airsaylongcome: Good to read your story. And I hope more 40+ folks get motivated to start of a career in Tech. Loads of space in the industry to cater for mature entrants. And I'm glad to read you talk about stuff other than SWE. Loads of play room in stuff outside SWE. Customer/Technical support is a low resistance route for those looking to get started. Can always pivot from Helpdesk to many other roles.
1am to 4am can be brutal, especially if you have an 8-5 day job.
One thing with US remote is that it fxcks up your circadian rhythm. Big time. Worse when they shift the clocks 1 hr back in winter.
What is the roadmap to getting customer/technical support roles. Are there resources for one to learn online
You get it o. I still use an old plastic chair. The only expensive thing on my setup is my laptop and my monitor came from qtguru. No need spending anyhow in this period of economic uncertainty.
That ergonomic chair important is very important because of your back, David Hundeyin once twitted about losing a friend due to complications from back problems due to sitting for long periods of time
This is 2022. Grow out of stereotypes of 30 years ago.
(Who told you girls don't want tech? Are you a girl? ARE YOU? You aren't, but you want to speak for them. Because you corralled them into the kitchen at home and home economics in school, it really means they don't want to be in tech? Corral them into sciences and see if there's anything different between learning for either gender. Preferential treatment indeed.)
Sorry I can’t have any logical discussion with you, your emotional outbursts won’t let you through the facts on ground. So there’s no point
My comment about 1993 is because I have been in this coding/Tech stuff for very long seeing all of this discrimination. I have seen people stop girls from touching computers because they are girls, but allow guys touch it because they can play computer games. I know a girl who back in the 1990s could use Lotus 123 and Dbase IV and wasn't allowed to touch her school computer.
You talk about gender preferential treatment. Would Americans not complain about preferential treatment given to blacks? Would black people have been able to make progress in tech if there wasn't preferential treatment given to encourage them into the field? With American roles do you know how many of us complain that they discriminate against us with those jobs?
Well maybe there was discrimination in the 1990s in tech, I don’t know but that was 30 years ago, and you and I know that even 5 years in tech is a very long time as things move very fast. Women generally due to nature won’t be interested in tech because that’s not how they are wired,at least there are other fields where they are dominant. Let’s not kid ourselves, PROGRAMMING IS HARD, one needs a lot of resilience to break through, how many women can be that persistent, a very few of them, even when I was in secondary school in late 1990s/early 2000s or so when we had to choose between intro-tech and home economics, only 2 girls out of almost 70girls chose intro-tech, so what are we talking about. So I think it’s based on interest not discrimination, because despite what other said about women getting preferential treatment, we still have less than 24 % of women in tech.
The bolded is exactly what I am talking about. When women got into medicine and surgery the same insults were hurled at them that they were weak and incompetent and would never match a man. Years down the line I'm sure all of that has changed.
FYI I'm a male and I have been in tech since 1993 coding in BASIC and saving text-based RPGs on a radio cassette tape. I have been in this field long enough to know the animosity towards females in tech. But yeah, you are right, I'm a weakling
That you have been coding since 1993 doesn’t mean that you know everything. The guys arguing with you were giving you some points but you are seeing it because you are only looking for a fault in their comments perceive to attack you or women. Please read them again without being emotional. I don’t have any problem having majority of the gender in tech as women. But the problem is that majority of our women are not really interested, not because there are no opportunities for women. And also I think having gender preferential treatment will only do us more harm than good. You can watch this video below
Why Fortran? Hmmm. Okay I'm a bit of a looney. So in Uni year 2, we had a course called Scientific Programming I believe. Dreaded course and notorious for massive carry over. It was Fortran Programming. I made a pact with my self that I can carry any other course o. But never Fortran. NEVER. So I decided to "die there". I studied that course and Language in depth. In fact I became so good that my course mates will just wait for me to finish programming and copy/paste my work. The smart ones would change variable names but most would just copy/paste. The lecturer was always incensed because the whole class were getting the assignments even though in the classes none could write code on the board. I didn't know that the man was doing some real underground investigation. On exam day the whole class had formed formation and reserved seat for No 10 (me) believing that the man did not know who was supplying the code. As I walked in with my goons make we siddon take formation that's how the man called me "Airsaylongcome, where ever you plan to seat today forget about it, you are not seating there. You will write your exam in my office while everyone else will write here." The carryover was bad mehn. People did not even bother reading (80% couldn't code). In the Instructors office, I had one on one invigilation. I just laughed. Na me bring compiler and IDE give my course mates o!
So yeah that's my story behind Fortran. I had long forgotten about Fortran until my recent hunt for Remote jobs when I stumbled across some programming openings for Scientific research requiring knowledge of Fortran. Some starting from $86k per annum. Truth be told I'm from the old school of programming. I struggle to wrap my head around all these new stacks and fancy frontend UI/UX stuff that is the trend today. Most of the languages I'm getting back to learn don't need all those fancy stuff. For me, it's get the job done then maybe we can wear it clothes later
Chai I just remembered doing this FORTRAN 14 or 15 years ago or so, I really loved the language. Basic,FORTRAN and COBOL.
virginprincess: My brother can't be this stupid, but if he decides to be because of love that's concern, his life, his bussiness, that doesn't stop me from making my statement.
You unconsciously called the man stupid, are you not agreeing with the redpillers already
TheManOfTheYear: Now, that was a disaster, clearly my skills were too junior for such an assessment. Maybe in one year time after I get real experience, I can give them a try again. But for now, I need my first job. Man gats start from somewhere.
I started dropping applications on sites like weworkremotely, indeed and of course LinkedIn.
My CV is a killer I must tell you. The way I structured that thing, it would be hard for most recruiters to resist. Especially if it's a junior role.
The first week, I dropped about 12 applications. And about 3 got back to me with a rejection mail.
Only 2 got back to me with an offer to proceed with my candidacy. I was excited to be honest. The first is a Europe based web development company. While the second is a Nigerian based start-up with nice product.
The Europe based one asked me about my salary expectations for the junior role before I would proceed with my interview process. I told them I want $1,500 for a start. (I be wan write $2k sef )
The next day they got back to me and said they cannot pay me that for a start. That their range is between $400 to $700 for a junior role. They asked if I was okay with it.
Omo, I said yes o. Biko. They decided to proceed with my candidacy.
They offered you that because you are living in Nigeria, but it’s not bad, in getting your foot to the door
Get out of here. Mumu oshi. You want to claim children that do not have your blood. You too said it that the customs officer said he has known your wife before you meet her. Definitely they gave been sleeping together for years, and the children are his, not yours. If the children are biologically your blood, then she would not have gone with them. She knows the children are not yours.
Make I tell you the truth, take the matter to the shrine, only the gods can resolve this. Don't take the issue to Church oooo, Jesus will just forgive them and tell you sorry.
Take the matter to the shrine, then get popcorn and cold drink and see how the gods totally destroy the two adulterers.
whothiefmymoney: part of the fiction so people can’t hardly make any trace. I think most of his 20% fiction came towards the end of his story. Don’t be surprised Angela is his wife
Well I felt he did that, he added those fiction for a good reason, seeing that his story along the line was inspiring some people to do cultism, instead of discouraging it,he could even be very well to do, because the last episode does not add up. But it’s all good.
I think the last episode of this story is not true because op indicated that pastor was still alive and he was going to ask him something(I can’t remember) next time he went to the east.
Well from the frontend developer community that I have seen on Reddit. Majority of them(more than 70%)say it’s dumb to even test a candidate on data structures and many of them have been frontend developers for more than 10 years. That they have never had to implement those DS stuff on their day to day work. That it is even useless 99% of the time for frontend developers. Though few of them think it’s very important
Lindner: Go to Ghana and see how crazy an entire culture can be about burial. I've never seen anything like that in my life.
Good afternoon sir, I want to discuss some things with you, I have been doing JavaScript for some time now, I will go into reactjs soon. I have been doing some research on blockchain development for some time now. Please I just need to discuss some of my findings and ask you some questions. How do I contact you
romeo411: What material do you suggest that I use in learning web dev. I have been using one from Udemy by Angela Yu but I seem not to be making headway.
You can check his past posts or topics. Though Angela Yu’s web course is not bad,she explains very well, though her JavaScript part is es5 and somehow outdated. Just go through his older posts or topics and you will get all your answer
Men I am just working on leaving this shithole. I will see all this nonsense from outside. The reasoning in this country is sick even from so called literates. Imagine someone saying it's better to be married at poor at 38 than to be single and poor at 99. Do these guys know what poverty entails. I have seen poverty and believe you me it's better to face that shit alone than as a family man. People will chop your daughter's with a loaf of bread and indomie. Your son's will become cultists and degenerates while you slug it out with your landlord in a face me I face you ghetto. Terrible
Chai I saw this live, while growing up,Ifeoma and Amina. Boys and grownup men were passing them about. And these girls were underaged at that time. In fact one of gave birth twice to children for two different men before she turned 18.
