@physicsMHD

why are you going out of your way to discredit a major discipline? clearly your understanding of Spinoza is shallow, anyone can google einstein and tell you his theory of relativity and then say that it seems quite easy to grasp. But how his propositions were arrived at is something you might want to look into. Also, look into other things. I used to think philosophy was quite easy till i started with the upper level classes and its not easy!! its tougher than economics! The concepts are incredibly hard to grasp. I suggest you do a little more research and quit embarrassing yourself.

"cumbaya sitting in a circle" speculations (such as the many from the individuals I just listed) be treated as plausible or even sensible if they're written well enough.

Thats pretty much you saying its all B.S!! Take a class, upper level class in philosophy at the undergrad level and we can discuss. Gloss over ludwig wittgenstein, and no one can say Spinoza lacks depth or rigor. Not even you!  angry

@ Ileke- Idi I enjoyed phenomenology the most!! very deep, combination of astronomy, metaphysics, cognitive science and madness.

PhysicsMHD:

"Can we travel back into time?" is strictly a physics question, the guys who deal in that area are relativity guys. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_travel for more.

Metaphysics and epistemology, are they difficult in the sense that say, number theory or mathematical biology are difficult?

Analytic philosophy in general is what people call difficult, but apart from requiring some subtlety, it's not really difficult in the sense that science is difficult, in my opinion.

Yeah, but once you start getting into mathematical logic, it really becomes mathematics. Cantor, Godel, Tarski, etc. It's actually math.
Cognitive science is science (biology).
I can see philosophy of mind as challenging;  but I think it's mostly conjectural.

I think this is more about the dichotomy between verbal intelligence and logical/mathematical intelligence. As somebody with both, the most complex language-based reasoning and langauage-based problems pale in comparison to that involved in science, in my honest opinion.

Well i honestly think your approach to the discipline is bordering on naivete and some inexperience in that field. Conjectural, I doubt it, why do you think many scientists in enlightenment era europe like Rene Descartes doubled as philosophers, physicists and mathematicians? I believe what philosophy tries to teach is "intellectual investigation" and "critical thinking" at their deepest levels. Much of the approach used is scientific at its core so its not some cumbaya circle sit-in speculating about pointless things as some like to believe. Logic is philosophy, its roots are philosophical and it remains one of the largest branches of philosophy, so much so that LSE offers a doctoral program in just that (philosophy of logic) your problem is you simply refuse to give it any credit due to you apparent biases!

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary scientific study of how information concerning faculties such as perception, language, reasoning, and emotion, is represented and transformed in a (human or other animal) nervous system or machine (e.g., computer). It consists of multiple research disciplines, including psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, neuroscience, learning sciences, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and education

Can spot poor arguments from a mile that's for sure.

yeah, I am trying to cut it down a bit. Makes me sound like a Arrow and also seems to piss people off. If I sound s/t/u/pid on NL it would attract a  lot of friends and less attention to me. So going to start typing in pidgin and yoruba as much as I can.

I am pretty civil actually. I rarely insult anyone. Infact I deserve a civility award on NL.

I agree. I love philosophy of the mind especially the fact that we might not exist at all or that there is  no proof that who I am talking to now is not a figment of my imagination. Or that my brain could be in a box, and all of you are just illusions being perpetuated by an evil "Dr".

brain in a vat grin grin grin grin Hillary Putnam  cool

PhysicsMHD:

What parts of philosophy do you guys think are actually difficult?  undecided I'm skeptical.

Well Logic is pretty much math without numbers, logic is certainly not easy, the easiest branches of philosophy are political and legal philosophy! but once you get into philosophy of mind/cognitive science, metaphysics, epistemology, even philosophy of language, you're going pretty deep. Little wonder why the study of philosophy has been the foundation of just about all of the worlds civilizations including the current western one!
Theres a misconception about this discipline, people confuse philosophy as used in the more popular context "what is your philosophy on life" with the academic discipline yet the two couldn't be further away from each other!!! philosophy is definitely very hard, not an easy major at all.

LOL nah i used to be in MN but moved to NY. Im a grad student!!! PPE is an undergrad major!!!

Ileke-IdI:

Depends, where are you?
Economic pays alot if you work for wall street . . . . Engineering pays much more if you work in Nigeria.
In all majors, you have to put into perspective where you'd be spending your life. We've all decided that as Engineering might be a genuine and well-respected career, it doesnt pay much. DO NOT GO IN FOR THE MONEY!

Where are you?

Just G-W-G blanket? Why not also get a G-W-G gold teeth or whatever they call those braces looking thing.

Then start acting like a Yoruba man  angry

NY, suffolk county to be exact!

Ileke-IdI:

I guess, because according to some peeps, you cant make money with those majors.

Politics is an excellent money maker in Nigeria tho grin grin

Honey, do what makes you happy o. And if you intend on going back to Nigeria, study what you think will get you jobs; nothing like genetics/biology/anthropology/ health science etc embarassed

What I noticed is that most ghetto AA women go into nursing. . . .why?. . . .that's why they give bad reps to other nurses.

LOl have you heard about that major tho? Economics pays as much as engineering majors. philosophy is the most difficult discipline in non pure sciences.

Politics / Re: Breaking News - Buhari Picks Bakare by gadogado(m): 9:00pm On Jan 31, 2011
Nigerians never fail to amaze me, look at the comments on this thread. It is very true that "a people deserves the kind of leaders they get" Look at Buhari, a tried and tested leader with 0 tolerance for corruption, look at his record when he was PTF chairman, look at the development that took place across Nigeria. Yet, people keep talking about him being a "jihadist" you guys will forever avoid substance and digress into meaningless sentiment that is of no benefit to your collective well being.
GEJ is a proven incompetent and corrupt leader and has no capacity nor will to move this country forward. He has shown he is in with the business as usual crowd. Yet you want to vote for him on the basis of sentiment. Nigerians deserve the leaders they have, you're a useless people incapable of anything productive. your fortay is division! you're simply divisive, i suppose its in your nature. You clearly have more credible people and you know fully well that corruption is Nigeria's problem yet you're ok with corrupt leaders as long as they're from your part of the country. Im going to burn my nigerian passport tonight. Nigerians disgust me.
Politics / Re: The North Finally Loses Power by gadogado(m): 9:26pm On Jan 15, 2011
You guys really need to calm down, all this just oz an incumbent president won his party's primaries? that means the north is no longer powerful. Had it not been for the north, GEJ would not have one the primaries, did you see how katsina voted with its 147 delegates, 90% went to GEJ, so the north supported GEJ over Atiku, atiku is not charismatic in the north, many northerners believe he is gay actually and people dont like him.

The real test comes when Buhari, a highly popular and charismatic figure in the north runs against GEJ in April, have you seen the crowd Buhari pulls? If theres free and fair elections, Buhari will beat GEJ!!! But Nigerian democracy, the incumbent always wins coz of the crude and immature demoracy we practice! But Buhari will garner enough votes to scare GEJ into rigging.
