When will Facebook and Nairaland spend money on the teeming tech-savvy Nigerian youths making use of their sites and apps? Is it that we're are not innovative enough - lacking requisite tech skills, or that our talents are yet to be appreciated by the government and private sector? Perhaps it could be that we're just heavy users and not innovators - using without adding value. I think this is a wake up call for Nigerians to challenge the domestic and global players with our handiwork. Nigerians, I believe U!

Programming / Yahoo Spends 'millions' On UK Teen Nick D'aloisio's Summly App by Giditinz(m): 10:58am On Mar 26, 2013
An app created by a UK teenager has been acquired by web giant Yahoo in a deal the BBC understands to be worth "dozens of millions" of pounds.

Seventeen-year-old Nick D'Aloisio's Summly app summarises news stories from popular media companies.

Neither company would disclose the terms of the deal publicly.

The app itself will now close, but its features will be used in mobile products at Yahoo, where Mr D'Aloisio has been given a job.

He will be joined by several of Summly's "top staff" in new roles at Yahoo in the next few weeks.

The app launched when Mr D'Aloisio was aged just 15, and soon attracted more than £1m of investment. He is now likely to be one of the world's youngest self-made multi-millionaires.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, the Wimbledon-based teen said: "I like shoes, I will buy a new pair of Nike trainers and I'll probably get a new computer, but at the moment I just want to save and bank it.

"I don't have many living expenses."
'Fantastic team'

In a note on the Summly blog, Mr D'Aloisio wrote on Monday: "When I founded Summly at 15, I would have never imagined being in this position so suddenly.

"I'd personally like to thank Li Ka-Shing and Horizons Ventures for having the foresight to back a teenager pursuing his dream. Also to our investors, advisers and of course the fantastic team for believing in the potential of Summly.

"Without you all, this never would have been possible. I'd also like to thank my family, friends and school for supporting me."

Yahoo's senior vice president of mobile, Adam Cahan, said the company was "excited" to have Mr D'Aloisio and his colleagues on board.

"For publishers, the Summly technology provides a new approach to drive interest in stories and reach a generation of mobile users that want information on the go," he wrote.

Science/Technology / Re: 2013 Top 10 Predictions For China’s Mobile Market by Giditinz(m): 12:33pm On Mar 06, 2013
Pips, what do you think the Nigerian Mobile Market will look like in 2013?
Science/Technology / 2013 Top 10 Predictions For China’s Mobile Market by Giditinz(m): 11:34am On Mar 06, 2013
Looks like the world didn’t end in 2012…so it’s time for making the yearly predictions for 2013. The mobile market in China is changing faster than ever, and in 2013 it will only accelerate.

The smartphone revolution has happened, the OS war is won, and the 3G transition progressing on track. But the mobile ad spend boom has yet to arrive.

Read on to know what to watch for in the coming year. Now you can be like Wayne Gretzky, and go to where the pucks are headed…

1. 4G LTE licenses handed out early to Chinese carriers…China Mobile celebrates

China Mobile was saddled with the China 3G standard, TDS-CDMA, a few years back and had a tough time getting handset support for it. The 4G transition is an opportunity for CMCC to get back in the driver’s seat, but that’s not scheduled to start until 2014 in China.

2. Weixin (WeChat) is blocked by Chinese carriers over competitive dispute

The Chinese carriers are losing way too much money due to users moving off traditional voice/SMS channels, and they are not making revenues from data plans.

3. Sina Weibo user activity drop significantly due to “Weixin effect”

Weibo active user rates are clearly trending down as users move more of their time and postings to Weixin Moments.

4. Facebook re-enters China market with help of a local partner but sees limited traction

Facebook has been looking to get significant presence in China for years. It’ll keep trying, but it’s an uphill battle.

5. China becomes the innovation capital for mobile social user experience and business models

China has the most smartphones, 3G users, and social network users by far than any other market…innovation can be driven where the users are concentrated and need arises.

6. 200+ million Android phones sold in China in 2013

China has transitioned to primarily smartphones already…and Android is the winner by far.

7. Local phone brands dominate phone sales numbers in China

Three (Lenovo, Huawei, and HTC) of the top five selling phone brands in China are local brands now. That’s going to be four of the top five in 2013.

8. Apple launches iPhone mini targeting mid to low-end market

Apple’s market share has fallen from 8 percent in 2011 to under 6 percent in 2012…it needs a solution to regain relevance and market share.

9. A major mobile virus outbreak spreads throughout Android devices

With more than 80 percent of new smartphones sold being Android, there is now critical mass to attract hacker attention.

10. Brands require agencies to include mobile in media plans

Every marketing director/manager is using a smartphone and all their bosses are asking, “What’s our mobile marketing plan/strategy?” And by the way, Chinese users are spending at least as much time on mobile as any other device in their lives.

Family / Re: Marriage Is Meant For Believers Only ! by Giditinz(m): 6:12pm On Feb 28, 2013
Marriage is a universal concept. It's not just a question of believer and unbeliever but of recognizing the fact that it's a fundamental part of human existence. Now different cultures and religions subscribe to varying ideas of marriage e.g polygamy... However, Christian marriage strongly holds to monogamy: the union of one man and one woman. And down through history, this has been the most common and fulfilling type of marriage (ask married people). Christian marriage also extols the sanctity of marriage as a sacrament, a bond between one man and one woman who have agreed to live together, loving one another, been open to life and engendering a posterity.

The unspeakable has happened in our 21st Century. A few influential people in media and govt circles are attempting to redefine the concept of Marriage. Please what has been put in nature by its creator, let no human put asunder! Let's all preserve the dignity of marriage whether you are a believer or an unbeliever.
Science/Technology / Microsoft Is Closing Hotmail And Moving Everyone To Outlook.com by Giditinz(m): 4:54pm On Feb 27, 2013

Microsoft announced earlier this week that it is closing Hotmail and moving the "hundreds of millions" still using it to Outlook.com by this summer.
hotmailupgrade

The move isn't unexpected, but perhaps more sudden than some anticipated. Hotmail users, once they move (or are moved) will get Outlook.com's clean, Metro-Style interface for their mail -- and ultimately, calendars. (For a walk-through of the UI changes Hotmail users will see, check out this Microsoft FAQ.)

Given that many of the new features in Outlook.com -- Microsoft's new Web-mail service that is no longer in "preview," as of this week -- are already part of Hotmail, the Outlook.com experience (beyond the UI itself) shouldn't be too jarringly different.

Microsoft provided guidance last summer for those who wanted to proactively make the Hotmail-to-Outlook.com move. There's not much required on users' parts to make this happen. But some users still have questions. And different folks around the Web have answers.

Q: How much warning do users get before Microsoft move an existing Hotmail account to Outlook.com?

A: There will be several e-mails first prompting people to upgrade on their own.

Q: If I move my Hotmail account to an Outlook.com account, can I change my mind and go back?

A: At this point, no. (When Outlook.com was still in "preview," Microsoft did allow this.)

Q: What happens to all my stored Hotmail once I am moved off Hotmail to Outlook.com?

A: Everything moves over. If you click the upgrade button it takes maybe a few seconds, but all your existing messages auto-populate and carry over.

Q: Which browsers support Outlook.com?

A: Outlook.com is optimized for Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10; Google Chrome 17 and higher; Firefox 10 and higher; Safari 5.1 on Mac. It also works relatively well on IE 7, Google Chrome 16 and 5; Firefox 9 and 5; Safari 5.1 on Windows and Safari 5 on Windows and Mac. It doesn't work at all on IE 6 and older; Google Chrome 4 and older; Firefox 4 and older; and Safari 4.X and older.

Q: What happens if my Microsoft ID/Windows Live ID is tied to Hotmail? Do I have to get a new one and change my accounts?

A: No. If you use an @hotmail.com, @msn.com or @live.com e-mail address as your Microsoft account, you can keep it, even after Hotmail is shuttered. "Think of this the same way as you would changing your mobile phone carrier. You are simply moving to a better service, but your 'number' (in this case your Microsoft account and email address) stays the same," a Microsoft spokesperson explained.

Q: I already created a separate, new Outlook.com account. So once my existing Hotmail account is moved to Outlook.com, what happens? Will my two Outlook.com accounts be merged?

A: There is no way to actually "merge" these accounts. But you can connect these two accounts and then toggle back and forth by linking them. To do this, go to account settings and select the permissions tab. Click on "manage linked accounts."

Q: Users are being allowed to keep their Hotmail addresses if they want. Wasn’t a big part of creating Outlook.com a plan to get rid of the tired/tainted Hotmail brand?

A: "The simple fact is that many people are attached to their email address. We do expect a certain number to want a new Outlook.com address (which is great); others will want to keep their Hotmail address. Either is fine since they will all get to use the new service," a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed.

Q: When will Microsoft update the calendar in Outlook.com so that it is Metro-Style, instead of Hotmail-Style?

A: Microsoft officials aren't saying anything other than what they've said since summer 2012, which is "soon."

Q: When will Outlook.com be integrated with Skype?

A: Also "soon." No further word from the Softies on the timing.

Q: Can I configure my mobile devices -- including Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS and/or Android phones to use Outlook.com?

A: You can. Here's how to do this for Windows 8 and Windows Phone. And here's guidance for iOS/Android phones (all courtesy of Windows SuperSite's Paul Thurrott.)

Which Nigerian father will not bequeath his wealth to his children. I even hear that children sell their parent's properties and travel abroad while the old man is still living in the house. What's your experience?
Nairaland / General / 7 Rich And Famous People Who Do Not Give Their Children Money by Giditinz(m): 4:50pm On Feb 22, 2013
Bill Gates
Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the world’s second-richest man, told The Sun in 2010 that he will donate most of his money to charity and “give the kids some money but not a meaningful percentage.” He said on Reddit in February: “I definitely think leaving kids massive amounts of money is not a favor to them.”

Warren Buffett
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett plans to donate most of his fortune to charity. Peter Buffett, Buffett’s second-oldest son, told DailyFinance in 2011 that his father “transferred values to me, and not wealth.”

Ted Turner
CNN founder Ted Turner, who has donated $1 billion to the United Nations, doesn’t have much money left for his kids. He told MSNBC in 2010 that he is “almost to the edge of poverty” — that is, his net worth is only $2 billion, according to Forbes.

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs, the late Apple CEO who revitalized the company, said in an interview with Playboy in 1985: “If you die, you certainly don’t want to leave a large amount to your children. It will just ruin their lives.”

George Lucas
George Lucas, the writer-director behind the Star Wars series, doesn’t plan to leave much money for his kids; he is giving most of it to charity. He wrote in a pledge letter that he is “dedicating the majority of [his] wealth to improving education” because “it is the key to the survival of the human race,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

Graham Tuckwell
Graham Tuckwell, the founder and chairman of ETF Securities, who has donated $50 million to Australian National University for scholarships, told the Sydney Daily Telegraph he does not plan to give much money to his kids because “lots of money is poisonous to have.” “If you just give them stuff, it almost destroys their desire to do things and you actually end up with kids who are a lot worse off.” (Hat tip: CNBC.)

Steven Hayworth
Steven Hayworth, ex-CEO of Gibraltar Private Bank, told the New York Times in 2010 that he was glad his daughter was going to work at a clothing store that summer because he wanted her to learn “the value of a dollar.”

This kind of statement shows the legacy our elders, people we consider as leaders, more-so "fallen leaders" - fallen in the eyes of society, fallen in the heart of posterity, want to bequeath the future generation. When the father does not see the success of his children, won't that Father already be considered as a failure to his children and the society? The young vibrant Nigerian leaders are the future of Nigeria and the future of Africa! Those who say that Nigeria will not develop and be where we are destined to be. May they not develop!

I always knew that U.K will follow suit. Now that the last ingredient has been added to the concoction, let the society implode - morally. They can legalise all they want. One thing we are sure of in Nigeria is that we are still a God fearing people and still hold strongly to the cherished natural and human values. Having homosexual orientation or tendencies is not the issue, but practicing (in act) and advocating that it be made a natural law or constitutionalsed
is where we blindly miss the point. Where is the complementarity (MAN+WOMAN)? If we follow this way, how can we be open to life? Aren't we gonna become extinct? It seems more a mockery of the creator? How low modern man has descended in the midst of all the advancement in promoting life, science and tech...... NIGERIANS BE ON THE WATCH!

I believe strongly in opposition parties as been an effective instrument to advance the cause of true democracy. The recent news on the merging of some parties into a formidable mega political party is a welcome development. However, the strategy adopted to bring about this and salvage current situation will either make or mar it's existence. Again and again meetings have been had, hope has been raised but when it comes to choosing the people to represent: the hope is dashed, bickering emerges and our nation takes a step backward. Let's watch and see if the emergence of the new merger will take us forward - To the promise land, the new Nigeria, the hope of Africa, the golden egg of the world.

Politics / Re: Fashola: Jonathan Lacks The Knowledge To Tackle Nigeria’s Problems by Giditinz(m): 4:02pm On Feb 01, 2013
I think the title of this post is inappropriate for this level of discussion. We know that nobody knows it all, and no matter the level of knowledge a leader possess,he/she will still depend on the best people and resources for advise and help in other to rule effectively. From this premise, I will say that the president lacks neither the knowledge nor the will power (Strength)to carry out his functions. Nigerians were not blind when they gave the president the mandate to rule. And now that we have challenges do we just boot him out?
It will surprise many Nigerians, but the fact is that since independence we have not had the best of mechanics to work on the rickety car called Nigeria. No wonder some have thought of pulling the car apart, or simply abandoning it and jumping into other cars where they have the desired luxury and comfort.
He may not be better than predecessors but let's encourage a sitting president to complete his term before making this kind of statement. The Car belongs to us all. As complicated as Nigeria is, believe you me we may never find a Moses to lead Nigeria to the promise land, as we desire. This will only come when we all realize that the car is ours, that we all need to take care of it, from out little corner, steering our Character in other to drive the country to its desired end.
Affinity to PDP or ACN or CPC is not the point, because we will all still have our party agenda and personal interest to pursue. The point is whether we have Nigeria at heart- Do we really seek Peace, security, prosperity of the present citizen and the unborn.

Phones / 10 Things To Know About The New BB (blackberry) 10 by Giditinz(m): 5:03pm On Jan 18, 2013

1. It more secure.
It has a solid reputation in the business world for a high level of security and reliability. That's why it's highly patronised by Fortune 500 companies and government agencies.

2.The new blackberry allows you function in two modes: WORK and PLAY.Your employer can exert some control over the Work side of your device while your Personal partition is beyond their control.

3.It stands out of the crowd. It's a genuine alternative to other OS: Android, iOS...... integration of gestures, speed, frame mind blowing

4.It's attracting developersGranted! Android and IOS are way ahead in the app world, but RIM's aim is to launch with 70,000 apps and that would be unprecedented for a new platform. At the weekend RIM was able to attract 15,000 app submissions by offering $100 for every ported app which is accepted and offered for sale in the BB 10 app store. Other incentives include the chance to win BB 10 development handsets and trips to developer conferences. RIM also set aside $10 million to offer developers with apps that exceed 100 downloads and earn at least $1,000 a guaranteed top up to $10,000.

5. A loyal fan base
BB has over 79 million subscribers. Some have switched over to iOS and Android but the BB10 will surely lure many back to the fold.

6.The Hub: a universal inbox It's a one stop shop for organising your life at your as you wish. From multiple email accounts, call history, BBM, Text messages, social networks....

7.Multitasking: One outstanding feature of the BB10 is it's focus on multitasking.

8.Trademark physical keyboardThere’s no doubt that touchscreens are here to stay, but some people will always prefer a physical keyboard on their smartphone and RIM make the best in the business. It still retains touchscreen keyboard in BB 10 that is well-spaced, accurate, offers decent predictive text, and even simultaneous multi-language support. It’s already one of our favorite touch keyboards.

9. BBMThe BBM is a feature for the app and now takes centre stage in the BB 10. The real-time chat client is going to expand on instant messaging to include voice calls over Wi-Fi. RIM has also worked on BBM Connected which is about integrating other apps like Facebook. There are rumors of a video chatting and screen sharing functionality which will definitely make it a killer app.

10.Embracing the new
BB 10 will be embracing new trends. It will support NFC (Near field communication) and mobile payments.

Lastly, 1600 companies and counting, have already signed up for the Blackberry 10 training program.

I just stumbled upon this enlightening article on same-sex marriage. Just thought I should share it! It's rather long but worth reading. What are your candid views on this burning issue? Should Nigeria join the race for same-sex legislation in the name of modernization, progress and universal relevance or should we preserve our traditional values and possibly start the third missionary journey to redeem the White man? The floor is open. Follow link or read below.

http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/01/in-support-of-david-mark-on-same-sex-marriage/

Chukka Agbu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in this piece supported the call by David Mark, President of the Senate that the issue of same-sex marriage has no ground in Nigeria’s moral and religious firmament

Senate President David Mark is reported to have come under pressure; from some of the international community and rights activists for his unyielding stance on the issue of same-sex marriage. According to The Guardian newspaper of Tuesday January 8, 2013 at page 1, the Senate President in mentioning that the bill prohibiting same- sex marriage wouldn’t be passed was reported to have said that “we swill not compromise on this. 1 wants to invite you all to join the crusade of decency in our society. There are many good values we can copy to join from other society but certainly not this one (same- sex marriage). We have to prove to the rest of the world, who are advocates of this unnatural way that we Nigerians promote and respect sanity, morality and humanity. Every Individual is a product of the union of a man and woman”.

Before delving into the corpus of our laws to bear out the Senator Mark’s profound assertions, let us consider graphically a scene that could if the argument swings one way only, be played out in real life and not in Nollywood -a bedecked Emeka or Kunle or Yakubu wiggling out as a bride-to-be to accept a symbolic cup of wine from a suitor, in a traditional wedding ceremony. How bizarre and what an abomination that will be in most Nigerians customary settings!

The Supreme law in Nigeria, the I999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) guarantees the rights of Citizens. S .37 of the afore-mentioned constitution provides as follows “The privacy of citizens, their homes, correspondence, telegraphic communications is hereby guaranteed and protected.”

Predictably, this provision is the battle cry of the proponents of same-sex marriage as the postulation is that the privacy referred to include the marital (marriage) life of the citizens which must suffer no interference, whether it be between a man and a woman or a woman and a woman.
The Distinguished Senator’s position however is solidly grounded in S.45 (1) (a) of the same Constitution which provides that “nothing in Sections 37, 38, 39 and 41 of this Constitution shall invalidate any law that is reasonably justifiable in a democratic society (a) in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health.”

There is no controverting the fact that the right to privacy as set down above (which it is conceded includes marriage life) in section 37 of the 1999 constitution is unarguably subject to section 45 (1) (a) of the 1999 Constitution as such a right must be subject to the test of public order and public morality.

And is there any guide as to what constitutes public order and public morality under Nigerian laws in this context? Our “recourse shall be to S.2.7 of the Criminal Code Act which states inter alia: “Any male person who, whether in public or private, commits any act of gross indecency with another male person, or procures another male person to commit any act or gross indecency with him or attempts to procure the commission of any such act by any male person with himself or with another male person, whether in public or private is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.”

And if the proponent of lesbianism think that the above provision has missed something out, we should take a look at S.214 (1) of the criminal code which says that: “Any person who has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for “FOURTEEN YEARS” (emphasis mine).

Thus, whereas a man to man offender may be convicted for a three year sentence under S.27, a woman to woman offender will bag fourteen years without an option of a fine.

Taking the argument further, if one of the deciding factors in a marriage as spelt out in S.5 (1) (a) of the Matrimonial Causes Act dealing with voidable marriages is the incapability to consummate, is it conceivable that our laws would permit the very act of consummation of marriage to be a grave offence purnishable with a fourteen years prison sentence, such as the unnatural offence spelt out in S. 24 and that of indecent practices between males spelt out in S. 27 of the Criminal Code Act respectively?

There is therefore, no legal basis for the institution of same sex marriage in Nigeria as the consummation of such an unnatural and immoral union in itself in Nigeria will constitute a criminal offence under our Criminal Code Act.

In this vein, S. 4 (1) of the proposed Act to prohibit Marriage between persons of same gender, solemnization of same and for other matters related therewith, which states that “persons that entered into a same gender marriage contract commit an offence and are jointly liable on conviction to a term of three years imprisonment each” should before enactment be amended to provide for stricter prison term of 14 years in alignment with S. 214 of the Criminal Code Act dealing with unnatural offences (offenses against morality) which as a felony caries a 14 years jail sentence as aforestated.

This intervention will not be complete without a consideration of the intent of the legislators in S. 2 (1) of the proposed Act which provides that “marriage entered between persons of same gender shall be solemnized in any place of worship either church or mosque in Nigeria.”

Nigeria’s population of about 140, 020, 950 million people is predominantly Christian or Muslim. The proponents of same-sex marriage despite the weighty support of highly placed individuals in the United States of America and the arm-twisting threat of withholding foreign Aid to a defiant Nigeria have found the garnering of support from religious leaders in particular a mission impossible. This is not without reason.

Should the distinguished legislators require scriptural validation for the provision of the aforementioned S. 2 (1), these passages will suffice and they need not look further.

The notion that same sex marriage can come to be, is equally abhorred in the Qur’an (7: 80-81). “Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation ever committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preverent to women; you are indeed a people transgressing beyond bonds.” Qur’an 26: 165 puts the issue beyond cavil, “What! Of all creatures do ye come unto the males, and leave the wives your lord created for you? Nay!, but ye are forward folk”

It is submitted that the Bible and the Qur’an both prohibit same-sex union and marriage as sufficiently demonstrated by the forgoing passages, just as the Bible and the Qur’an from the beginning of time both prohibited stealing and killings as sins, which were then codified as offences. The logical sequence for the easily discernable divine law that, “thou shall not commit acts of homosexuality and lesbianism” should therefore be the urgent enactment of an Act strictly prohibiting same-sex marriage. Senator David Mark is on terra firma in declaring at the top of his voice that the ban on same-sex marriage is irrevocable.

In summation, the apostles of same-sex marriage must situate their agitations in the Court of morality and public order. Jurisprudential Scholars like Dias (4th Edition) and C.K Allen (2nd Edition) insist that law and morality always converge. Dias stated that moral considerations no doubt, influence rules of law while Allen holds firmly to the view that “Our Judges have always kept their fingers delicately but firmly upon the pulse of accepted morality of the day”. English common law under which these Scholars wrote form a source of Nigerian laws. The Upper legislative chamber is invited to be properly guided in resolutely closing the door against same-see marriage as the pulse of accepted morality and family values informed by legal, Christian: Muslim, traditional religion and all relevant considerations is vehemently opposed to such an unnatural proposition.
