security sources hinted Pointblanknews.com that soon after president Jonathan declared at the Eagle Square, Abuja, some top Northern leaders met to strategize and stop the Presidency from “being hijacked by the Southerner.”

According to a source “we received a tip- off almost immediately because they were monitoring the events on television and that was why we advised the president against any foreign trip now.”

But President Jonathan had relied on the provision of the Nigeria constitution as against an agreement in the PDP to declare his interest to vie for the top political position.

Kaita: North ’ll make Nigeria ungovernable for Jonathan
Tuesday, 05 October 2010 05:52 Biodun Durojaiye
Ted Odogwu, Kano

THE drumbeat over the 2011 presidential election became louder at the weekend as former governor of the old Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawan Kaita, vowed that the North would make the country ungovernable if President Goodluck Jonathan wins the polls.

He said: “It is becoming apparent that the recent replacement of Service Chiefs is part of President Jonathan’s plan to use state apparatus to scale the 2011 presidential hurdle.

“Anything short of a Northern President is tantamount to stealing our Presidency. Jonathan has to go and he will go. Even if he uses the incumbency power to get his nomination on the platform of the PDP, he would be frustrated out.”

Kaita, founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and close ally of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, warned that the North should not be blamed for the calamity that will befall the country, if Jonathan emerges President next year.

He said: “The North is determined, if that happens, to make the country ungovernable for President Jonathan or any other Southerner who finds his way to the seat of power on the platform of the PDP against the principle of the party’s zoning policy.

“Feelers from the South-South clearly show that the North is not the only region that is outraged over the situation. The South-East is there grumbling and the South-South, his (Jonathan) geo-political zone, he is not sure of their support.”

Reacting to the general thinking that the minority and Christians in the North are backing Jonathan, Kaita said it was a wrong assumption.

He said: “What you may call Northern Christians are concentrated more in Benue State where they may constitute about 90 per cent. In Plateau State, if you study that carefully, the Christian/Muslim population is 60 per cent for Christians, 40 per cent Muslims, so Plateau State is not an entirely a Christian State. The only state in the North that is substantially a Christian community is Benue State.”

Nigerians, he said, should be concerned over the prevailing political situation in the country because the North will not accept any government founded on any fraudulent foundation, which, he stressed, would definitely crumble, pointing out that “it should be seen by all as a stolen mandate that must be retrieved by all means”.

Kaita expressed displeasure over the event in Owerri, the Imo State capital, where the meeting of Igbo leaders was disrupted by security agents, saying such an action simply demonstrated dictatorship and disorder, “an indication that there is danger in the country”.

While recalling that he moved the motion in 2002 for the retention of zoning that gave former President Olusegun Obasanjo a second term mandate, Kaita said Jonathan did not say the truth over his comments on zoning, stating that he (Jonathan) was physically present and voted at the caucus meeting as he represented Bayelsa State as the deputy governor then.

To him, the motion for zoning was principally for power shift “which is the presidential power. That was the essence for the zoning, all other offices were to follow”.

“Just for the sake of power, Jonathan has turned to something else, its very bad and he is losing credibility for this.”

Kaita, however, said he was happy that some notable Northerners, such as former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd); Atiku; former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari; former National Security Adviser (NSA), Lt-General Aliyu Gusau (rtd) and a few others are in the race to represent the interest of the North.

Group Wants Kaita Tried For Treason
Author: Date: Oct 8th, 2010.

The Jonathan Sambo Campaign Organisation has called for the trial of an associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, for treason over his recent statement that the North will make the country ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan if he is able to get the presidential ticket of Peoples Democratic Party and was victorious in the 2011 elections.

The second republic politician also said the North will also not accept the emergence of any candidate from any other part of the country in a recent interview.

But in a press release signed by Sully Abu yesterday, the Jonathan Campaign Organisation said the comments by Kaita is treasonable.

The campaign group therefore called on the security agencies to take appropriate action.

“The point must be made that those promising to make the country ungovernable for President Jonathan, as Alhaji Lawal Kaita openly boasted recently, must also be ready to keep a date with the law.

“We are after all a country governed by laws, and the laws of treason are very clear in this regard.

. . .

“But this time, Nigerians can not be fooled. Our people remain eternally vigilant, and we call on the security agencies not to hesitate to charge anyone found culpable with the relevant laws of the land.”

Haha. This is the funniest things I've heard in a long time. Do you think war is the shoot, bomb and run tactics of the Militants in ND? Do you think war is the caution being exercised by the JTF? War is to CRUSH. People who are more learned than u can ever imagine know that war is not an OPTION for the ND.

Maybe you haven't realised who is in control of the JTF. Clean your eyes.

@OnlyTruth
I don't think it will end up as Ijaw vs Fulani with everone else watching. Rather, it will be the Nigerian army vs rebels, I only made the earlier points to show that war is a very suicidal direction for the Fulani to take; they simply have no cards to play in an all out crisis. They might dream up impractical ways to import fuel in tankers over land from Chad or Niger, but it will only lead to many sorry sights. Maybe they can import jihadists, however that will tickle the wrong parts of the American underbelly.
The governing issue in alliances, should there be all out war, will be the need for immediate and short term survival for the regions; they will ally with the region that can provide that.
The long and short of the matter, is that without some genius plan to sieze power at the centre, the Yakasai's, Ciroma's, Bello's etc are only cementing themselves into a hard corner. I am sure they can see this and will capitulate immediately they lose the primaries, thats what this is all about. The South South can see this and is ready to push them over the abyss, if they keep on pushing senselessly. so lets wait and see what next week brings.

No, it will not be like 67. All the dynamics are different. If Igboland was generating the wealth of the country like the ND is today, they would have won the war in about two weeks. And it would have been a very crushing defeat, money goes a very long way (it can even buy sophisticated weapons and their crews wink).
Politics / Re: Editorial: President Jonathan And His Embarrassing Words by Faeb: 8:07am On Oct 09, 2010
I wonder why people get into these foolish fads? Jonathan gave his view of the bombing after being briefed and suddenly every guguru seller is a detective that knows what is going on behind the scenes and how to handle it.
We have long taken our eye off the ball. In fact, when we were told about the two wanted men, many scoffed in that now familiar shallow way and immediately concluded that the names were made up. It really is strange how mama Caro and Baba Dokas have become cut and join security champs who know it all. Every vulcaniser and rewire now knows more than the SSS.

There are shrill voices on here about how certain critics aren't playing to IBB's tune. So whose tune exactly are you playing to when it escapes you that it took IBB 7 days to commiserate, when it escapes you that non of your would be leaders (except GEJ) has actually visited the wounded. When people begin to miss the obvious, is it not because they are unhealthily engaged? Jonathan is human and is bound to make errors. I don't recall anyone ever suggesting that Yar Adua be impeached because of the numerous religious pogroms under his watch, yet a bomb goes off and people take up arms, asking GEJ to resign (as if he planted the bombs). Part of the reason for this strange turn of events, no doubt, is that he is from a minority group whose voice is not that loud (I pity Nigeria, there's a long way to go).

A lot of folk might protest that they never joined the call for GEJ's resignation, but they've got to realise that this foolish over the top reaction, plays directly into the agenda of the Ciroma's, Yakasai's and IBB's. Yet they scream, "I am not with IBB!" Well you ain't thinking straight if you think you ain't.

The Eastern Middle Belt is very strongly for Jonathan. Benue and Plateau make up 40% of the army, ND has all the oil. Its a very doable battle, more so when by far the most powerful and equipped unit of the Nigerian army (JTF) is in the ND, commanded by an ND person.
Also, nobody can fight a war without fuel, neither can they fight without money (whereas, ND can chuck up billions of dollars in a couple of days). . . Very doable war without help outside the Middle Belt.

Abuja Bomb Blasts: Odds Against IBB
Written by Taiwo Adisa, Abuja
Saturday, 09 October 2010

Former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, has again come under intense pressure to quit the 2011 presidential race,
following indications that his camp is being linked with the Abuja bomb blasts of October 1.

Sources in Abuja’s political circles confirmed that besides the arrest and interrogation of the Director General of the Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, in connection with the bomb blasts, there have been other sources linking the former leader’s camp with the incidents.

The former military ruler said on Thursday that it would be idiotic to link him with the bomb blasts.

Before the bomb blast incident, some former loyalists of the former General popularly called IBB Boys were said to have asked the former head of state to back out of the presidential race so as not to avoid being rubbished by a non-General.

It was also gathered that some northern politicians have calculated that the negative effects the bomb blast saga could have on Babangida may add to the political burden he already has to carry.

“Those seeking the consensus option among northern presidential aspirants appeared to be getting worried about what they called political liabilities of the former military ruler. They are coming to the realisation that somehow, the General has to be made to face the reality of dropping out of the contest,” a source close to the political settings in Abuja said.

Sources also said that the General is under pressure to quit the race  as a result of his alleged misdeeds in office.

It was gathered that the man is coming under pressure even from unusual quarters, following what is called unabating hostility to his presidential bid.

[b]“Several persons are pointing attention to the fact that everywhere Babangida turns, he seems to be facing hostility. If you talk of his economic sense, people will easily point to the $12.4 billion Gulf Oil windfall. When you talk of political experience, people will easily remind you of the June 12 election annulment and when you talk of his experience in security, people quickly remind you of the bombing of Dele Giwa and the killing of a crop of soldiers in the Hercules C130 plane crash in Lagos. It is an all round crisis for us at the Babangida front,” a source said.

Another source said that the bomb attacks on Abuja on October 1 had not only reawakened the concerns about security in Nigeria, but also appeared to point some fingers at Babangida.
