Health / Linda, 25, Breast Cancer Patient Cries For Help by Hblaise(m): 12:18am On Sep 03, 2013
WHEN 25-year-old Linda Godwin, a primary school teacher residing
at 11, Odofin Street, Olodi Apapa in Lagos, discovered a tiny lump
(seed) in her right breast sometime in January 2012, she had no
premonition she was on the threshold of a long and tortuous journey
into the agonizing world of cancer.
Today Linda, who hails from Isi Umuozu, Nwangele LGA of Imo
State, and is mother of a two and a half-year-old boy, is fighting the
battle of her life against late-stage breast cancer.
In the hope to win the battle and survive, she is currently undergoing
expensive chemotherapy at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital,
LUTH, Idi Araba, Lagos.
Linda who described her ordeal as the worst imaginable, is passionately
appealing to all well meaning Nigerians for financial assistance to
complete the therapy and to go abroad for further treatment.
Writhing and groaning in pains, she told a moving tale of anguish,
regret and lamentation of the genesis of her ordeal.
“I discovered the lump in my breast by accident and called my
husband’s attention to it. Together, we went to a diagnostic centre in
Pako, Ajegunle area of Lagos State where a scan was prescribed. The
result indicated that the lump was benign. We were told it was actually
a cyst and not a malignant tumour as we initially feared.”
Linda said was prescribed Augmentin tablets and some other
antibiotics and the couple was made to believe that the drugs would
melt off the lump. She didn’t know it then, but the decision to follow the
prescribed treatment turned out to be her undoing.
“To my surprise, the seed started growing even faster. The growth was
so fast it covered almost half of the breast in no time. I became
alarmed and on advice of concerned persons, decided to try out
herbal medicine which I took orally and applied superficially on the
breast. But there was no improvement.”
Linda has since been running from pillar to post in her quest for a cure.
Her search for relief took her to various native doctors, traditional
healers and Churches within and outside Lagos. But it was to no avail.
“I came back to Lagos hopeless. I went the NTA for help but
unfortunately, they did not attend to us. My condition went from bad
to worse. The lump became hard as stone and eventually covered my
entire breast.
“It was at this point in time I was referred to LUTH where a medical
consultant revealed that it was the antibiotics that triggered the
abnormal growth of the tumour and worsened my condition. He said I
ought to have removed the seed while it was still tender. He advised
that the best option was to cut off the breast, but fear gripped me
instantly at the thought of cutting off my breast at such a young age.
I told my husband about the doctor’s advice and he did not buy the
idea either.”
Linda went back home, but as time went by, the breast began
rottening and falling off bit by bit until it fell off entirely on its own.
“People thought I was going to die and I had no option than to go
back to the hospital. With the little money we could gather, we went to
LUTH again. The doctor chided me for not listening to his advice
earlier.”
A Medical report from LUTH indicated Linda is being managed for
invasive ductal carcinoma, SBR Grade III, synchronous bilateral
breast cancer.
“This is a late stage cancer,” noted Consultant Oncologist and Head of
the Department of Radiation/Oncology, LUTH, Professor A.T.
Ajekigbe, while confirming Linda was registered at the surgical
outpatient department of the health institution on April 26, 2013.
Ajekigbe recalled the patient had earlier reported at the Accident &
Emergency on 20th March, 2013 and was diagnosed with right
breast ulcer.
Lamenting that most cancer patients present late at the hospital, when
only palliative care can be provided, he urged that the earlier the
presentation, the better the mangement. “Let this be a warning to
others. Examine your body and if you find anything wrong, give a
shout and people will come to your assistance.
“When she got to the Accident & Emergency, her case was bad. She
had history of difficulty of moving the right hand. Also had some
oedema, then she was referred. When she was first seen it was at a late
stage. She had the disease at least 15 months earlier before presenting.
She had difficulty breathing for about one week before presenting,” he
observed.
Further, Ajekigbe said what Linda has on the right arm is known as
Lymphodema. “It is different from oedema. In lymphoedema, the
lymphatic system is involved as a result of which the swelling does not
easily go down. What we do is to manage it to reduce the
complications.
Further, the Consultant Oncologist explained: “The axilla is the armpit
and the breast they are related. I call them first cousins. what ever
happens to the breast most of the time will stretch to the armpit near it,
and what happens to the breast may come from the armpit, they are
so related. It is called the lymphatic drainage system. The upper part of
the breast drains into the system. if a doctor examines your breast for
whatever reason, the doctor must also look into the armpit to see if there
is anything there. he must check the lymph nodes.
“Occasionally when breast cancer spreads to the axilla, it blocks the
lymphatic drainage system. The fluid comes down quite right, but
cannot go back because of the blockage, hence the swollem arm. We
advise patients to alleviate that part as often as possible. “Often, we use
crepe bandage to push the fluid back. We may also apply fortified
cream through massage to push the fluid back. We can also use what
is known as Flowtron to push back the fluid to provide relief.”
At this point in time, the tumour has spread to Linda’s right arm and
hand. She has been placed on an eight-course chemotherapy at three-
week intervals. She has currently completed four courses and has four
to go. Each treatment course costs approximately N300,000, but
when drugs and other essentials are factored in, in addition to
requirement of care and support, rehabilitation, radiotherapy, plastic
surgery, etc., the cost runs even higher.

Crime / Lagos Pastor Arrested For Duping Congregation by Hblaise(m): 12:24am On Aug 24, 2013
A 37-year-old pastor, Kolawole Olugbenga, on

Court in Lagos, charged with defrauding a member
of his congregation of N214,000.
Olugbenga, who lives at No. 19, Arowoshola St.,

Crime / Python Owners Face Animal Cruelty Charges by Hblaise(m): 12:10am On Aug 24, 2013
A couple have been charged with three counts
of animal cruelty in connection with the 40 snakes that were found at
a local motel.
Police found the ball pythons at the Bell City Motel on Aug. 15.
They ranged from one foot to four-and-a-half feet in length and
were inside several plastic storage bins, without water.
The SPCA took them into its care. Further examination revealed they
were dehydrated.
Investigators later found the owners, who surrendered the reptiles, as
well as five eggs, to the SPCA.
The couple, whose names have not been released, have been charged
with causing distress to an animal, failing to provide care necessary
for an animal's general welfare and failing to provide adequate and
appropriate water.
“If providing for animals in your care becomes difficulty, it's
important to take the appropriate steps to ensure the animal's health isn't
compromised,” Darren Grandel, a senior investigator, said in a
statement released Friday morning. “Contact your local SPCA or
veterinarian to see what options are available.”
It's illegal to own a python in this city southwest of Toronto.
Many illegal exotic pets, including dozens of pythons, have been
seized nationwide since the tragic deaths of brothers Noah and
Connor Barthe, ages 4 and 6, who were strangled by an African
rock python that had escaped from its enclosure in the middle of the
night on Aug. 5.
Also Aug. 15, conservation authorities found nearly 50 illegal pythons
in a B.C. home. All the reptiles were euthanized. Authorities seized
more than 45 reptiles, including a five-foot American alligator, from a
home in Cobden, Ont., on Monday.

Nairaland / General / Woman Found Alive 13 Days After Her Funeral by Hblaise(m): 11:57pm On Aug 23, 2013
While just about every culture and religion has a
time-honored way of commemorating the dead,
what's the protocol for welcoming the buried back to
life?
Sharolyn Jackson's family found out this week when
the 50-year-old woman was found alive 13 days
after her funeral.
According to CBSPhilly KYW, the bizarre saga
began earlier this year when Jackson was reported
missing from her West Philadelphia home. Authorities
found a body that matched her description, and two
people, including her son, identified the woman as
Jackson.
Jackson "died" on July 20, according to her
obituary in The Times of Trenton, and the family
held a burial Aug. 3. On Legacy, an online
guestbook, one friend comforted the family, saying
"Only God has the final call."
Well, if that's true, God's quite a prankster: Last
Friday, Jackson was found alive at a mental health
facility.
The mix-up came as a surprise since Jackson's son
identified the body.
"The gold standard here [for identifying a body] is
visual identification by a family member," so the son's
identification was taken as fact, Philadelphia Health
Department spokesman James Garrow told The
Huffington Post.
While the family's trial-run grieving process is over, the
over-arching mystery remains: Who is the woman
actually buried under Jackson's tombstone?
"Right now we're working internally with the city law
department to see about exhuming the body, and
we're working with the police department to see if we
can identify who this woman is," Garrow said.
This isn't the first time a supposedly dead person has
shocked and delighted loved ones. Gilberto Araújo, a
Brazilian man, was mistakenly declared dead last
year. (The body actually belonged to his co-worker.)
He brought an unexpected plot twist to his own wake
when he walked in exclaiming, "Guys, I'm alive --
pinch me!"

Politics / Re: Anambra Guber: 11 Aspirants Gang-up Against Andy Uba by Hblaise(m): 8:06pm On Aug 20, 2013
GOVERNOR Peter Obi was yesterday desperately trying to divorce himself from the alleged conspiracy that disqualified Prof. Charles Soludo from the governorship race on the ticket of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA.
Prof. Soludo alongside five other aspirants including the erstwhile SSG, Mr. Oseloka Obaze were disqualified by the party’s screening committee on Friday. Since the news of the disqualification of Soludo from the APGA nomination contest, insinuations of a conspiracy orchestrated by powerful interests in the presidency have been abuzz.
Powerful interests
According to the speculations, the APGA top hierarchy was coerced to move against Soludoon the suspicion that he, Soludo would be antagonistic to Jonathan’s presidential aspirations in 2015.
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Chief Joe Martins Uzodike, who spoke for the governor, described the insinuation as unfounded, adding that APGA, set up a committee to screen prospective candidates with clear guidelines and wondered why Governor Obi should be blamed for a job done by a committee he was not a member.
Uzodike said: “Do you think the Governor himself is happy over the screening? How can he, when the immediate Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze whom he brought back from the USA was also screened out?” the Commissioner asked.
He also described as untrue the rumour that Prof. Charles Soludo was screened out becauseof the interest of the presidency after it was rumoured that Obi was the one who brought him into APGA to replace him.
According to him, the fact is that whatever happens in Nigeria is often interpreted not according to facts, but according to the people’s fancies, without even an iota of truth in most of them.
On Governor Obi’s insistence that the governorship will move to Anambra North, the commissioner said people should understand it from the point of view of the fact that the governor would only support a candidate fromthe North, as he, according to him, does not have the powers to stick to that if the people of the state decided otherwise.
He, however, assured that the governor’s preference for the next governor remains Anambra North.
“Even as electioneering is gearing up, the Governor says it at any fora that he will only support a candidate from the North in the spirit of equity and fairness,” he said.
Politics / Anambra Guber: 11 Aspirants Gang-up Against Andy Uba by Hblaise(m): 8:03pm On Aug 20, 2013
ELEVEN ASPIRANTS in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who at the commencement of the congresses pledged to work for the realizationof the party’s victory in the gubernatorial polls have taken their collaboration to a higher level. The 11 aspirants Vanguard learnt at the weekend have obtained an injunction restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC from interfering in the ongoing congresses.
The injunction is to be served on INEC this morning, authoritative sources in the Group of11, G11 told Vanguard at the weekend. The injunction it was learnt follows fears among the aspirants that INEC could intervene to the extent of declaring the ward congresses conducted by the Ken Emeakayi led mainstream of the party illegal. Indications to apossible decision by INEC follows the commission’s insistence that it only recognizesthe Ejike Oguebego faction of the party which reportedly has the sympathy of Chief Chris Uba.
There is little doubt among PDP partisans in Anambra that the coalition of aspirants which obtained the injunction is aiming its arsenal against Senator Andy Uba, the PDP’s candidate in 2007 and one of the most powerful forces on ground in the state.
Senator Uba is presently the chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC and the 11 aspirants in the Emeakayi camp according to sources fear that Senator Uba may use his influence on the commission to get it to recognize the nomination congresses being organized by the Oguebego faction of the party.
“We will not take chances and that is why we are going this way,” one of the aspirants involved told Vanguard at the weekend

“INEC has no role in the organization of the congress and we do not want to take any chance on the issue,” the source told Vanguard.
7 aspirants to participate in NNPP gubernatorial primaries
NO fewer that seven persons are to vie for the ticket of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, for the Anambra governorship election. The party has already chosen its candidates for the local government elections.
National secretary of the party, Mr. Major Abu, who spoke during the presentation of nomination form to one of its governorship aspirants, Prince Leonard Uchendu at the party’s state headquarters in Awka, explained that primaries for the selection of NNPP candidate for the November 16, 2013 governorship election will hold on August 30, 2013.
According to Abu, the party is collecting only N1 million from the aspirants because of its belief that asking the aspirants to pay so muchmoney was a way of scaring good people whomay have good ideas for the development of the state, but could be scared to
Speaking after picking the form, Uchendu, who is the president general of Umuawulu Town Union in Awka South local government area of the state, promised to tackle the criticalareas of social and economic sectors of the state if elected governor of Anambra State. He commended the incumbent governor, Mr. Peter Obi for the giant strides he recorded during his tenure and promised to surpass him if given the opportunity.
APC in secret mobilization drive
THE APC hierarchy had recently spread the word across the state to members that it had gotten the INEC voter’s cards for members. However, those who came to locations aroundthe 21 local government areas of the state for the voter’s cards last weekend instead of the INEC voter’s cards were formally registered as members of the party.
Indeed, in many places in the state at the weekend, members of APC were seen registering new members.
Meanwhile, the assertion by two of the party’s leading gubernatorial aspirants, Senator Annie Okonkwo and Mr. Godwin Ezemo that they have adopted the former ANPP chairman in thestate, Chief Pat Orjiakor as the interim chairman of the APC in the state is being hotly disputed by the camp of Senator Chris Ngige.Senator Ngige was not at the meeting where Orjiakor was adopted and his camp is believed not to be inclined towards Orjiakor, a source close to Ngige disclosed at the weekend.
Shock, disbelief trail Soludo’s disqualification inAPGA
MANY people in Anambra State expressed shock weekend when information filtered in that Professor Charles Soludo did not make it at the screening of governorship aspirants at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
While people wondered why any party would not like to field somebody like Soludo as its flag bearer, others said he ought to have known that Nigerian politics is not meant for people like him.

Gov Obi struggles to wiggle out of the Soludo conspiracy

Crime / Two Arrested For Running Baby Factory by Hblaise(m): 5:09pm On Aug 20, 2013
Police in Ebonyi State yesterday arrested two persons over their alleged involvement in the running of a baby factory in Imo State.

The suspects Ifeanyichukwu (24) and Gloria were arrested for recruiting young girls fromEbonyi State to Amaigbo in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State where they run a baby factory.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Sylvester Igbo, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while briefing newsmen in Abakaliki said one of the suspects, Ifeanyichukwu specialized in conveying pregnant young girls from Amasiri to Amaraku, Amaigbo in Imo State where the baby factory is located.
The suspect was alleged to have taken 17-old-year pregnant Uchechi (surname withheld) from Amasiri in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State to the baby factory after he had promised to link her to a provision store where she would be engagedas a salesgirl.
The PPRO said: “The case of child-trafficking was reported to the police. It is all about a teenager, Uchechi I7-year-old, who became pregnant for an Ebonyi husband.
When he could not cope with the pregnancy, one man, Ifeanyi, 24 from Amasiri in Afikpo North told the lady that he had a place where she could work as a salesgirl in Amaigbo in Imo State and he took her to that place. But on reaching the place, the girl saw other teenagers, who were pregnant for unknown men. They were housed waiting for the time they will deliver, and when this girl discovered this, she had no choice but to stay.
“That girl was taken to that place in March and on June 5, the girl gave birth to a baby boy. On June 6, the child was taken away from the girl to unknown people. After that, N10,000 was given to the girl as her transport fare to her place in Amasiri.
When the girl came back, the matter was reported to us. The girl also reported that one other girl from her village was taken there by this Ifeanyi. It was discovered that this place was used as baby factory by the proprietress, Favour, whose surname was not known.”
According to the PPRO, Uchechi later discovered that pregnant girls were confinedto the building and she had no option but to remain in the building until she delivered her baby.
One of the suspects, Ifeanyichukwu, in an interview, said he was contacted by the proprietor of the hospital to recruit three salesgirls for her.
Politics / We Have Killed Shekau, Boko Haram Leader- JTF by Hblaise(m): 3:24pm On Aug 20, 2013
Nigeria’s battle against terrorism got a boost yesterday when the military Joint Task Force (JTF) “Operation Restore Order” in Borno State said Boko Haram leader, Imam Abubakar Shekau, may have died from gunshot wounds he received in a clash with its troops.
The JTF said intelligence report indicated Shekau died between July 25 and August 3 ata border community in Cameroon where it claimed his aides smuggled him for treatment of injuries following gunshots from heavy bombardment on the sect leader and his aides by troops around their (Boko Haram) Sambisa Forest hideout .
“Intelligence report available to the Joint TaskForceOperation Restore Order, revealed that Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted Boko Haram terrorist leader, may have died. He died of gunshot wounds received in an encounter with the JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on June 30, 2013. Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border community in Cameroun for treatment from which he neverrecovered. It is greatly believed that Shekau might have died between July 25 and August 3, 2013. He was reported to have masterminded the kidnap of the seven French citizens and that of the elder statesman Alhaji (Dr) Shettima Ali Monguno inaddition to many murders of Islamic clerics inNorthern Nigeria. He was also responsible forbombings of many places of worship and public buildings including Police and United Nations Headquarters in Abuja,” JTF’s spokesman, Lt-Colonel Sagir Musa, said in a statement issued yesterday in Maiduguri.
Sagir maintained the recent video released bya purported leader was masterminded and dramatized by an impostor, insisting that intelligence reports showed Shekau was dead. “The recent video released on August 13, 20013 by the purported sect leader was dramatized by an imposter to hoodwink the members to continue with terrorism and to deceive undiscerning minds,” he stated. He called on the sect members “to lay down their arms and embrace the Federal Government’s offer for dialogue. “
A video purportedly released by one Shekau on August 13 titled: “Sallah message,” claimed responsibility for the series of attacksincluding the Gamboru Ngala, Bama, Malamfatori and Yobe. A man believed to be Abubakar Shekau also said the sect does not kill old, children and women but said that “those who do not accept the teachings will be treated as enemies.”
The JTF had about a year ago announced a N50 million reward for anybody who has credible information concerning the whereabouts of the Boko Haram leader. It also last week announced the killing of Shekau’s deputy, one Momodu Bama (aka Abu Saad) and his father, Flatari , said to be the spiritual leader of the sect. The United States, too, had in March, put a $7 million bounty on his head.
Residents in Maiduguri, the state capital, however, said they are doubtful of JTF’s claim, noting that they expected the task force to do a thorough job ascertaining the identity of the sect leader that died. “We would have wished the JTF did a thorough investigation and come out with the true picture of how the man (Shekau) died rather than suggesting that he may have died,” residents said.
In an earlier video, Shekau had said:“I enjoy killing anyone that God commands me to kill the way I enjoy killing chickens and rams,” hesaid in a message released last year. The US Justice Department lists 1965, 1969 and 1975 as possible years of the birth of the Islamist leader.
It is believed he was born in Yobe State, which borders Borno state, where Boko Haram was founded more than 10 years ago by Mohammed Yusuf, who died in 2009. Shekau claimed command of Boko Haram in 2010. Since then, the group’s capacity to attack a range of targets appeared to expand.
Boko Haram is made up of different factions and the extent to which Shekau coordinates and commands attacks has always been unclear. But most analysts think he deliberately sought to turn the group in a more violent direction following Yusuf’s death.
Shekau studied theology under local clerics inthe Mafoni area of Maiduguri and enrolled in a government-run school for Islamic studies. He was said to have met Yusuf through Mamman Nur, thought to be the group’s third-in-command at the time of Boko Haram’s 2009 uprising in Maiduguri.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, has ordered the redeployment of 14 commissioners of police with a charge to them to step up thefight against crime.

The newly appointed commissioners have also been charged to improve on the cordial relationship among sister security agencies in their respective beats, to ensure that criminal activities are reduced.
Similarly, the IGP has also ordered six Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), and 13 commissioners of police to proceed on a leadership and strategic management course to equip them with the requisite leadership and management skills.

Under the arrangement, CP Lawal Tanko is now the Commissioner of Police in charge of Borno State, while CP Ibrahim Ahmed, has been redeployed to Zamfara, CP Hilary Okpara,is now in charge of Bayelsa, while CP Maigari Dikko, is the new CP for Ebonyi State.

Meanwhile, there was panic in Rivers State Police Command yesterday, over what many referred to as massive transfer of police officers out of the state.
Those allegedly affected by the transfer wereofficers attached to the Government House and others believed to be loyal to the government of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
When Daily Sun visited the State Police Command, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, yesterday, officers and men were seen discussing the mass transfer in groups.
Some of them, who spoke to Daily Sun on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that some senior officers were really transferred out of the state. They said they were yet to confirmthe names of those affected by the transfer.

Family / Child Marriage: A Breach Of Human Rights by Hblaise(m): 3:55am On Aug 19, 2013
The ongoing constitution amendment, particularly section 29 (4)
(b), highlights a significant issue that has been begging for
attention. It is girl-child marriage. To lay the matter to rest, there
is a need to answer some questions raised by the section. These
include–who is a child? What are the constitutional consequences
of childearly marriage?
The Child’s Rights Act defines a child as a human being who is
less than eighteen years of age. This is line with the provisions of
the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the African
Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (African
Children’s Charter) which Nigeria has ratified and domesticated.
18 years is the age of majority in Nigeria agreed, albeit implicitly,
by some constitutional provisions. These include Section 29 (4)
(a) which provides that ‘full age” means the age of eighteen years
and above, though dealing with citizenship; Section 35 (1) (d)
permits denial of right to personal liberty to a person less than
eighteen years for education or welfare. Section 36 (4) (a)
authorizes the exclusion of the public from courts/tribunals
hearings for the welfare of persons who have not attained the age
of eighteen years; and Section 77 (2)/ 112 (2) provides that to be
eligible for registration as a voter for either national or state
legislative house, a Nigerian must have attained eighteen years.
Children are generally excluded from activities like voting,
driving, entering into a contract, because such activities demand
physical, psychological and mental maturity. Children are
believed to lack the capacity to enter into contracts. Marriage is a
contract requiring the consensus of the parties involved. Marriage
is also widely believed to be of adult concern as a child lacks the
full understanding to comprehend fully what marriage is about.
This is understandable because there is a time for everything, a
time to be a child and a time to be an adult.
Experts have noted grave effects of girl-child marriage. These
include susceptibility to the health risks associated with early
sexual initiation like obstetric fistula. Their partially developed
reproductive organs could predispose them to complications
during childbirth, Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF), secondary
infertility, maternal and infant mortality. Their Inability to
negotiate safe sex increases their vulnerability to Sexually
Transmitted Diseases and infections, including HIV. They are
victims of sexual and other forms of domestic abuse, social
isolation and are deprived of the opportunity to maximize their
potentials in order to make meaningful contributions to their
worlds, perpetuating gender inequality and female poverty.
It is little wonder that besides the Child’s Rights Act, a plethora of
international and regional conventions have ratified and
domesticated treaties like the International Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
(CEDAW), the Protocol to the African Charter on Rights of
women in Africa (Women’s Protocol) and the African Children’s
Charter, specifically prohibit Child marriage.
The Nigerian Constitution, also guarantees fundamental human
rights to the citizens.. These rights are divided into Civil /Political
and socio-economic, rights with the distinction lying in the
justifiability of Civil/Political rights. This articles will not
overstress the indivisibility of rights, the pertinence of making
socio-economic rights enforceable or even Nigeria’s duty of
upholding obligations voluntarily imposed on itself by ratification
as was held by the African Commission. It focuses on the
guaranteed fundamental rights provisions of Constitution and
domesticated treaties in relation to child marriage. Section 33(1),
in guaranteeing right to life, provides that ‘every person has a
right to life, and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life,
save in execution of the sentence of a court …’ When girls are
forced into marriages, they begin procreation before the full
development of their reproductive organs, predisposing them to
complications of labor which could result in maternal mortality, a
common occurrence in Nigeria. This death, not flowing from
execution of court sentence is a violation of right to life. In the
face of maternal mortality due to underage pregnancy, Nigerian
girls cannot truly be said to enjoy right to life, the fulcrum of
other human rights. One of the positive steps necessary for the
prevention of this unintentional loss of lives and protecting right
to life is criminalizing girl-child marriage.
Section 34, in guaranteeing dignity as a human right provides that
‘…no person shall be subjected to torture or inhuman or
degrading treatment,…no person shall be held in slavery or
servitude…’ Dignity entails that women should have a say in the
choice of …their life partners. Compelling young girls into
marriages without consent is degrading. It is indeed painful to
force a girl into marriage with a man, old enough to be her
grandfather. In the case of Uzoukwu and 5 Ors, V Ezeonu II and
8 Ors, (1991) 6 NWLR (Pg. 200) 708, ‘torture was held to
include …a mental torture in the sense of mental agony or mental
worry … degrading treatment has the element of lowering the
societal status, character, value or position of a person’. Many
child-brides are withdrawn from schools for this purpose
evidencing that girls’ aspirations are not as important as those of
boys who are allowed to continue their education. This act, flies in
the face of Articles 17(1) and 24 of the domesticated, African
Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Charter) which
provide for rights to education and satisfactory environment
favorable to development. The interpretation of which will
prohibit child marriage, a retrogressive practice creating
unfavorable environments for women’s development. This is
particularly so because education is one of the best strategies for
promoting women emancipation, demystifying retrogressive
customs and transforming attitude towards women. The act
resonates lines in Agnes Dewenis poem ‘Tell me why as a woman,
I have all these burden When God, the Constitution and the
United Nations all tell me You and I are equal in all respects?’
Child marriage is a form of modern day slavery. News of
maltreatments meted out on these children by their husbands and
in-laws in the name of wife chastisement constantly inundate our
media. These child-wives are compelled to engage in domestic
tasks too tedious for their tender ages. Adult concerns like sex, is
foisted on them with all its problems earlier noted. What other
degrading treatment could be suffered by a girl whose underage
pregnancy leads to VVF or secondary infertility? They are forced
to raise children while they are themselves children, thereby
making a lot of uninformed decisions. How can a mere child
succeed in these tasks which many adults cannot cope with? Of
course, their children and the larger society will be the worse for
it. Since women are their children’s first teachers, what will be the
fate of students of an ignorant teacher? Section 35 permits the
violation of right to personal liberty of a minor only for the
purpose of education or welfare. Seeing that child marriage
violates guaranteed fundamental human rights and that
progressive nations are judged by the way they treat women and
children, it behooves our lawmakers to exhibit the necessary
political will to protect our girls by removing the befuddling
section 29 (4) (b) and similar discriminatory provisions from our
Constitution.
Politics / Anambra 2013: One Election, Many Troubles by Hblaise(m): 1:22am On Aug 19, 2013
Symphonies of discord are the lots of
governorship aspirants in virtually all the
political parties that will contest the
governorship election in Anambra State in
November, this year. This factor appears to be
making the state the hottest political bed in
Nigeria at the moment, write Idowu Samuel and
Sylvanus Eze.
Anambra has always proved a hard nut in any
electoral contest in Nigeria. This tendency is
currently being exhibited as the state matches
towards another governorship election
scheduled to hold in November 16 this year.
Three parties, namely the ruling All
Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) and the All
Progressives Congress (APC) are to slug it out
for the governorship seat. Nonetheless, less
than two months to the governorship election,
none of the rival parties can stand out with near
perfect plans to address the confusions that
have been trailing their parade of numerous
aspirants for same election.
With this manner of politics, Anambra has been
an exhibit of an extreme brand of republicanism
which the entire South-East Nigeria has been
known for since ages. Lack of cohesion and
consensus building in leadership selection from
time immemorial have been undermining the
chances of the zone on election matters. It is
believed that an average Igbo political office
seeker believes he is independent and strong
enough to stand alone in an election, while he is
never inclined towards yielding the ground for
the other aspirant, no matter the opponents
strength.
Even though Anambra is a test case for all the
contending parties, being the ground for
gauging the strength of each of them on the
larger political battles in 2015, no one can place
the fate of each party against the backdrop the
long list of aspirants for the November
governorship race. Compounding the problem
is the preparedness by each of the aspirants to
match the other money for money, connection
for connection, intrigue for intrigue and
treachery for treachery.
APGA, being the ruling party in Anambra,
commands an instant attention in the
governorship contest. Yet, the party appears
rooted in crisis the moment it disqualified five
of its governorship aspirants, top of who were
Professor Charles Soludo. The reason offered
by APGA for disqualifying Soludo and others
was that they all failed to prove their financial
capabilities beyond doubt. That excuse has
indicated that money is the yardstick APGA
depends on to determine who gets the ticket to
contest elections on its platform.
Others excluded from the APGA primaries
included Mr. Emmanuel Nweke, Ogbuefi Tony
Nnaechetta, Mr Chinedu Francis Idigo, Dr.
Chike Obidigbo and Mr. Oseloka Obaze. With
the turn of event, the long list of aspirants in
APGA has been pruned to seven, including, Mr
Chukwuemeka Nwogbo, Mr Paul Odenigbo,
Lillian Ekwunife, Chief Willie Obiano, Mr John
Nwosu, Mr. John Emeka, and Nwachi
Obianwu.
The prospect of a fair contest of APGA
primaries in Anambra still remains elusive as
expected. The reason is based on allegations
that the badly factionalised party was working
in concert with the state governor, Mr Peter
Obi, to anoint an aspirant at the expense of
others, a possibility likely to create an
incendiary effect among party members.
The story is not different, if not worse with
PDP. Granted that the party would be holding
its state congress by August 24 to elect a
candidate for the election, the list of aspirants
has continued to lengthen by the day.
Aspirants so far cleared by the national
headquarters of the party include Chief Obinna
Uzoh, Mike Okoye, Akachukwu Nwankpo,
Ugochukwu Okeke, Josephine Anenih,
Emmanuel Anosike, Senator Andy Ubah, and
Honourable Jerry Ugokwe.
Others are: Nicholas Ukachukwu, Tony
Nwoye, Patrick Ogbomo, Kramer
Ifunanyachukwu, Alex Obiogbolu, Charles
Odunukwe, and Walter Okeke.
The PDP is not operating like one family
towards the election. The party is factionalised
with two factional chairmen, Chief Ejike
Oguebego recognised by the PDP National
Secretariat and Chief Emeakayi, who also
claimed to have the support of the national
secretariat struggling for the soul of PDP in
Anambra.
Notwithstanding the discordant tunes emanating
from the party’s ranks owing to the problem of
factionalisation, the aspirants are battling with
vague chances, while each of them is believed
to be contributing to the seemingly intractable
crisis in the party. The crisis in Anambra PDP is
even making the national headquarters to be
helpless. More that twice, the national chairman
of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, held meetings
with all governorship aspirants from Anambra.
The resolutions at the meetings were anchored
on necessity for a level playing field for all. The
aspirants called for transparency in the conduct
of the election with a request that PDP should
set its rules for the primaries straight. With the
agreements sealed notwithstanding, the coming
PDP primaries are not expected to hold with
maximum cooperation from all parties.
From indications, the APC which appears like a
starter in the Anambra scheduled governorship
election has its own pressures too. While APC
is still battling to gain a strong foot hold in the
state ahead of the election, the number of
aspirants seeking its ticket to contest in the
overall election has been on the increase.
Although seven contestants had been identified
so far, those in strong contention are the former
governor of the state, now a Senator, Dr Chris
Ngige, and Chief Godwin Ezeemo. Members in
APC believe that the contest may be limited to
the two given their experiences, grassroot
support and the wealth they command.
Ngige is said to depend on experience and the
structures he had laid since his days as the
governor of Anambra. He could not have been
a pushover, being a serving Senator
representing Anambra Central Senatorial zone,
while the popularity he has been commanding
in the state remains his source of strength. On
the other hand, Chief Ezeemo is reputably a
money bag known for philanthropy. That the
people of Anambra see him as one of the
highest employer of labour in the state makes
his case very instructive. He has been funding a
charity trust that has spanned over 10 years
with a lot of beneficiaries, including widows,
students, physically challenged and orphans.
APGA is still factionalised, while its inability to
address the case of litigation on the status of
each faction is a veritable problem that the party
will carry as a cross towards the election. It
remains to be seen whether the governor who is
a main pillar of support for APGA would be
able to deploy his power of incumbency as it
were, to aid the party to win the election in the
state.
From now till November, all eyes would be in
Anambra in anticipation that a free and fair
conduct of the election would up the great
expectations of Nigerians on the coming 2015
elections. In that case, Anambra faces a great
challenge creating avenues for Nigerians to see
it differently, this time around.

Politics / Inec Registers New Party (pdm) Linked To Atiku by Hblaise(m): 12:39am On Aug 19, 2013
Another party, Independent Democrat, has also
been registered.
After weeks of speculation, the Independent
National Electoral Commission on Friday
announced the registration of Peoples Democratic
Movement, a party largely believed to have links
with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The announcement came a day after Mr.
Abubakar admitted his ‘political associates’ were
behind the new party.
The electoral commission also registered another
party, the Independent Democrat, ID, raising the
total number of political parties to 25.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) has registered two new political parties in
accordance with the provisions of the 1999
Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
(as Amended) and the Electoral Act 2010 (as
Amended).
“The newly registered parties are the Independent
Democrats (ID) and the Peoples Democratic
Movement (PDM),” INEC said in a statement
signed by secretary to the commission, A. C.
Ogakwu.
The statement said the constitution, manifesto,
logo/flag and list of National Executive Officers
of each parties have also been approved by the
commission.
Arriving barely two weeks after three major
opposition parties merged into one, the PDM is
seen as a potential platform for Mr. Abubakar in
2015; and appears certain to rejig Nigeria’s fast-
paced political setting ahead of 2015 elections.
The former vice president, has officially denied
being a member of the new party, although his
associates have hinted at his interest in informal
interviews.
The PDM’s interim chairman, Bashir Yusuf, also
told PREMIUM TIMES the former vice president
remained a member of the PDP.
“No, Atiku is a member of PDP,” he said.
But what would seem the clearest of hints from
the former vice president regarding his links with
the new party came Thursday in a statement
released by his media team, insisting that Mr.
Abubakar remains a member of the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party, a party he helped found in
1998 from the early structures of PDM.
At the time, PDM was merely political group
pioneered by the late Shehu Yar’Adua, the elder
brother to late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
But Mr. Abubakar made it clear in the statement
that his “associates” were behind the new party,
and he had no “right or power to stop others from
associating or seeking registration for new
parties.”
“While acknowledging that many of his political
associates are involved in registering the PDM,
Atiku Abubakar explained that he had no powers
to stop adults with common interests from coming
together to form a party,” the statement said.
He however welcomed the proposed party-as it
was at the time, as “the expansion of the political
space to accommodate all shades of opinions or
political hue.”
Besides an apparent potential for the 2015
presidential election, allies of the vice president
speak of the emergence of the new party as a
guarded response to Mr. Abubakar’s increasing
alienation from the PDP.
Weeks back, Mr. Abubakar gave weight to that
concern with a protest to the leadership of the
PDP, about his treatment and the specific case of
his name missing from the delegate list for the
August 31 special convention of the PDP.
The letter, dated July 11 to the National Chairman
of the PDP, Bamanga Tukur, also complained
about the systematic withdrawal of the respects
and privileges accorded to him as a former vice
president, in line with the PDP Constitution and
sought the rectification of the mistake.
“As a bonafide member of our party, I look
forward to the respect and privileges conferred on
the Office of the Vice President and founding
fathers of the party by our party constitution,” the
former vice president wrote.
“I therefore request for a correction and
restoration of my right to attend the forthcoming
Special National Convention of our great party
and also membership of the Board of Trustees.”
If the former vice president leaves the PDP, it
would be the second time after he left in 2007 to
the defunct Action Congress.

Sports / What Do We Nigerians Benefit From Watching Foreign Club Matches? by Hblaise(m): 10:40pm On Aug 18, 2013
Football is a game that unites the whole world, Its also a means of making money for some people. I have tried to find out the reason behind Nigerians interest in foreign football especially the English and Spanish league but didn't come up with tangible reason. It really hurts me when i see young boys and men who are suppose to be at different places of work gather to pay and watch European leagues and thereby wastes their time and money. Fellow nairalander please help me stop this curiosity.
